Abstract
The development of fluorescent Cd2+ sensors requires strict selectivity over Zn2+ because of the high availability of Zn2+ in the natural environment. In this paper, bisquinoline-based fluorescent sensors with a 2-aminoethanol backbone were investigated. The weak coordination ability of quinoline compared to well-studied pyridine is suitable for Cd2+ selectivity rather than Zn2+. In the presence of 3 equiv. of metal ions, TriMeO-N,O-BQMAE (N,O-bis(5,6,7-trimethoxy-2-quinolylmethyl)-2-methylaminoethanol (3)), as well as its N,N-isomer TriMeO-N,N-BQMAE (N,N-bis(5,6,7-trimethoxy-2-quinolylmethyl)-2-methoxyethylamine (6)), exhibits Cd2+-selective fluorescence enhancement over Zn2+ in DMF-HEPES buffer (1:1, 50 mM HEPES, 0.1 M KCl, pH = 7.5) (IZn/ICd = 26-34%), which has similar selectivity in comparison to the corresponding ethylenediamine derivative TriMeOBQDMEN (N,N'-bis(5,6,7-trimethoxy-2-quinolylmethyl)-N,N'-dimethylethylenediamine) under the same experimental condition (IZn/ICd = 24%). The fluorescence mechanisms of N,O- and N,N-isomers of BQMAE are quite different, judging from the fluorescence lifetimes of their metal complexes. The Cd2+ complex with TriMeO-N,O-BQMAE (3) exhibits a long fluorescence lifetime similar to that of TriMeOBQDMEN via intramolecular excimer emission, whereas the Cd2+ complex with TriMeO-N,N-BQMAE (6) exhibits a short lifetime from monomer emission.

Abstract
This work demonstrates the fabrication of a simple, low-cost naked-eye colorimetric solid-state sensor model for selective sensing of Cd2+. The sensor was developed using a polymer monolithic architect; namely, poly(n-allylthiourea-co-ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate) (poly(ATU-co-EGD) imbued with the chromophoric probe, 3-(quinoline-8-yldiazenyl)quinoline-2,4-diol (QYQD). The concocted indigenous perforated structural assemblies were studied through various microscopic, spectroscopic, and diffraction techniques. The template possessed a uniform arrangement of interconnected macro/mesoporous networks available for the maximum hooking of the QYQD probe moieties for the rapid and enhanced Cd2+ sensing process. The developed sensor offered an enhanced solid-state color transition response from yellow to dark meron for a proportional concentration increase of Cd2+ exhibiting precise absorption spectra with λmax at 475 nm. The relative stoichiometric binding ratio of the QYQD probe with Cd2+ was observed to be 2:1. The enhanced working conditions of the developed poly(ATU-co-EGD)QYQD sensor were tuned by validating various analytical conditions. The sensor exhibited a linear response signal from 2 to 150 ppb of Cd2+, and the corresponding LOD and LOQ values were 0.31 and 1.03 ppb, respectively. The efficacious performance drive of the sensor was validated in real water and cigarette samples that showed excellent data accuracy with a recovery value of ≥ 99.72% (n = 3).

Fluorescent RET-Based Chemosensor Bearing 1,8-Naphthalimide and Styrylpyridine Chromophores for Ratiometric Detection of Hg2+ and Its Bio-Application. BIOSENSORS 2022; 12:bios12090770. Abstract
Dyad compound NI-SP bearing 1,8-naphthalimide (NI) and styrylpyridine (SP) photoactive units, in which the N-phenylazadithia-15-crown-5 ether receptor is linked with the energy donor naphthalimide chromophore, has been evaluated as a ratiometric fluorescent chemosensor for mercury (II) ions in living cells. In an aqueous solution, NI-SP selectively responds to the presence of Hg2+ via the enhancement in the emission intensity of NI due to the inhibition of the photoinduced electron transfer from the receptor to the NI fragment. At the same time, the long wavelength fluorescence band of SP, arising as a result of resonance energy transfer from the excited NI unit, appears to be virtually unchanged upon Hg2+ binding. This allows self-calibration of the optical response. The observed spectral behavior is consistent with the formation of the (NI-SP)·Hg2+ complex (dissociation constant 0.13 ± 0.04 µM). Bio-imaging studies showed that the ratio of fluorescence intensity in the 440–510 nm spectral region to that in the 590–650 nm region increases from 1.1 to 2.8 when cells are exposed to an increasing concentration of mercury (II) ions, thus enabling the detection of intracellular Hg2+ ions and their quantitative analysis in the 0.04–1.65 μM concentration range.

