A novel hexanuclear titanium(iv)-oxo-iminodiacetate cluster with a Ti6O9 core: single-crystal structure and photocatalytic activities

Structural Characterization and Bioactivity of a Titanium(IV)-Oxo Complex Stabilized by Mandelate Ligands

Research on titanium-oxo complexes (TOCs) is usually focused on their structure and photocatalytic properties. Findings from these investigations further sparked our interest in exploring their potential biological activities. In this study, we focused on the synthesis and structure of a compound with the general formula [Ti8O2(OiPr)20(man)4] (1), which was isolated from the reaction mixture of titanium(IV) isopropoxide with mandelic acid (Hman) in a molar ratio of 4:1. The structure (1) was determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, while spectroscopic studies provided insights into its physicochemical properties. To assess the potential practical applications of (1), its microcrystals were incorporated into a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) matrix, yielding composite materials of the type PMMA + (1) (2 wt.%, 5 wt.%, 10 wt.%, and 20 wt.%). The next stage of our research involved the evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of the obtained materials. The investigations performed demonstrated the antimicrobial activity of pure (1) and its composites (PMMA + (1)) against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains. Furthermore, MTT tests conducted on the L929 murine fibroblast cell line confirmed the lack of cytotoxicity of these composites. Our study identified (1) as a promising antimicrobial agent, which is also may be use for producing composite coatings.

A facile bottom-up method for synthesis of peroxo-potassium titanate nanoribbons and visible light photocatalytic activity derived from a peroxo-titanium bond

Low-dimensional titanate nanostructures are gaining attention as a promising material for various photocatalytic applications. However, these conventional titanium oxide-based materials cannot utilize visible light because of their wide bandgap, and their synthesis generally requires high-alkali (10 mol L^-1) and high-temperature (160-200 °C) conditions. Here, we report facile bottom-up synthesis for the visible light-activated peroxo-titanate nanoribbon (PTNR). The use of the peroxo-titanium complex ion containing the potassium ion as a precursor can induce the formation of a layered potassium titanate structure (K_2-x H _x Ti₂O₅) based on the self-organization reaction between titanium complex ions and potassium ions under mild synthetic conditions (0.29-4.39 mol L^-1 KOH, 100 °C). Furthermore, the requirement of potassium ions in the formation of layered potassium titanate was stoichiometrically examined. The layered titanate crystals could be grown anisotropically, which depended on the radius of the cation used. Our results newly revealed that the larger radius of the interlayer cation promotes anisotropic crystal growth. As a result, in the case of the potassium base, a nanoribbon structure with a higher aspect ratio and larger specific surface area than those of lithium and sodium bases was formed. The formed peroxo-titanium functional groups significantly reduced the bandgap of titanate to 2.64 eV. In a photocatalytic decolorization test, the PTNR showed excellent photocatalytic performance based on the large surface area and enhanced light absorption in the visible light range while still performing well under UV light. These findings show not only that the proposed synthetic process has a low environmental impact but also that it contributes to the development of highly functionalized materials for photochemical applications.

Synthesis, Structure, and Light Absorption Behaviors of Prismatic Titanium-Oxo Clusters Containing Lacunary Lindqvist-like Species

Exploring new structural types of polyoxotitanium clusters (PTCs), especially those containing classical polyoxometalates structures, has always been the focus of research in the field of metal-oxo clusters. In this work, we present the synthesis and characterization of three prismatic PTCs: namely, Ti₈(μ₂-O)₃(μ₄-O)₂(OnPr)₆(HOnPr)₂(L1)₈ (PTC-237; H₂L1 = 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol), Ti₁₂(μ₂-O)₆(μ₃-O)₈(OnPr)₆(L2)₁₂(L3)₂ (PTC-238; HL2 = 1-adamantanecarboxylic acid, HL3 = 2-picolinic acid), and [Ti₁₈(μ₂-O)₄(μ₃-O)₁₆(μ₅-O)₂(OiPr)₁₈(L3)₈](L3)₂ (PTC-239). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses indicate that the construction of these prismatic PTCs is based on a stepwise interlayer assembly of {Ti₃} and {Ti₄} substructures. The diameters of their core skeletons are in the range between 0.9 and 1.3 nm. In particular, lacunary Linqvist-like {Ti₄} and {Ti₅} building units are found to exist in the structures of PTC-237 and PTC-239. According to the solid-state UV-vis diffuse reflectance measurements, the absorption band of 3,5-di-tert-butylcatecholate-functionalized PTC-237 shifts toward the visible-light region, giving a smaller optical band gap of 1.56 eV in comparison to PTC-238 (3.36 eV) and PTC-239 (3.25 eV).

