Selective Formation of Small and Large Coordination Cages and Their Catalytic Differences

Self-assembly of CuX2 (X- = BF4-, ClO4-, and CF3SO3-) with a new tridentate 5,5',5″-(((2,4,6-trimethylbenzene-1,3,5-triyl)tris(methylene))tris(oxy))triisoquinoline (L) gives rise to single-crystal pairs consisting of small and large cages, [X@Cu2X2L4]X and [Cu6X12L8], respectively, via selection of solvents. In particular, the large cage is transformed into a small cage in acetonitrile above 50 °C. A significant difference in heterogeneous catechol oxidation catalysis between the small and large cages is observed. Such notable catechol-oxidation-catalytic effects can be explained by maintenance of the Cu···Cu distance at the catalytic center. This research is a direct systematic example of both cage-size control via solvent selection and the significance of the Cu···Cu distance in catechol oxidation catalysis with copper (Cu).

Zn(II)-Siloxane Clusters as Versatile Building Blocks for Carboxylate-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

Siloxanes have long been known for their highly desirable properties suited for a wide range of practical applications; however, their utilization as modular building blocks for crystalline open frameworks has been limited. In this study, a simple solvothermal pathway has been found to synthesize unprecedented Zn(II)-siloxane clusters supported by acetate ligands, [(RSiO2)8Zn8(CH3CO2)8] (R = Me or Ph). The same reaction using a dicarboxylate ligand such as 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate or 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate produces a new type of metal-organic framework, named SiMOF here, based on the [Si8Zn8] units. With the maximum connectivity of 8, the building block is shown to form topologically interesting structures such as octahedral supercages or uninodal 8-connected frameworks. All SiMOFs synthesized possess permanent porosity and high thermal stability and are naturally hydrophobic, as demonstrated by adsorptions of toluene, ethanol, methanol, and water vapor as well as water contact angle measurements. These promising characteristics for well-defined porous solids are attributed to metal-bound siloxane groups in the structural building units.

Cage-like Cu5Cs4-Phenylsilsesquioxanes: Synthesis, Supramolecular Structures, and Catalytic Activity

A small family of nonanuclear Cu5Cs4-based phenylsilsesquioxanes 1-2 were prepared by a convenient self-assembly approach and characterized by X-ray diffraction studies. The compounds 1 and 2 show some unprecedented structural features such as the presence of a [Ph14Si14O28]14- silsesquioxane ligand and a CuII5CsI4 nuclearity in which the metal cations occupy unusual positions within the cluster. Copper ions are "wrapped" into a silsesquioxane matrix, while cesium ions are located in external positions. This resulted in cesium-involved aggregation of coordination polymer structures. Both compounds 1 and 2 realize specific metallocene (cesium-phenyl) linkage between neighboring cages. Compound 2 is evaluated as a catalyst in the Baeyer-Villiger (B-V) oxidation of cyclohexanone and tandem cyclohexane oxidation/B-V oxidation of cyclohexanone with m-chloroperoxybenzoic acid (mCPBA) as an oxidant, in an aqueous acetonitrile medium, and HNO3 as the promoter. A quantitative yield of ε-caprolactone was achieved under conventional heating at 50 °C for 4 h or MW irradiation for 30 min (for cyclohexanone as substrate); 17 and 19% yields of lactone upon MW irradiation at 80 °C for 30 min and heating at 50 °C for 4 h, respectively (for cyclohexane as a substrate), were achieved. Complex 2 was evaluated as a catalyst for the oxidation of alkanes to alkyl hydroperoxides and alcohols to ketones with peroxides at 60 °C in acetonitrile. The maximum yield of cyclohexane oxidation products was 30%. Complex 2 exhibits high activity in the oxidation of alcohols.