Abstract
A novel dual-functional probe N'-(2-hydroxy-5-((4,7,7-trimethyl-3-oxobicyclo[2.2.1] heptan-2-ylidene)methyl) benzylidene)picolinohydrazide (PSH) was constructed from natural camphor. This probe showed strong yellow-green fluorescence at 535 nm due to its aggregation-induced emission (AIE) feature. Interestingly, the probe PSH displayed a significant turn-on fluorescence response towards Al3+ (green fluorescence at 500 nm) and Zn2+ (orange fluorescence at 555 nm) at two different emissive channels. The detection limits of PSH towards Al3+ and Zn2+ were found to be 12.1 nM and 14.2 nM, respectively. PSH exhibited excellent selectivity and anti-interference performance and could distinguish between Al3+/Zn2+ and identify whether Zn2+ exists in the PSH-Al3+ complex by adding ATP. The binding mechanisms between PSH and Al3+/Zn2+ ions were supported by 1H NMR, HRMS analysis, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Based on its outstanding sensing properties, the probe PSH was used to establish molecular logic function gates. Moreover, the probe PSH could be applied to detect Al3+ and Zn2+ in real environmental water, and fluorescence detection was well demonstrated by test strips. Furthermore, the probe PSH was employed for imaging Al3+ and Zn2+ in HeLa cells and zebrafish.

Abstract
A novel dual-functional chemosensor, derived from the conjugation of rhodamine B with a quinoline derivative (RHQ), was firstly synthesized with high efficiency and cost-effectiveness for the distinguishable detections of Cu2+ and Hg2+ via ring-opening and ring-forming mechanism. The chemosensor exhibits highly selective and distinguishable responses for Cu2+ and Hg2+ in CH3CN-H2O (4:1, v/v) with off-on fluorescence and ratiometric ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption changes. Additionally, Cu2+ is identified by opening a rhodamine spirocycle with a UV-Vis absorption band, at around 560 nm and fluorescence turn-on. Interestingly, Hg2+ is discerned by opening the rhodamine spirocycle and by generating a new special cycle for the quinoline unit. Resultantly, there were two UV-Vis absorption bands at around 365 nm and 560 nm, which were accompanied by fluorescence turn-on. Moreover, the chemosensor can quantitatively detect Cu2+ and Hg2+ by off-on fluorescence and ratiometric UV-Vis absorption changes, respectively. Furthermore, the chemosensor with low cytotoxicity could be successfully administered to monitor Cu2+ and Hg2+ in living cells. This work may pay the way for the development of dual-functional chemosensor for quantificationally detecting metal ions in environmental and biological systems.

Abstract
Bis(styryl) dye 1 bearing N-phenylazadithia-15-crown-5 ether receptor has been evaluated as a ratiometric fluorescent chemosensor for mercury (II) ions in living cells. In aqueous solution, probe 1 selectively responds to the presence of Hg2+ via the changes in the emission intensity as well as in the emission band shape, which is a result of formation of the complex with 1:1 metal to ligand ratio (dissociation constant 0.56 ± 0.15 µM). The sensing mechanism is based on the interplay between the RET (resonance energy transfer) and ICT (intramolecular charge transfer) interactions occurring upon the UV/Vis (380 or 405 nm) photoexcitation of both styryl chromophores in probe 1. Bio-imaging studies revealed that the yellow (500-600 nm) to red (600-730 nm) fluorescence intensity ratio decreased from 4.4 ± 0.2 to 1.43 ± 0.10 when cells were exposed to increasing concentration of mercury (II) ions enabling ratiometric quantification of intracellular Hg2+ concentration in the 37 nM-1 μM range.

