Ultrafast energy and electron transfers in structurally well addressable BODIPY-porphyrin-fullerene polyads

Cascades of energy and electron transfer in a panchromatic absorber

The investigation of molecular model systems is fundamental towards a deeper understanding of key photochemical steps in natural photosynthesis. Herein, we report an entirely non-covalent triad consisting of boron dipyrromethene (BDP), porphyrin (ZnP), and fullerene (C60). Non-covalent binding motifs such as an amidinium-carboxylate salt bridge as well as axial pyridyl-metal coordination offer substantial electronic coupling and establish efficient pathways for photoactivated energy and electron transfer processes along a well-tuned gradient. Experimental findings from steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic assays, as well as (spectro-)electrochemical measurements corroborate the formation of BDP|ZnP|C60 in solution, on one hand, and significant communication in the excited states, on the other hand. BDP acts as an energy harvesting antenna towards ZnP, which eventually undergoes charge separation with C60 by electron transfer from ZnP to C60. Notably, full spectral deconvolution of the transient species was achieved, supporting the successful self-assembly as well as giving a clear view onto the occurring photophysical processes and their spectral footprints upon photoexcitation.

Photophysical Properties of BODIPY Derivatives for the Implementation of Organic Solar Cells: A Computational Approach

Solar cells based on organic compounds are a proven emergent alternative to conventional electrical energy generation. Here, we provide a computational study of power conversion efficiency optimization of boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) derivatives by means of their associated open-circuit voltage, short-circuit density, and fill factor. In doing so, we compute for the derivatives' geometrical structures, energy levels of frontier molecular orbitals, absorption spectra, light collection efficiencies, and exciton binding energies via density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TD)-DFT calculations. We fully characterize four D-π-A (BODIPY) molecular systems of high efficiency and improved J _sc that are well suited for integration into bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells as electron-donor materials in the active layer. Our results are twofold: we found that molecular complexes with a structural isoxazoline ring exhibit a higher power conversion efficiency (PCE), a useful result for improving the BHJ current, and, on the other hand, by considering the molecular systems as electron-acceptor materials, with P3HT as the electron donor in the active layer, we found a high PCE compound favorability with a pyrrolidine ring in its structure, in contrast to the molecular systems built with an isoxazoline ring. The theoretical characterization of the electronic properties of the BODIPY derivatives provided here, computed with a combination of ab initio methods and quantum models, can be readily applied to other sets of molecular complexes to hierarchize optimal power conversion efficiency.

Synthesis and photophysical properties of 1,7-aroyl BODIPYs: an experimental and theoretical study

The introduction of electron donating groups or electron withdrawing groups into the phenyl ring at the meso position of 1,7-aroyl BODIPY significantly influences the fluorescence quantum yield.

Divergent Synthesis of Molecular Winch Prototypes

We report the synthesis of conceptually new prototypes of molecular winches with the ultimate aim to investigate the work performed by a single ruthenium-based molecular motor anchored on a surface by probing its ability to pull a load upon electrically-driven directional rotation. According to a technomimetic design, the motor was embedded in a winch structure, with a long flexible polyethylene glycol chain terminated by an azide hook to connect a variety of molecular loads. The structure of the motor was first derivatized by means of two sequential cross-coupling reactions involving a penta(4-halogenophenyl)cyclopentadienyl hydrotris(indazolyl)borate ruthenium(II) precursor and the resulting benzylamine derivative was next exploited as key intermediate in the divergent synthesis of a family of nanowinch prototypes. A one-pot method involving sequential peptide coupling and Cu-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition was developed to yield four loaded nanowinches, with load fragments encompassing triptycene, fullerene and porphyrin moieties.

