Abstract
In recent years, 3-hydroxychromone (3-HC) and its derivatives have attracted much interest for their applications as molecular photoswitches and fluorescent probes. A clear understanding of their excited-state dynamics is essential for their applications and further development of new functional 3-HC derivatives. However, the deactivation mechanism of the photoexcited 3-HC family is still puzzling as their spectral properties are sensitive to the surrounding medium and substituents. The excited-state relaxation channels of 3-HC have been a matter of intense debate. In the current work, we thoroughly investigated the excited-state decay process of the 3-HC system in the gas phase using high-level electronic structure calculations and on-the-fly excited-state dynamic simulations intending to provide insight into the intrinsic photochemical properties of the 3-HC system. A new deactivation mechanism is proposed in the gas phase, which is different from that in solvents. The excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process that occurs in solutions is not preferred in the gas phase due to the existence of a sizable energy barrier (∼0.8 eV), and thus, no dual fluorescence is found. On the contrary, the non-radiative decay process is the dominant decay channel, which is driven by photoisomerization combined with ring-puckering and ring-opening processes. The results coincide with the observations of an experiment performed in a supersonic jet by Itoh (M. Itoh, Pure Appl. Chem., 1993, 65(8), 1629-1634). The current work indicates that the solution environment plays an important role in regulating the excited-state dynamic behaviour of the 3-HC system. This study thus provides theoretical guidance for the rational design and improvement of the photochemical properties of the 3-HC system and paves the way for further investigation into its photochemical properties in complex environments.

Abstract
Excited State Intramolecular Proton Transfer in pyrrol pyridine is theoretically investigated using non-adiabatic dynamics simulations. The photochemical process is completely characterised: the reaction time, the total yield and the accessibility of the conical intersection are evaluated. Finally, new mechanistic interpretation are extracted: the proton transfer reaction in this molecule is shown to be driven by two complementary mechanisms.

Abstract
Salicylimines are versatile compounds in which an excited-state intramolecular proton transfer and torsional motions may set in upon photoexcitation. Here, we study N-(α-phenylethyl)salicylimine (PESA) to elucidate how the photochemical reaction pathways depend on the excitation wavelength and to what extent the relative photoproduct distribution can be steered towards a desired species. DFT structure and potential energy calculations disclose that the most stable ground-state conformer is an enol species and that the photodynamics may proceed differently depending on the excited state that is reached. With matrix isolation infrared spectroscopy, the predominance of the enol conformer of PESA is confirmed. Illumination of the cryogenic sample with different wavelengths shifts the ratio of enol and keto products, and by sequential irradiation a selective re- and depopulation is possible. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy further reveals that also at room temperature, the outcome of the photoreaction depends on excitation wavelength, and in combination with the calculations, it can be rationalized that the decisive step occurs within the first hundred femtoseconds. Since the ultrafast dynamics mostly match those of similar salicylimines, our findings might also apply to those systems and provide additional insight into their reported sensitivity on excitation energy.

Abstract
We employ the ab initio molecular dynamics within the surface hopping method to explore the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer taking place on the coupled "bright" S1 (ππ*) and "dark" S2 (nπ*) states of 3-hydroxychromone. The nonadiabatic population transfer between these states via an accessible conical intersection would open up multiple proton transfer pathways. Our findings reveal the keto tautomer formation via S1 on a timescale similar to the O-H in-plane vibrational period (<100 fs). Structural analysis indicates that a few parameters of the five-membered proton transfer geometry that constitute the donor (hydroxyl) and acceptor (carbonyl) groups would be adequate to drive the enol to keto transformation. We also investigate the role of O-H in-plane and out-of-plane vibrational motions in the excited-state dynamics of 3-hydroxychromone.

Abstract
The excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) phenomenon is nowadays widely acknowledged to play a crucial role in many photobiological and photochemical processes. It is an extremely fast transformation, often taking place at sub-100 fs timescales. While its experimental characterization can be highly challenging, a rich manifold of theoretical approaches at different levels is nowadays available to support and guide experimental investigations. In this perspective, we summarize the state-of-the-art quantum-chemical methods, as well as molecular- and quantum-dynamics tools successfully applied in ESIPT process studies, focusing on a critical comparison of their specific properties.

