Review of the Interfacial Structure and Properties of Surfactants in Petroleum Production and Geological Storage Systems from a Molecular Scale Perspective

Surfactants play a crucial role in tertiary oil recovery by reducing the interfacial tension between immiscible phases, altering surface wettability, and improving foam film stability. Oil reservoirs have high temperatures and high pressures, making it difficult and hazardous to conduct lab experiments. In this context, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is a valuable tool for complementing experiments. It can effectively study the microscopic behaviors (such as diffusion, adsorption, and aggregation) of the surfactant molecules in the pore fluids and predict the thermodynamics and kinetics of these systems with a high degree of accuracy. MD simulation also overcomes the limitations of traditional experiments, which often lack the necessary temporal-spatial resolution. Comparing simulated results with experimental data can provide a comprehensive explanation from a microscopic standpoint. This article reviews the state-of-the-art MD simulations of surfactant adsorption and resulting interfacial properties at gas/oil-water interfaces. Initially, the article discusses interfacial properties and methods for evaluating surfactant-formed monolayers, considering variations in interfacial concentration, molecular structure of the surfactants, and synergistic effect of surfactant mixtures. Then, it covers methods for characterizing microstructure at various interfaces and the evolution process of the monolayers' packing state as a function of interfacial concentration and the surfactants' molecular structure. Next, it examines the interactions between surfactants and the aqueous phase, focusing on headgroup solvation and counterion condensation. Finally, it analyzes the influence of hydrophobic phase molecular composition on interactions between surfactants and the hydrophobic phase. This review deepened our understanding of the micro-level mechanisms of oil displacement by surfactants and is beneficial for screening and designing surfactants for oil field applications.

Effect of counterions on the structure and dynamics of water near a negatively charged surfactant: a theoretical vibrational sum frequency generation study

Charged aqueous interfaces are of paramount importance in electrochemical, biological and environmental sciences. The properties of aqueous interfaces with ionic surfactants can be influenced by the presence of counterions. Earlier experiments involving vibrational sum frequency generation (VSFG) spectroscopy of aqueous interfaces with negatively charged sodium dodecyl sulfate (Na+DS- or SDS) surfactants revealed that the hydrogen bonding strength of the interfacial water molecules follows a certain order when salts of monovalent and divalent cations are added. It is known that cations do not directly participate in hydrogen bonding with water molecules, rather they only influence the hydrogen bonded network through their electrostatic fields. In the current work, we have simulated the aqueous interfacial systems of sodium dodecyl sulfate in the presence of chloride salts of mono and divalent countercations. The electronic polarization effects on the ions are considered at a mean-field level within the electronic continuum correction model. Our calculations of the VSFG spectra show a blue shift in the presence of added countercations whose origin is traced to different relative contributions of water molecules from the solvation shells of the surfactant headgroups and the remaining water molecules in the presence of countercations. Furthermore, the cations shield the electric fields of the surfactant headgroups, which in turn influences the contributions of water molecules to the total VSFG spectrum. This shielding effect becomes more significant when divalent countercations are present. The dynamics of water molecules is found to be slower at the interface in comparison to the bulk. The interfacial depth dependence of various dynamical quantities shows that the interface is structurally and dynamically more heterogeneous at the microscopic level.

Flotation surface chemistry of water-soluble salt minerals: from experimental results to new perspectives

The flotation separation of water-soluble salt minerals has to be conducted under the condition of saturation in brines which represents a challenging but exciting topic of colloid and surface chemistry. Despite several proposals on explaining the success of this industrial application for many decades, our understanding of the flotation separation is still far from complete yet, owing to the complexity of the highly selective collection of salt crystals by air bubbles in brines. Here, we thoroughly review the experimental results for halogen, oxyanion, and double salts and match them with the proposed theories on the flotation of soluble salts to identify the agreed and disagreed cases. The experimental results show that the flotation of these salts varies from collectors (surfactants applied to control the crystal hydrophobicity) to collectors and is strongly affected by the brine ion composition and pH conditions. We find some exceptional flotation results that cannot be simply explained by the crystal surface charge and wettability. Furthermore, we outline several disputes and discrepancies between the experiments and the theories when different collectors are applied. Apart from the extensive consideration of surface hydration, the presence of external ion species exhibits ubiquitous effects on the surface properties of salt crystals and the colloidal properties of collectors. We conclude that the interactions between salt ions, water molecules, collectors, and salt crystals must be considered more thoroughly, and the activity of collectors at the air-liquid interface should also be the focus. Advanced techniques such as molecular dynamics simulation, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and sum-frequency generation spectroscopy are expected to be promising research tools for future studies.