Porphyrin-Containing MOFs and COFs as Heterogeneous Photosensitizers for Singlet Oxygen-Based Antimicrobial Nanodevices

Visible-light irradiation of porphyrin and metalloporphyrin dyes in the presence of molecular oxygen can result in the photocatalytic generation of singlet oxygen (¹O₂). This type II reactive oxygen species (ROS) finds many applications where the dye, also called the photosensitizer, is dissolved (i.e., homogeneous phase) along with the substrate to be oxidized. In contrast, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are insoluble (or will disassemble) when placed in a solvent. When stable as a suspension, MOFs adsorb a large amount of O₂ and photocatalytically generate ¹O₂ in a heterogeneous process efficiently. Considering the immense surface area and great capacity for gas adsorption of MOFs, they seem ideal candidates for this application. Very recently, covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), variants where reticulation relies on covalent rather than coordination bonds, have emerged as efficient photosensitizers. This comprehensive mini review describes recent developments in the use of porphyrin-based or porphyrin-containing MOFs and COFs, including nanosized versions, as heterogeneous photosensitizers of singlet oxygen toward antimicrobial applications.

Porphyrin-based MOFs as heterogeneous photocatalysts for the eradication of organic pollutants and toxins

Water and air pollution are among the major environmental challenges of this era. Waste management, economic sustainable development and renewable energy are unavoidable concomitant considerations. Over the past five years, nanosized metal-organic frameworks (nano-MOFs) have been developed for the elimination of pollutants in wet media and air-born toxins using the highly efficient reactive oxygen species (ROS) of type I (H2O2, •OH, O[Formula: see text] and of type II (1O[Formula: see text]. The ROS are catalytically and efficiently generated through photosensitization, and porphyrins and metalloporphyrins are pigments of choice for this purpose. This short review summarizes the fundamentals of ROS generation by porphyrin-based nano-MOFs (mainly through the formation of ROS type II) and their composites (leading to ROS type I), which includes energy and electron transfer processes, and their applications in these environmental issues.

Fully Conjugated Pyrene-BODIPY and Pyrene-BODIPY-Ferrocene Dyads and Triads: Synthesis, Characterization, and Selective Noncovalent Interactions with Nanocarbon Materials

Several pyrene-boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) and pyrene-BODIPY-ferrocene derivatives with a fully conjugated pyrene fragment appended to the α-position(s) of the BODIPY core have been prepared by Knoevenagel condensation reaction and characterized by one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), UV-vis, fluorescence spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry as well as X-ray crystallography. The redox properties of new donor-acceptor BODIPY dyads and triads were studied by electrochemical (cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV)) and spectroelectrochemical approaches. Formation of weakly bonded noncovalent complexes between the new pyrene-BODIPYs and nanocarbon materials (C₆₀, C₇₀, single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT), and graphene) was studied by UV-vis, steady-state fluorescent, and time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy. UV-vis and fluorescent spectroscopy are indicative of the much stronger and selective interaction between new dyes and (6,5)-SWCNT as well as graphene compared to that of C₆₀ and C₇₀ fullerenes. In agreement with these data, transient absorption spectroscopy provided no evidence for any significant change in excited-state lifetime or photoinduced charge transfer between pyrene-BODIPYs and C₆₀ or C₇₀ fullerenes when the pyrene-BODIPY chromophores were excited into the lowest-energy singlet excited state. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations suggest that the pyrene fragments are fully conjugated into the π-system of BODIPY core, which correlates well with the experimental data.

Enhanced Organic and Perovskite Solar Cell Performance through Modification of the Electron-Selective Contact with a Bodipy-Porphyrin Dyad

Photovoltaic devices based on organic semiconductors and organo-metal halide perovskites have not yet reached the theoretically predicted power conversion efficiencies while they still exhibit poor environmental stability. Interfacial engineering using suitable materials has been recognized as an attractive approach to tackle the above issues. We introduce here a zinc porphyrin-triazine-bodipy donor-π bridge-acceptor dye as a universal electron transfer mediator in both organic and perovskite solar cells. Thanks to its "push-pull" character, this dye enhances electron transfer from the absorber layer toward the electron-selective contact, thus improving the device's photocurrent and efficiency. The direct result is more than 10% average power conversion efficiency enhancement in both fullerene-based (from 8.65 to 9.80%) and non-fullerene-based (from 7.71 to 8.73%) organic solar cells as well as in perovskite ones (from 14.56 to 15.67%), proving the universality of our approach. Concurrently, by forming a hydrophobic network on the surface of metal oxide substrates, it improves the nanomorphology of the photoactive overlayer and contributes to efficiency stabilization. The fabricated devices of both kinds preserved more than 85% of their efficiency upon exposure to ambient conditions for more than 600 h without any encapsulation.