A Keggin-type polyoxomolybdate-based crystalline material formed by hydrothermal transformation: photo/electro-catalytic properties and mechanism study

Titanium-Oxo Clusters with Bi- and Tridentate Organic Ligands: Gradual Evolution of the Structures from Small to Big

Homometallic titanium oxo clusters are one of the most important groups of metal oxo clusters, with more than 300 examples characterized by X-ray structure analyses. Most of them are uncharged and are obtained by partial hydrolysis and condensation of titanium alkoxo derivatives. The cluster cores, ranging from 3 to >50 titanium atoms, are stabilized by organic ligands. Apart from residual OR groups, carboxylato and phosphonato ligands are most frequent. The article critically reviews and categorizes the known structures and works out basic construction principles by comparing the different cluster types.

Water-soluble titanium-polyoxomolybdate with external μ3 bridging oxygen coordination on a lacunary Keggin structure

Self-Assembled Supramolecular Polyoxometalate Hybrid Architecture as a Multifunctional Oxidation Catalyst

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are widely applied as tuneable and versatile catalysts for a variety of oxidation reactions in an aqueous/organic two-phase system. However, the practical applications of POMs-based biphasic catalysis are hampered by low space-time yields and mass-transport limitation between two layers due to extremely low solubility of the organic reactants in the aqueous phase. Here, we first introduced β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) as an inverse phase transfer agent and a supramolecular nanoreactor to construct a supramolecular POM inorganic-organic hybrid framework (KCl₄)Na₇[(β-CD)₃(SiW₁₂O₄₀)]·9H₂O {3CD@SiW₁₂} for various oxidation catalyses. In contrast to free CD, Keggin [SiW₁₂O₄₀]^4- catalysts, and their mixture, the {3CD@SiW₁₂} catalyst, efficiently catalyze oxidation reactions of alcohol, alkene, and thiophene. A comprehensive strategy of experimental, crystallographic, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations elucidates that the catalytic pathway involved three combined aspects of supramolecular recognition, phase transfer property, and POM catalysis. The strategic combination of supramolecular characteristic and POM-based catalysts to fabricate supramolecular POM hybrid materials opens up new economic and green tuning options, thus paving the way to informed catalyst design.

A layered titanium(iv)-peroxo-pyridine dicarboxylic cluster: crystal structure and photoelectrochemical sensing of dopamine

A layered titanium(iv)-peroxo-pyridine dicarboxylic cluster K9[Ti3O4(O2)3(C7H3O4N)3(OH2)2]Cl·4H2O 1 has been synthesized by the H2O2-assisted reaction between TiCl4 and dipicolinic acid ligands. The semiconducting properties of this solid state compound were revealed from measurements of the diffuse reflectance UV-vis spectra and photocurrent response. Its photoelectrochemical sensing of dopamine was also investigated.

Novel properties and potential applications of functional ligand-modified polyoxotitanate cages

Functional ligand-modified polyoxotitanate (L-POT) cages of the general type [TixOy(OR)z(L)m] (OR = alkoxide, L = functional ligand) can be regarded as molecular fragments of surface-sensitized solid-state TiO2, and are of value as models for studying the interfacial charge and energy transfer between the bound functional ligands and a bulk semiconductor surface. These L-POTs have also had a marked impact in many other research fields, such as single-source precursors for TiO2 deposition, inorganic-organic hybrid material construction, photocatalysis, photoluminescence, asymmetric catalysis and gas adsorption. Their atomically well-defined structures provide the basis for the understanding of structure/property relationships and ultimately for the rational design of new cages targeting specific uses. This highlight focuses on recent advances in L-POTs research, with emphasis on their novel properties and potential applications.