Redefining the concept of hydration water near soft interfaces

Water determines the properties of biological systems. Therefore, understanding the nature of the mutual interaction between water and biosystems is of primary importance for a proper assessment of any biological activity, e.g., the efficacy of new drugs or vaccines. A convenient way to characterize the interactions between biosystems and water is to analyze their impact on water density and dynamics in the proximity of the interfaces. It is commonly accepted that water bulk density and dynamical properties are recovered at distances of the order of 1 nm away from the surface of biological systems. This notion leads to the definition of hydration or biological water as the nanoscopic layer of water covering the surface of biosystems and to the expectation that all the effects of the water-interface interaction are limited to this thin region. Here, we review some of our latest contributions, showing that phospholipid membranes affect the water dynamics, structural properties, and hydrogen bond network at a distance that is more than twice as large as the commonly evoked ∼1nm thick layer and of the order of 2.4 nm. Furthermore, we unveil that at a shorter distance ∼0.5nm from the membrane, instead, there is an additional interface between lipid-bound and unbound water. Bound water has a structural role in the stability of the membrane. Our results imply that the concept of hydration water should be revised or extended and pave the way to a deeper understanding of the mutual interactions between water and biological systems.

From Surface Tension to Molecular Distribution: Modeling Surfactant Adsorption at the Air-Water Interface

Surfactants are centrally important in many scientific and engineering fields and are used for many purposes such as foaming agents and detergents. However, many challenges remain in providing a comprehensive understanding of their behavior. Here, we provide a brief historical overview of the study of surfactant adsorption at the air-water interface, followed by a discussion of some recent advances in this area from our group. The main focus is on incorporating an accurate description of the adsorption layer thickness of surfactant at the air-water interface. Surfactants have a wide distribution at the air-water interface, which can have a significant effect on important properties such as the surface excess, surface tension, and surface potential. We have developed a modified Poisson-Boltzmann (MPB) model to describe this effect, which we outline here. We also address the remaining challenges and future research directions in this area. We believe that experimental techniques, modeling, and simulation should be combined to form a holistic picture of surfactant adsorption at the air-water interface.

Quantifying the Counterion-Specific Effect on Surfactant Adsorption Using Modeling, Simulation, and Experiments

Ionic surfactants behave differently in the presence of various counterions, which plays an important role in many scientific and engineering processes. Previous work has shown that the counterion-specific surface tension can be reproduced with classical adsorption models, but the underlying origin of this effect has not been explained. In this paper, we extend our previously developed adsorption model to account for the specific counterion adsorption. This model can accurately predict the surface tension of surfactant solutions like sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in the presence of the monovalent salts LiCl, NaCl, KCl, and CsCl. The predicted surface excess and surface potential are validated by corresponding sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy experiments. We also used molecular dynamic (MD) simulation to explain the origin of the counterion-specific effect for surfactant behavior. Our study shows that for SDS, binding of the counterion to both the headgroup and a few CH₂ fragments close to the surfactant head contributes to the counterion-specific effect. In general, SDS behaves like a large ion, and it prefers to bind with large counterions such as Cs⁺, which is consistent with Collins's law of matching water affinity. Therefore, large counterions enhance the surface adsorption and lower the surface tension the most.

Structure and Dynamics of Nanoconfined Water Between Surfactant Monolayers

The properties of nanoconfined water arise in direct response to the properties of the interfaces that confine it. A great deal of research has focused on understanding how and why the physical properties of confined water differ greatly from the bulk. In this work, we have used all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to provide a detailed description of the structural and dynamical properties of nanoconfined water between two monolayers consisting of an archetypal ionic surfactant, cetrimonium bromide (CTAB, [CH₃(CH₂)₁₅N(CH₃)₃]⁺Br^-). Small differences in the area per surfactant of the monolayers impart a clear effect on the intrinsic density, mobility, and ordering of the interfacial water layer confined by the monolayers. We find that as the area per surfactant within a monolayer decreases, the mobility of the interfacial water molecules decreases in response. As the monolayer packing density decreases, we find that each individual CTAB molecule has a greater effect on the ordering of water molecules in its first hydration shell. In a denser monolayer, we observe that the effect of individual CTAB molecules on the ordering of water molecules is hindered by increased competition between headgroups. Therefore, when two monolayers with different areas per surfactant are used to confine a nanoscale water layer, we observe the emergence of noncentrosymmetry.

Adsorption of ionic surfactants at the air-water interface: The gap between theory and experiment

We review the experimental and theoretical results for the adsorption and structure of ionic surfactants at the air-liquid interface. The results show that ionic surfactants form thick adsorption layers at the interfacial region. We also review several adsorption models for ionic surfactants, which become increasingly complex as they capture the many features of adsorption layers. However, the adsorption layer structures determined by experiments and the structures predicted by models do not match because most models assume very thin adsorption layers. We show the discrepancies between measured and predicted surface properties and provide several explanations. We conclude that the mismatch in the adsorption layer structure provided by experiments and the structure provided by adsorption models is the main reason for the discrepancies in the surface excess and the surface potential.