A 9.16% Power Conversion Efficiency Organic Solar Cell with a Porphyrin Conjugated Polymer Using a Nonfullerene Acceptor

A new low-molecular-weight porphyrin-based polymer, PPPyDPP, with pyridine-capped diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) has been synthesized, and its optical and electrochemical properties were investigated. The polymer is prepared with a low content of homocoupling units and gives a widely spread absorption from 400 to 900 nm with a narrow optical band gap of 1.46 eV. The highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels are respectively located at -5.27 and -3.78 eV, respectively. PPPyDPP was used as the electron donor, whereas [6,6]-phenyl-C₇₁-butyric acid methyl ester (PC₇₁BM) and bis(rhodanine)indolo-[3,2-b]-carbazole (ICzRd₂), a nonfullerene small molecule, were used as acceptors for the fabrication of solution-processed bulk heterojunction polymer solar cells. Overall power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 7.31 and 9.16% (record high for porphyrin-containing polymers) were obtained for PC₇₁BM and ICzRd₂, respectively. A high V_oc of 1.01 V and a low E_loss of 0.45 eV may explain this new record.

Energy/Electron Transfer Switch for Controlling Optical Properties of Silicon Quantum Dots

The superior optical properties of Silicon Quantum Dots (SQDs) have made them of increasing interest for a variety of biological and opto-electronic applications. The surface functionalization of the SQDs with aromatic ligands plays a key role in controlling their optical properties due to the interaction of the ligands with the electronic wave function of SQDs. However, there is limited reports in literature describing the impact of spacer groups connecting the aromatic chromophore to SQDs on the optical properties of the SQDs. Herein, we report the synthesis of two SQDs assemblies (1.6 nm average diameter) functionalized with perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid diimide (PDI) chromophore through N-propylurea and propylamine spacers. Depending on the nature of the spacer, the photophysical measurements provide clear evidence for efficient energy and/or electron transfer between the SQDs and PDI. Energy transfer was confirmed to be the operative process when propylurea spacer was used, in which the rate was estimated to be ~2 × 109 s-1. On the other hand, the propylamine spacer was found to facilitate electron transfer process within the SQDs assembly. To illustrate functionality, the water soluble SQD-N-propylurea-PDI assembly was proven to be nontoxic and efficient for fluorescent imaging of embryonic kidney HEK293 cells and human bone cancerous U2OS cells.

Is π-Stacking Prone To Accelerate Singlet-Singlet Energy Transfers?

π-Stacking is the most common structural feature that dictates the optical and electronic properties of chromophores in the solid state. Herein, a unidirectional singlet-singlet energy-transfer dyad has been designed to test the effect of π-stacking of zinc(II) porphyrin, [Zn₂], as a slipped dimer acceptor using a BODIPY unit, [bod], as the donor, bridged by the linker C₆H₄C≡CC₆H₄. The rate of singlet energy transfer, k_ET(S₁), at 298 K ( k_ET(S₁) = 4.5 × 10¹⁰ s^-1) extracted through the change in fluorescence lifetime, τ_F, of [bod] in the presence (27.1 ps) and the absence of [Zn₂] (4.61 ns) from Streak camera measurements, and the rise time of the acceptor signal in femtosecond transient absorption spectra (22.0 ps), is faster than most literature cases where no π-stacking effect exists (i.e., monoporphyrin units). At 77 K, the τ_F of [bod] increases to 45.3 ps, indicating that k_ET(S₁) decreases by 2-fold (2.2 × 10¹⁰ s^-1), a value similar to most values reported in the literature, thus suggesting that the higher value at 298 K is thermally promoted at a higher temperature.

