This review covers the development of the transition metal-catalysed hydroboration reaction, from its beginnings in the 1980s to more recent developments including earth-abundant catalysts and an ever-expanding array of substrates.

First-Row d-Block Element-Catalyzed Carbon-Boron Bond Formation and Related Processes

Organoboron reagents represent a unique class of compounds because of their utility in modern synthetic organic chemistry, often affording unprecedented reactivity. The transformation of the carbon-boron bond into a carbon-X (X = C, N, and O) bond in a stereocontrolled fashion has become invaluable in medicinal chemistry, agrochemistry, and natural products chemistry as well as materials science. Over the past decade, first-row d-block transition metals have become increasingly widely used as catalysts for the formation of a carbon-boron bond, a transformation traditionally catalyzed by expensive precious metals. This recent focus on alternative transition metals has enabled growth in fundamental methods in organoboron chemistry. This review surveys the current state-of-the-art in the use of first-row d-block element-based catalysts for the formation of carbon-boron bonds.

Earth-Abundant Transition Metal Catalysts for Alkene Hydrosilylation and Hydroboration: Opportunities and Assessments

The addition of a silicon-hydrogen or a boron-hydrogen bond across a carbon-carbon multiple bonds is a well-established method for the introduction of versatile silane and borane functional groups to base hydrocarbon feedstocks. Transition metal catalysis, historically with precious second- and third- row transition metals, has been used to broaden the scope of the hydrofunctionalization reaction, improve reaction rate and enhance selectivity. The anti-Markovnikov selectivity of platinum-catalyzed hydrosilylation of alkenes, for example, is an enabling synthetic technology in the multibillion-dollar silicones industry. Increased emphasis on sustainable catalytic methods and more economic processes has shifted focus to catalysis with more earth-abundant transition metals such as iron, cobalt and nickel. This review describes contemporary approaches and offers a contextual analysis of catalytic alkene hydrosilylation and hydroboration reactions using first-row transition metals. Emphasis is placed on defining advances in the field, what constitutes catalyst cost, safety, and important design features to enable precious metal-like reactivity, as well as new chemistry that is unique to first-row transition metals.

Hydroboration of alkynes and nitriles using an α-diimine cobalt hydride catalyst

Addition of NaEt₃BH to (^Ph2PPrDI)CoCl₂ affords the corresponding monohydride, (^Ph2PPrDI)CoH. X-ray diffraction and DFT calculations indicate that this compound possesses a radical monoanion α-DI chelate and a Co(ii) centre. Notably, (^Ph2PPrDI)CoH catalyzes the hydroboration of alkynes and dihydroboration of nitriles under mild conditions.

Walking Metals for Remote Functionalization

The distant and selective activation of unreactive C-H and C-C bonds remains one of the biggest challenges in organic chemistry. In recent years, the development of remote functionalization has received growing interest as it allows for the activation of rather challenging C-H and C-C bonds distant from the initiation point by means of a "metal-walk". A "metal-walk" or "chain-walk" is defined by an iterative series of consecutive 1,2- or 1,3-hydride shifts of a metal complex along a single hydrocarbon chain. With this approach, simple building blocks or mixtures thereof can be transformed into complex scaffolds in a convergent and unified strategy. A variety of catalytic systems have been developed and refined over the past decade ranging from late-transition-metal complexes to more sustainable iron- and cobalt-based systems. As the possibilities of this field are slowly unfolding, this area of research will contribute considerably to provide solutions to yet unmet synthetic challenges.