Cagelike Octacopper Methylsilsesquioxanes: Self-Assembly in the Focus of Alkaline Metal Ion Influence-Synthesis, Structure, and Catalytic Activity

A family of unusual octacopper cage methylsilsesquioxanes 1-4 were prepared and characterized. Features of their cagelike (prismatic) structure were established using X-ray diffraction studies. Effects of distortion of prismatic cages 1-4 due to variation of (i) additional alkaline metal ions (K, Rb, or Cs), (ii) combination of solvating ligands, and (iii) nature of encapsulating species were found. Opportunities for the design of supramolecular 1D extended structures were found. These opportunities are based on (i) formate linkers between copper centers (in the case of Cu₈K₂-based compound 2) or (ii) crown ether-like contacts between cesium ions and siloxane cycles (in the case of Cu₈Cs₂-based compound 4). Cu₈Cs₂-complex 4 was evaluated in the catalysis of alkanes and alcohols. Complex 4 exhibits high catalytic activity. The yield of cyclohexane oxidation products is 35%. The presence of nitric acid is necessary as a co-catalyst. The oxidation of alcohols with the participation of complex 4 as a catalyst and tert-butyl hydroperoxide as an oxidizer also proceeds in high yields of up to 98%.

Hybrid Silsesquioxane/Benzoate Cu7-Complexes: Synthesis, Unique Cage Structure, and Catalytic Activity

A series of phenylsilsesquioxane-benzoate heptacopper complexes 1-3 were synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography. Two parallel routes of toluene spontaneous oxidation (into benzyl alcohol and benzoate) assisted the formation of the cagelike structure 1. A unique multi-ligation of copper ions (from (i) silsesquioxane, (ii) benzoate, (iii) benzyl alcohol, (iv) pyridine, (v) dimethyl-formamide and (vi) water ligands) was found in 1. Directed self-assembly using benzoic acid as a reactant afforded complexes 2-3 with the same main structural features as for 1, namely heptanuclear core coordinated by (i) two distorted pentameric cyclic silsesquioxane and (ii) four benzoate ligands, but featuring other solvate surroundings. Complex 3 was evaluated as a catalyst for the oxidation of alkanes to alkyl hydroperoxides and alcohols to ketones with hydrogen peroxide and tert-butyl hydroperoxide, respectively, at 50 °C in acetonitrile. The maximum yield of cyclohexane oxidation products as high as 32% was attained. The oxidation reaction results in a mixture of cyclohexyl hydroperoxide, cyclohexanol, and cyclohexanone. Upon the addition of triphenylphosphine, the cyclohexyl hydroperoxide is completely converted to cyclohexanol. The specific regio- and chemoselectivity in the oxidation of n-heptane and methylcyclohexane, respectively, indicate the involvement of of hydroxyl radicals. Complex 3 exhibits a high activity in the oxidation of alcohols.

Homogeneous oxidation of C–H bonds with m-CPBA catalysed by a Co/Fe system: mechanistic insights from the point of view of the oxidant

A Co/Fe system efficiently catalyses the oxidation of C–H bonds with m-CPBA. The nitric acid promoter hampers the m-CPBA homolysis, suppressing the free radical activity. Experimental and computational data evidence a concerted oxidation mechanism.

Cage-like manganesesilsesquioxanes: features of their synthesis, unique structure, and catalytic activity in oxidative amidations

A family of Mn-based cage-like silsesquioxanes (and complexes with 1,10-phenanthroline) exhibits unique types of molecular architectures and catalytic activity in oxidative amidation reactions.

A Carbonate-Templated Decanuclear Mn Nanocage with Two Different Silsesquioxane Ligands

The mild reaction of the preorganized silsesquioxane precursor with Mn(II) acetate under ambient conditions results in a mixed-valent {Mn^II₆Mn^III₄} nanocage (SD/Mn10) which is protected by both acyclic trimer [Si3] and cyclic tetramer [Si4]. Serendipitous capture of atmospheric CO₂ as a μ₅-carbonate anion placed at the center supports the formation of the cluster. The magnetic analysis reveals the strong antiferromagnetic interactions between Mn ions. Moreover, the drop-casting film of SD/Mn10 shows photoelectric activity indicating its great potential as a semiconductor for photoelectric conversion applications.