Molecular dynamics modeling of Pseudomonas aeruginosa outer membranes

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a common Gram-negative bacterium and opportunistic human pathogen. The distinctive structure of its outer membrane (OM) and outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) plays a fundamental role in bacterial virulence, colonization ability, and antibiotic resistance. To provide critical insights into OM and OMV functionality, we conducted an all-atom molecular dynamics study of asymmetric membranes that are biologically relevant to P. aeruginosa. We hybridized a GLYCAM06-based lipopolysaccharides force field with the Stockholm lipids force field (Slipids) to model bilayer membranes with Lipid A molecules in one leaflet and physiologically relevant phospholipid molecules in the other, including 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (DPPE), 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (DOPE), 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoglycerol (DPPG), and 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoglycerol (DOPG). In particular, a membrane with phospholipid composition representing the P. aeruginosa OM was constructed and modeled by mixing the physiologically dominant components. The detailed structure of membranes was characterized by area per lipid, transmembrane mass and charge densities, radial distribution function (RDF), deuterium order parameter (SCD) of acyl chains, and inclination angles of phosphates and disaccharide in Lipid A. The membrane fluidity in equilibrium and the hydration of functional groups were probed and characterized quantitatively. The consistent properties of the Lipid A leaflets in different membranes demonstrate its compatibility with various phospholipids present in the P. aeruginosa OM. The more ordered acyl chains of Lipid A compared to the cytoplasmic cell membrane contribute to the low permeability of bacterial outer membrane. The findings of this computational investigation of P. aeruginosa OM will further the understanding of microbial pathogenesis and enable future study of OMV biogenesis.

Glycerol Solvates DPPC Headgroups and Localizes in the Interfacial Regions of Model Pulmonary Interfaces Altering Bilayer Structure

The inclusion of glycerol in formulations for pulmonary drug delivery may affect the bioavailability of inhaled steroids by retarding their transport across the lung epithelium. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the molecular interactions of glycerol with model pulmonary interfaces provide a biophysical basis for glycerol modifying inhaled drug transport. Dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) monolayers and liposomes were used as model pulmonary interfaces, in order to examine the effects of bulk glycerol (0-30% w/w) on their structures and dynamics using complementary biophysical measurements and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Glycerol was found to preferentially interact with the carbonyl groups in the interfacial region of DPPC and with phosphate and choline in the headgroup, thus causing an increase in the size of the headgroup solvation shell, as evidenced by an expansion of DPPC monolayers (molecular area increased from 52 to 68 Ų) and bilayers seen in both Langmuir isotherms and MD simulations. Both small angle neutron scattering and MD simulations indicated a reduction in gel phase DPPC bilayer thickness by ∼3 Å in 30% w/w glycerol, a phenomenon consistent with the observation from FTIR data, that glycerol caused the lipid headgroup to remain oriented parallel to the membrane plane in contrast to its more perpendicular conformation adopted in pure water. Furthermore, FTIR measurements suggested that the terminal methyl groups of the DPPC acyl chains were constrained in the presence of glycerol. This observation is supported by MD simulations, which predict bridging between adjacent DPPC headgroups by glycerol as a possible source of its putative membrane stiffening effect. Collectively, these data indicate that glycerol preferentially solvates DPPC headgroups and localizes in specific areas of the interfacial region, resulting in structural changes to DPPC bilayers which may influence cell permeability to drugs.

Surfactant Assemblies on Selected Nanostructured Surfaces: Evidence, Driving Forces, and Applications

Surfactant adsorption at solid-liquid interfaces is critical for a number of applications of vast industrial interest and can also be used to seed surface-modification processes. Many of the surfaces of interest are nanostructured, as they might present surface roughness at the molecular scale, chemical heterogeneity, as well as a combination of both surface roughness and chemical heterogeneity. These effects provide lateral confinement on the surfactant aggregates. It is of interest to quantify how much surfactant adsorbs on such nanostructured surfaces and how the surfactant aggregates vary as the degree of lateral confinement changes. This review focuses on experimental evidence on selected substrates, including gold- and carbon-based substrates, suggesting that lateral confinement can have pronounced effects both on the amount adsorbed and on the morphology of the aggregates as well as on a systematic study, via diverse simulation approaches, on the effect of lateral confinement on the structure of the surfactant aggregates. Atomistic and coarse-grained simulations conducted for surfactants on graphene sheets and carbon nanotubes are reviewed, as well as coarse-grained simulations for surfactant adsorption on nanostructured surfaces. Finally, we suggest a few possible extensions of these studies that could positively impact a few practical applications. In particular, the simultaneous effect of lateral confinement and of the coadsorption of molecular compounds within the surface aggregates is expected to yield interesting fundamental results with long-lasting consequences in applications ranging from drug delivery to the design of advanced materials.

A novel method for constructing continuous intrinsic surfaces of nanoparticles

In recent years, the field of nanotechnology has become increasingly prevalent in the disciplines of science and engineering due to it’s abundance of application areas. Therefore, the ability to study and characterize these materials is more relevant than ever. Despite the wealth of simulation and modeling studies of nanoparticles reported in the literature, a rigorous description of the interface of such materials is rarely included in analyses which are pivotal to understanding interfacial behavior. We propose a novel method for constructing the continuous intrinsic surface of nanoparticles, which has been applied to a model system consisting of a sodium dodecyl sulfate micelle in the presence of testosterone propionate. We demonstrate the advantages of using our continuous intrinsic surface definition as a means to elucidate the true interfacial structure of the micelle, the interfacial properties of the hydrating water molecules, and the position of the drug (testosterone propionate) within the micelle. Additionally, we discuss the implications of this algorithm for future work in the simulation of nanoparticles. Graphical Abstract