Abstract
In this short review, we attempt to unfold various aspects of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) from the studies that are available up to date. Since Weller’s discovery of ESIPT in salicylic acid (SA) and its derivative methyl salicylate (MS), numerous studies have emerged on the topic and it has become an attractive field of research because of its manifold applications. Here, we discuss some critical aspects of ESIPT and tautomerization from the mechanistic viewpoint. We address excitation wavelength dependence, anti-Kasha ESIPT, fast and slow ESIPT, reversibility and irreversibility of ESIPT, hydrogen bonding and geometrical factors, excited-state double proton transfer (ESDPT), concerted and stepwise ESDPT.

Abstract
Nonradiative decay pathways associated with vibronically coupled S1 (ππ*)-S2 (nπ*) potential energy surfaces of 3- and 5-hydroxychromones are investigated by employing the linear vibronic coupling approach. The presence of a conical intersection close to the Franck-Condon point is identified based on the critical examination of computed energetics and structural parameters of stationary points. We show that very minimal displacements of relevant atoms of intramolecular proton transfer geometry are adequate to drive the molecule toward the conical intersection nuclear configuration. The evolving wavepacket on S1 (ππ*) bifurcates at the conical intersection: a part of the wavepacket moves to S2 (nπ*) within a few femtoseconds while the other decays to S1 minimum. Our findings indicate the possibility of forming the proton transfer tautomer product via S2 (nπ*), competing with the traditional pathway occurring on S1 (ππ*).

Abstract
A theoretical study is used to explore the involvement of O-H vibrational motions in the S0 → S2 photoinduced dynamics of 3-hydroxypyran-4-one (3-HOX). Two transitions, S0 → S1 and S0 → S2, are attributed to the experimentally observed electronic absorption spectral features in the range of 3.5-5.5 eV. We compute model potential energy surfaces of vibronically coupled S1 (nπ*) and S2 (ππ*) states with the aid of extensive electronic structure calculations. The S1-S2 conical intersection is characterized in the O-H bend and O-H stretch vibrational coordinate space. Quantum wavepacket dynamics simulations reveal an ultrafast S2 → S1 internal conversion decay, where about 90% of the S2 population disappears within the first 50 fs of the propagation time. The participation of O-H vibrational motions in the early events of nonadiabatic dynamics is analyzed based on the time evolution of nuclear densities on S2. We discuss the implications of these observations to provide fundamental insights into the nonadiabatic excited-state intramolecular proton transfer in 3-HOX and its derivatives.

Abstract
With the aim of offering new computational tools helping in the description of photochemical reactions and phenomena occurring at the excited state, we present in this work the capability of a density based index (Π) in locating decay channels from higher to lower excited states. The Π index, previously applied to disclose non-radiative decay channels from the first excited state to the ground state, is very simple in its formulation and can be evaluated, practically with no extra computational cost, and coupled to any quantum method able to provide excited states densities. Indeed, this index relies only on the knowledge of energetics and electron densities of the different electronic states involved in the decay. In the present work, we show the proficiency of the Π index in the general case of decay between excited states by applying it to two model systems well characterized both theoretically and experimentally. In both cases, this descriptor was successful in spotting the regions where excited states are more likely to decay, thus suggesting its potential interest for further application in the design of new compounds. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
The primal definition of first-order non-adiabatic couplings among electronic states relies on the knowledge of how electronic wavefunctions vary with nuclear coordinates. However, the non-adiabatic coupling between two electronic states can be obtained in the vicinity of a conical intersection from energies only, as this vector spans the branching plane along which degeneracy is lifted to first order. The gradient difference and derivative coupling are responsible of the two-dimensional cusp of a conical intersection between both potential-energy surfaces and can be identified to the non-trivial eigenvectors of the second derivative of the square energy difference, as first pointed out in Köppel and Schubert [Mol. Phys. 104(5-7), 1069 (2006)]. Such quantities can always be computed in principle for the cost of two numerical Hessians in the worst-case scenario. Analytic-derivative techniques may help in terms of accuracy and efficiency but also raise potential traps due to singularities and ill-defined derivatives at degeneracies. We compare here two approaches, one fully numerical, the other semianalytic, where analytic gradients are available but Hessians are not, and investigate their respective conditions of applicability. Benzene and 3-hydroxychromone are used as illustrative application cases. It is shown that non-adiabatic couplings can thus be estimated with decent accuracy in regions of significant size around conical intersections. This procedure is robust and could be useful in the context of on-the-fly non-adiabatic dynamics or be used for producing model representations of intersecting potential energy surfaces with complete obviation of the electronic wavefunctions.