Oxidation of Organic Compounds with Peroxides Catalyzed by Polynuclear Metal Compounds

The review describes articles that provide data on the synthesis and study of the properties of catalysts for the oxidation of alkanes, olefins, and alcohols. These catalysts are polynuclear complexes of iron, copper, osmium, nickel, manganese, cobalt, vanadium. Such complexes for example are: [Fe2(HPTB)(m-OH)(NO3)2](NO3)2·CH3OH·2H2O, where HPTB-¼N,N,N0,N0-tetrakis(2-benzimidazolylmethyl)-2-hydroxo-1,3-diaminopropane; complex [(PhSiO1,5)6]2[CuO]4[NaO0.5]4[dppmO2]2, where dppm-1,1-bis(diphenylphosphino)methane; (2,3-η-1,4-diphenylbut-2-en-1,4-dione)undecacarbonyl triangulotriosmium; phenylsilsesquioxane [(PhSiO1.5)10(CoO)5(NaOH)]; bi- and tri-nuclear oxidovanadium(V) complexes [{VO(OEt)(EtOH)}2(L2)] and [{VO(OMe)(H2O)}3(L3)]·2H2O (L2 = bis(2-hydroxybenzylidene)terephthalohydrazide and L3 = tris(2-hydroxybenzylidene)benzene-1,3,5-tricarbohydrazide); [Mn2L2O3][PF6]2 (L = 1,4,7-trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane). For comparison, articles are introduced describing catalysts for the oxidation of alkanes and alcohols with peroxides, which are simple metal salts or mononuclear metal complexes. In many cases, polynuclear complexes exhibit higher activity compared to mononuclear complexes and exhibit increased regioselectivity, for example, in the oxidation of linear alkanes. The review contains a description of some of the mechanisms of catalytic reactions. Additionally presented are articles comparing the rates of oxidation of solvents and substrates under oxidizing conditions for various catalyst structures, which allows researchers to conclude about the nature of the oxidizing species. This review is focused on recent works, as well as review articles and own original studies of the authors.

Metal Complexes Containing Redox-Active Ligands in Oxidation of Hydrocarbons and Alcohols: A Review

Ligands are innocent when they allow oxidation states of the central atoms to be defined. A noninnocent (or redox) ligand is a ligand in a metal complex where the oxidation state is not clear. Dioxygen can be a noninnocent species, since it exists in two oxidation states, i.e., superoxide (O2−) and peroxide (O22−). This review is devoted to oxidations of C–H compounds (saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons) and alcohols with peroxides (hydrogen peroxide, tert-butyl hydroperoxide) catalyzed by complexes of transition and nontransition metals containing innocent and noninnocent ligands. In many cases, the oxidation is induced by hydroxyl radicals. The mechanisms of the formation of hydroxyl radicals from H2O2 under the action of transition (iron, copper, vanadium, rhenium, etc.) and nontransition (aluminum, gallium, bismuth, etc.) metal ions are discussed. It has been demonstrated that the participation of the second hydrogen peroxide molecule leads to the rapture of O–O bond, and, as a result, to the facilitation of hydroxyl radical generation. The oxidation of alkanes induced by hydroxyl radicals leads to the formation of relatively unstable alkyl hydroperoxides. The data on regioselectivity in alkane oxidation allowed us to identify an oxidizing species generated in the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide: (hydroxyl radical or another species). The values of the ratio-of-rate constants of the interaction between an oxidizing species and solvent acetonitrile or alkane gives either the kinetic support for the nature of the oxidizing species or establishes the mechanism of the induction of oxidation catalyzed by a concrete compound. In the case of a bulky catalyst molecule, the ratio of hydroxyl radical attack rates upon the acetonitrile molecule and alkane becomes higher. This can be expanded if we assume that the reactions of hydroxyl radicals occur in a cavity inside a voluminous catalyst molecule, where the ratio of the local concentrations of acetonitrile and alkane is higher than in the whole reaction volume. The works of the authors of this review in this field are described in more detail herein.

