Al(III) and Ga(III) Bisphenolate Azadipyrromethene-Based “N2O2” Complexes as Efficient NIR-Fluorophores

Aza-boron-dipyrromethenes (Aza-BODIPYs) are an increasingly studied class of fluorophores. They can be seen as an azadipyrromethene ("aza-DIPY") ligand rigidified by a metalloid, a boron atom. Based on this idea, a series of complexes of group 13 metals (aluminum and gallium) have been synthesized and characterized. The impact of the metal and of the nature of the substituents of aza-DIPY core were investigated. The photophysical and electrochemical properties were determined, and an X-ray structure of an azaGaDIPY was obtained. These data reveal that azaGaDIPY and azaAlDIPY exhibit significant red-shifted fluorescence compared to their analogue aza-BODIPY. Their emission can go up to 800 nm for the maximum emission length and up to NIR-II for the emission tail. This, associated with their electrochemical stability (no metal release whether oxidized or reduced) makes them a promising class of fluorophores for optical medical imaging. Moreover, X-ray structure and molecular modeling studies have shown that this redshift seems to be more due to the geometry around the boron/metal than to the nature of the metal.

Heteroleptic copper(I) charge-transfer chromophores with panchromatic absorption

Four new heteroleptic bis-chelate Cu(I) complexes showing panchromatic visible absorption are described here. With this heteroleptic design, we demonstrate that the energy levels of the spatially separated HOMO and LUMO can be independently and systematically controlled via ligand modification, with charge-transfer absorption bands throughout the visible and NIR regions that cover a wider range than typical Cu(I) chromophores.

"Chemistry-on-the-complex": functional RuII polypyridyl-type sensitizers as divergent building blocks

Ruthenium polypyridyl type complexes are potent photoactive compounds, and have found - among others - a broad range of important applications in the fields of biomedical diagnosis and phototherapy, energy conversion schemes such as dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) and molecular assemblies for tailored photo-initiated processes. In this regard, the linkage of RuII polypyridyl-type complexes with specific functional moieties is highly desirable to enhance their inherent photophysical properties, e.g., with a targeting function to achieve cell selectivity, or with a dye or redox-active subunits for energy- and electron-transfer. However, the classical approach of performing ligand syntheses first and the formation of Ru complexes in the last steps imposes synthetic limitations with regard to tolerating functional groups or moieties as well as requiring lengthy convergent routes. Alternatively, the diversification of Ru complexes after coordination (termed "chemistry-on-the-complex") provides an elegant complementary approach. In addition to the Click chemistry concept, the rapidly developing synthesis and purification methodologies permit the preparation of Ru conjugates via amidation, alkylation and cross-coupling reactions. In this regard, recent developments in chromatography shifted the limits of purification, e.g., by using new commercialized surface-modified silica gels and automated instrumentation. This review provides detailed insights into applying the "chemistry-on-the-complex" concept, which is believed to stimulate the modular preparation of unpreceded molecular assemblies as well as functional materials based on Ru-based building blocks, including combinatorial approaches.

New Ligand Design Provides Delocalization and Promotes Strong Absorption throughout the Visible Region in a Ru(II) Complex

The new Ru(II)-anthraquinone complex [Ru(bpy)₂(qdpq)](PF₆)₂ (Ru-qdpq; bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine; qdpq = 2,3-di(2-pyridyl)naphtho[2,3-f]quinoxaline-7,12-quinone) possesses a strong ¹MLCT Ru → qdpq absorption with a maximum at 546 nm that tails into the near-IR and is significantly red-shifted relative to that of the related complex [Ru(bpy)₂(qdppz)](PF₆)₂ (Ru-qdppz; qdppz = naphtho[2,3-a]dipyrido[3,2-h:2',3'-f]phenazine-5,18-dione), with λ_max = 450 nm. Ru-qdppz possesses electronically isolated proximal and distal qdppz-based excited states; the former is initially generated and decays to the latter, which repopulates the ground state with τ = 362 ps. In contrast, excitation of Ru-qdpq results in the population of a relatively long-lived (τ = 19 ns) Ru(dπ) → qdpq(π*) ³MLCT excited state where the promoted electron is delocalized throughout the qdpq ligand. Ultrafast spectroscopy, used together with steady-state absorption, electrochemistry, and DFT calculations, indicates that the unique coordination modes of the qdpq and qdppz ligands impart substantially different electronic communication throughout the quinone-containing ligand, affecting the excited state and electron transfer properties of these molecules. These observations create a pathway to synthesize complexes with red-shifted absorptions that possess long-lived, redox-active excited states that are useful for various applications, including solar energy conversion and photochemotherapy.