Abstract
A pair of homologues, [Zn(Hssa)(1,4-bib)·H2O]n (1) and [Zn3(ssa)2(1,4-bib)3·4H2O]n (2), were successfully assembled using the same metals and ligands [H3ssa = 5-sulfosalicylic acid; 1,4-bib = 1,4-bis(1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzene] under solvothermal conditions. Polymer 1 is a two-dimensional (2D) sql network and polymer 2 is a three-dimensional (3D) framework. Polymer 2 can be simplified into two topology types: bct and tfc. The two polymers show significant differences in the fluorescence sensing of metal ions and proton conductivity. Their applications in detecting metal ions and proton conductivity were explored. Polymer 1 shows high sensitivity and selectivity for Fe3+, while polymer 2 can detect Hg2+ ions. The limit of detection was 1.66 μM with Fe3+ for 1 and 0.23 μM with Hg2+ for 2 in water. In addition, both 1 and 2 exhibit high water stability and proton conductivity. At 60 °C and 95% relative humidity, their conductivities were 3.45 × 10-5 and 6.26 × 10-6 S cm-1, respectively. A detailed analysis of the Hirshfeld surface and fingerprints was carried out for 1 and 2 to compare the interactions between the molecules, which is essential for analysing the relationship between their structures and material properties.

Abstract
A convenient and efficient method to eliminate the aggregation effect of organic photoelectric sensing materials and to improve biological compatibility and cell permeability as well was developed by hanging organic fluorophores on a polymer chain, for example, fluorescein fluorophores had been controllably hung on polyacrylamide main chains with a 1:2 stoichiometric ratio by a simple copolymerization strategy. The results showed that introduction of water-soluble bioactive polyacrylamide main chains into fluorescein fluorophores via covalent bonds could effectively improve their optical stability by deteriorating π-π stack and charge-transfer interactions among different fluorophores. More importantly, the resultant materials possessed low toxicity and excellent cell permeability ten times larger than their precursor fluorescein fluorophore, which made it express an especially turn-on fluorescent response to ultratrace Hg2+ both in aqueous and living cells by forming stable 5-member-ring complexes with Hg2+ with a correlation coefficient of 0.997 and a low detection limit of 4.0 × 10-10 mol·L-1. This work provides promising insight into constructing some practical sensing materials for environmentally-friendly biological analyses.

Abstract
A novel Schiff base fluorescent probe 7-Hydroxy-8-(((2-(hydroxymethyl)quinolin-8-yl)imino)methyl)-coumarin (XL) consist of formylcoumarin and aminoquinoline moieties was synthesized for dual detection of Zn2+ and Al3+ ions. Probe XL exhibited high selective and sensitive response towards Zn2+ and Al3+ ions through different color changes and significant fluorescence turn-on response (270 fold higher for Zn2+ and 230 fold higher for Al3+) in MeOH-H2O (4/1, v/v) over other cations, with detection limits (LOD) as low as 3.75 × 10-8 and 1.14 × 10-8 M, respectively. Moreover, probe XL exhibited preferential selectivity for Al3+ through displacing Zn2+ from the XL-Zn2+ complex by ligand-to-ligand transfer process. The binding mechanism of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) were proposed from fluorescence and UV-vis titrations, Job's plot, 1H NMR titration, HRMS and DFT calculations. The probe was proven to be suitable for actual samples detection of Zn2+ and Al3+ ions. The complex XL-Zn2+ and XL-Al3+ exhibited dramatic fluorescent "turn-off" properties for PPi and PPi/F- respectively through snatching metal ions and released free XL. Moreover, probe XL showed low biotoxicity and sequentially "off-on-off" fluorescent bio-imaging of Zn2+/Al3+ and PPi/F- in PC12 cells.

