Characterization of step-edge barrier crossing of para-sexiphenyl on the ZnO (101[combining macron]0) surface

Directed growth of quinacridone chains on the vicinal Ag(35 1 1) surface

The formation of self-assembled domains and chains of monomolecular width of quinacridone (QA) on the vicinal Ag(35 1 1) surface was investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy and low-energy electron diffraction. The focus was on the influence of the steps on the QA structures and their preferential azimuthal orientations with the aim of achieving a selective orientation. After deposition at a sample temperature of 300 K, QA forms the same kind of molecular chains as on the nominally flat Ag(100) surface because of strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds, which we reported in a previous publication [Humberg, N.; Bretel, R.; Eslam, A.; Le Moal, E.; Sokolowski, M. J. Phys. Chem. C 2020, 124, 24861-24873]. The vicinal surface leads to one additional chain orientation, which is parallel to the Ag step edges. However, most chains nucleate on the Ag terraces between steps with four distinct azimuthal orientations that are identical to those on Ag(100), and which are determined by the interactions with the (100) surface. At 300 K, the chains grow across the Ag steps, which do not break the azimuthal chain orientations. In contrast, during the deposition at sample temperatures of 400 and 500 K, the nucleation of the chains takes place at the Ag step edges. Hence, these have a strong influence on the azimuthal orientation of the molecules, resulting in a preferential growth of the chains in two of the four azimuthal orientations. We explain this by the adaptation of favorable adsorption sites, which involve the replacement of Ag atoms by QA molecules with specific azimuthal orientations at the step edges.

Molecular Design of Sexiphenyl-Based Liquid Crystals: Towards Temperature-Stable, Nematic Phases with Enhanced Optical Properties

This research introduces a novel liquid crystal molecular design approach based on the para-sexiphenyl (6P) structure. Six new liquid crystalline materials were synthesized, incorporating an alkyl terminal and lateral substitutions of the sexiphenyl core to achieve temperature-stable and broad nematic phases. The synthetic pathway involved cross-coupling, resulting in derivatives with strong nematogenic characteristics. Optical investigations demonstrated that the tested material had high birefringence values, making it promising for optical and electronic applications. These results open up new avenues of research and offer potential practical applications in electronics, photonics, optoelectronics and beyond.

Quantifying entropic barriers in single-molecule surface diffusion

The quantitative role of entropy in the surface diffusion of molecules with many degrees of freedom is still not well understood. Here, we quantify entropic diffusion barriers as well as attempt frequencies by performing a systematic decomposition of the Arrhenius equation for single oligophenyl molecules of various lengths (two to six phenyl rings and benzene as the reference) on an amorphous silica surface using extensive molecular dynamics simulations. Attempt frequencies evaluated from velocity auto-correlation functions are found close to k_BT/h, the frequency factor of transition state theory. Importantly, we find large positive entropy contributions to the free energy barrier of diffusion up to 55%, increasing with molecular length with 4.1 kJ/mol/phenyl ring. The entropic barrier is about 40%-60% of the entropy of the molecule surface adsorption free energy, revealing that at the transition states, the molecules can liberate a major part of their conformational states, increasing with length. The substantial role of the internal degrees of freedom for the diffusive dynamics is explicitly demonstrated by studying internally constrained, "rigid" version of the molecules. Finally, we discuss also rotational diffusion and the role of surface vibrations. Our results affirm that it is essential for quantitative studies and interpretation of surface diffusion of complex molecules to consider internal entropic effects.