Space Craft-like Octanuclear Co(II)-Silsesquioxane Nanocages: Synthesis, Structure, Magnetic Properties, Solution Behavior, and Catalytic Activity for Hydroboration of Ketones

Two novel space craft-like octanuclear Co(II)-silsesquioxane nanocages, {Co₈[(MeSiO₂)₄]₂(dmpz)₈} (SD/Co8a) and {Co₈[(PhSiO₂)₄]₂(dmpz)₈} (SD/Co8b) (SD = SunDi; Hdmpz = 3,5-dimethylpyrazole), have been constructed from two similar multidentate silsesquioxane ligands assisted with a pyrazole ligand. The Co₈ skeleton consists of eight tetrahedral Co(II) ions arranged in a ring and is further capped by two (MeSiO₂)₄ ligands up and down. The auxiliary dmpz^- ligands seal the ring finally. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry revealed SD/Co8a and SD/Co8b are highly stable in CH₂Cl₂. Magnetic analysis implies that SD/Co8a announces antiferromagnetic interactions between Co(II) ions. Moreover, both of them display good homogeneous catalytic activity for hydroboration of ketones in the presence of pinacolborane under mild conditions.

Preparation and Characterization of Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Macrocyclic Compounds: Cyclic Ladder-like Polyphenylsilsesquioxanes

Organic-inorganic hybrid macrocyclic compounds, cyclic polyphenylsilsesquioxanes (cyc-PSQs), have been synthesized through hydrolysis and condensation reactions of phenyltrichlorosilane. Structural characterization has revealed that cyc-PSQs consist of a closed-ring double-chain siloxane inorganic backbone bearing organic phenyl groups. The cyc-PSQ molecules have been simulated and structurally optimized using the Forcite tool as implemented in Materials Studio. Structurally optimized cyc-PSQs are highly symmetrical and regular with high stereoregularity, consistent with the dimensions of their experimentally derived structures. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that these macrocyclic compounds have excellent thermal stability. In addition to these perfectly structured compounds, macrocyclic compounds with the same ring ladder structure but bearing an additional Si-OH group, cyc-PSQs-OH, have also been synthesized. A possible mechanism for the formation of the closed-ring molecular structures of cyc-PSQs and cyc-PSQs-OH is proposed.

New Ni4Na2-phenylgermsesquioxane architecture: synthesis, structure and slow dynamic behaviour

The first Ni(ii)-based germaniumsesquioxane cage compound [(PhGeO_1.5)₁₀(NiO)₄(NaO_0.5)₂] presents a unique sandwich-like structure and exhibits slow dynamics of the magnetization.

Si10Cu6N4 Cage Hexacoppersilsesquioxanes Containing N Ligands: Synthesis, Structure, and High Catalytic Activity in Peroxide Oxidations

The synthesis, composition, and catalytic properties of a new family of hexanuclear Cu(II)-based phenylsilsesquioxanes are described here. Structural studies of 17 synthesized compounds revealed the general principle underlying their molecular topology: viz., a central metal oxide layer consisting of two Cu₃ trimers is coordinated by two cyclic [PhSiO_1.5]₅ siloxanolate ligands to form a skewed sandwich architecture with the composition [(PhSiO_1.5)₁₀(CuO)₆]²⁺. In addition to this O ligation by the siloxanolate rings, two opposite copper ions are additionally coordinated by the nitrogen atoms of corresponding N ligand(s), such as 2,2'-bipyridine (compounds 1-9), 1,10-phenanthroline (compounds 10-13), mixed 1,10-phenanthroline/2,2'-bipyridine (compound 14), or bathophenanthroline (compounds 15-17). Finally, the charge balance is maintained by two HO^- (compounds 1-7, 10-13, and 15-17), two H₃CO^- (compound 8), or two CH₃COO^- (compounds 9 and 14) anions. Complexes 1 and 10 exhibited a high activity in the oxidative amidation oxidation of alcohols. Compounds 1, 10, and 15 are very efficient homogeneous catalysts in the oxidation of alkanes and alcohols with peroxides.