Abstract
A novel coumarin-derived Schiff base fluorescence probe (CTB) has been successfully designed and synthesized through exploiting tris-(2-aminothyl)-amine moiety as a recognition unit for the highly selective and sensitive detection of Cd2+. It is based on CN isomerization and the photo-induced electron transfer (PET) mechanism. The investigation into the sensing processes showed that CTB exhibited an excellent selectivity for Cd2+. The sensitivity exceeded that of other competing metal ions, and had a high sensitivity, a detection limit of 1.16 × 10-7 M with the association constants of 1.37 × 1011 M-2. The experiments including Job's plot, UV-Vis titration, 1H NMR titration and ESI-MS spectrum established that the probe CTB binds to Cd2+ in a 1:2 ratio. Further studies also demonstrated that probe CTB can be successfully applied to the fluorescence imaging of Cd2+ in HepG-2 cells.

Abstract
Since the accumulation of mercury (II) ions in the environment and ecosystem causes serious problems to environment and disease, the recognition of Hg2+ ions and its bio-imaging is of high importance. In sight of the advantages of fluorescence probes, a new probe (PMH) was facilely synthesized by incorporating phenylimidazole fluorophore and 3-methyl-2- benzothiazolinone hydrazone hydrochloride monohydrate. The PMH probe exhibited a ratiometric response for Hg2+ ions with fluorescence intensity increasing at 520 nm and decreasing at 445 nm simultaneously. The PMH probe interacted with Hg2+ ions in seconds with high optical stability and showed good selectivity over other metal ions. In addition, the probe has excellent biocompatibility and imaging performance in cells and zebrafish.

Abstract
A simple Schiff base fluorescent sensor (BDNOL) was synthesized from the reaction of picolinohydrazide and 4-(diethylamino)salicylaldehyde, and developed for selective detection of Al3+ and Zn2+. This non-fluorescent sensor displayed obvious fluorescence enhancement after binding to Al3+/Zn2+ ions with high sensitivity and selectivity, accompanied by obvious fluorescence emission enhancement (504 nm for Al3+ and 575 nm for Zn2+). The detection limits were found to be 8.30 × 10-8 M for Al3+ and 1.24 × 10-7 M for Zn2+. The binding mechanisms between BDNOL and Al3+/Zn2+ ions were supported by 1H NMR and HR-MS analysis, and a density functional theory (DFT) study. The sensing behavior was also studied with molecular logic functions of OR, AND, and NOT gates. Furthermore, the fluorescent sensor was successfully used to recognize Al3+ and Zn2+ in living cells, suggesting that this simple biosensor has great potential in biological imaging applications.

Abstract
Two rhodamine-active probes RBAI (Rhodamine B-di-Aminobenzene-phenyl Isothiocyanate) and RGAI (Rhodamine 6G-di-Aminobenzene-phenyl Isothiocyanate) were designed, synthesized and characterized. The probes were developed as fluorescent and colorimetric chemodosimeters in ethanol-water solution with a broad pH span (5-10) and high selectivity toward Hg2+ but no significant response toward other common competitive cations. The Hg2+-promoted ring opening of spirolactam of the rhodamine moiety induced cyclic guanylation of the thiourea moiety, which resulted in the dual chromo- and fluorogenic observation (off-on). Cytotoxicity and bioimaging studies by L929 living cells and living mice indicated that the probes were negligible cytotoxicity, cell permeable and suitable for detecting Hg2+ in biological environments. Moreover, the new probes not only displayed excellent abilities for the successful detection of Hg2+ in L929 living cells and living mice but also able to detect Hg2+ by adsorbing on solid surfaces and quantitative detection of Hg2+ in real water samples with good recovery (more than 90%), indicating that they have promising prospect for application for Hg2+ sensing in environmental and biological sciences.