Azophenine as Central Core for Efficient Light Harvesting Devices

The notoriously non-luminescent uncycled azophenine (Q) was harnessed with Bodipy and zinc(II)porphyrin antennas to probe its fluorescence properties, its ability to act as a singlet excited state energy acceptor and to mediate the transfer. Two near-IR emissions are depicted from time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy, which are most likely due to the presence of tautomers of very similar calculated total energies (350 cm^-1 ; DFT; B3LYP). The rates for energy transfer, k_ET (S₁ ), for ¹ Bodipy*→Q are in the order of 10¹⁰ -10¹¹  s^-1 and are surprisingly fast when considering the low absorptivity properties of the lowest energy charge transfer excited state of azophenine. The rational is provided by the calculated frontier molecular orbitals (MOs) which show atomic contributions in the C₆ H₄ C≡CC₆ H₄ arms, thus favoring the double electron exchange mechanism. In the mixed-antenna Bodipy-porphyrin star molecule, the rate for ¹ Bodipy*→porphyrin has also been evaluated (≈16×10¹⁰  s^-1 ) and is among the fastest rates reported for Bodipy-zinc(II)porphyrin pairs. This astonishing result is again explained from the atomic contributions of the C₆ H₄ C≡CC₆ H₄ and C≡CC₆ H₄ arms thus favouring the Dexter process. Here, for the first time, this process is found to be sensitively temperature-dependent. The azophenine turns out to be excellent for electronic communication.

Porphyrin Antenna-Enriched BODIPY-Thiophene Copolymer for Efficient Solar Cells

Low bandgap A-π-D copolymer, P(BdP-DEHT), consisting of alternating BOronDIPYrromethene (BODIPY) and thiophene units bridged by ethynyl linkers, and its porphyrin-enriched analogue, P(BdP/Por-DEHT), were prepared, and their optical and electrochemical properties were studied. P(BdP-DEHT) exhibits strong absorption in the 500-800 nm range with an optical bandgap of 1.74 eV. On the basis of cyclic voltammetry, the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels are evaluated to be -5.40 and -3.66 eV, respectively. After the anchoring of zinc(II) porphyrin on the BODIPY unit, P(BdP/Por-DEHT) displays broadened absorption, thanks to porphyrins, and the optical bandgap decreases to 1.59 eV because of extension of BODIPY conjugation. The resulting estimated HOMO and LUMO energy levels, respectively, move to -5.32 and -3.73 eV. After optimization of the P(BdP-DEHT) or P(BdP/Por-DEHT) to PC₇₁BM weight ratio to 1:2 in dichlorobenzene solution, the bulk heterojunction polymer solar cells show overall power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 3.03 and 3.86%, respectively. After solvent vapor annealing (SVA) treatment in CH₂Cl₂ for 40 s, the PCEs increased to 7.40% [V_oc of 0.95 V, J_sc of 12.77 mA/cm², and fill factor (FF) of 0.61 with energy loss of 0.79 eV] and 8.79% (V_oc of 0.92 V, J_sc of 14.48 mA/cm², and FF of 0.66 with energy loss of 0.67 eV). The increase in the PCE for P(BdP/Por-DEHT)-based devices is mainly attributed to the enhancement in J_sc and FF, which may be related to the broader absorption spectra, lower band gap, and better charge transport of P(BdP/Por-DEHT) compared to P(BdP-DEHT). This could also be related to the optimized nanoscale morphology of the active layer for both efficient exciton dissociation and charge transport toward the electrodes and a balanced charge transport in the device, induced by the SVA treatment of the active layer.

Synthesis, the electronic properties and efficient photoinduced electron transfer of new pyrrolidine[60]fullerene- and isoxazoline[60]fullerene-BODIPY dyads: nitrile oxide cycloaddition under mild conditions using PIFA

The first synthesis of fulleroisoxazoline-BODIPY whose electron-accepting ability of the C₆₀ cage is better than its fulleropyrrolidine-BODIPY counterpart.