Family of Polynuclear Nickel Cagelike Phenylsilsesquioxanes; Features of Periodic Networks and Magnetic Properties

A new family of bi-, tetra-, penta-, and hexanickel cagelike phenylsilsesquioxanes 1-6 was obtained by self-assembly and transmetalation procedures. Their crystal structures were established by single-crystal X-ray analysis, and features of crystal packing relevant to the network formation were studied by a topological analysis. Compounds 1, 2, and 4 are isolated architectures, while 3, 5, and 6 present extended 1D and 3D networks. The investigation of magnetic properties revealed the presence of ferro- (1 and 3-5) or antiferromagnetic (2 and 6) interactions between Ni(II) ions, giving rise in the most cases (1, 2, and 4-6) to the presence of a slow relaxation of the magnetization, which can originate from the spin frustration.

Stereoselective Alkane Oxidation with meta-Chloroperoxybenzoic Acid (MCPBA) Catalyzed by Organometallic Cobalt Complexes

Cobalt pi-complexes, previously described in the literature and specially synthesized and characterized in this work, were used as catalysts in homogeneous oxidation of organic compounds with peroxides. These complexes contain pi-butadienyl and pi-cyclopentadienyl ligands: [(tetramethylcyclobutadiene)(benzene)cobalt] hexafluorophosphate, [(C₄Me₄)Co(C₆H₆)]PF₆ (1); diiodo(carbonyl)(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)cobalt, Cp*Co(CO)I₂ (2); diiodo(carbonyl)(cyclopentadienyl)cobalt, CpCo(CO)I₂ (3); (tetramethylcyclobutadiene)(dicarbonyl)(iodo)cobalt, (C₄Me₄)Co(CO)₂I (4); [(tetramethylcyclobutadiene)(acetonitrile)(2,2′-bipyridyl)cobalt] hexafluorophosphate, [(C₄Me₄)Co(bipy)(MeCN)]PF₆ (5); bis[dicarbonyl(B-cyclohexylborole)]cobalt, [(C₄H₄BCy)Co(CO)₂]₂ (6); [(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)(iodo)(1,10-phenanthroline)cobalt] hexafluorophosphate, [Cp*Co(phen)I]PF₆ (7); diiodo(cyclopentadienyl)cobalt, [CpCoI₂]₂ (8); [(cyclopentadienyl)(iodo)(2,2′-bipyridyl)cobalt] hexafluorophosphate, [CpCo(bipy)I]PF₆ (9); and [(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)(iodo)(2,2′-bipyridyl)cobalt] hexafluorophosphate, [Cp*Co(bipy)I]PF₆ (10). Complexes 1 and 2 catalyze very efficient and stereoselective oxygenation of tertiary C–H bonds in isomeric dimethylcyclohexanes with MCBA: cyclohexanols are produced in 39 and 53% yields and with the trans/cis ratio (of isomers with mutual trans- or cis-configuration of two methyl groups) 0.05 and 0.06, respectively. Addition of nitric acid as co-catalyst dramatically enhances both the yield of oxygenates and stereoselectivity parameter. In contrast to compounds 1 and 2, complexes 9 and 10 turned out to be very poor catalysts (the yields of oxygenates in the reaction with cis-1,2-dimethylcyclohexane were only 5%–7% and trans/cis ratio 0.8 indicated that the oxidation is not stereoselective). The chromatograms of the reaction mixture obtained before and after reduction with PPh₃ are very similar, which testifies that alkyl hydroperoxides are not formed in this oxidation. It can be thus concluded that the interaction of the alkanes with MCPBA occurs without the formation of free radicals. The complexes catalyze oxidation of alcohols with tert-butylhydroperoxide (TBHP). For example, tert-BuOOH efficiently oxidizes 1-phenylethanol to acetophenone in 98% yield if compound 1 is used as a catalyst.

Cage-like Fe,Na-Germsesquioxanes: Structure, Magnetism, and Catalytic Activity

A series of four unprecedented heterometallic metallagermsesquioxanes were synthesized. Their cage-like architectures have a unique type of molecular topology consisting of the hexairon oxo {Fe₆ O₁₉ } core surrounded in a triangular manner by three cyclic germoxanolates [PhGe(O)O]₅ . This structural organization induces antiferromagnetic interactions between the Fe^III ions through the oxygen atoms. Evaluated for this first time in catalysis, these compounds showed a high catalytic activity in the oxidation of alkanes and the oxidative formation of benzamides from alcohols.
