Selective coordination of coinage metals using orthogonal ligand scaffolds

Group 11 metal complexes with their ability to form metallophilic interations are widely pursued to develop multifunctional luminescent materials. Heteronuclear coinage metal complexes are promising candidates to tune electronic and optical properties which are not readily accessed by their homometallic congeners. In this review, we present the concept of orthogonal ligands which are rationally designed to access heteronuclear coinage metal complexes and studied in terms of their photophysical properties. Bifunctional ligands containing soft and hard donor atoms have the potential of providing different coordination modes to selectively synthesise heterobimetallic complexes in a predictable manner. This review deals with ligand sets composed of pyridine, bipyridine- or iminopyridine-substituted NHCs featuring C-N coordination modes, phosphine-based N-heterocycles and amidinate ligand scaffolds comprising of P-N functionalities and mixed phosphine-phosphine oxide with P-O donor sites. Therefore, the scope of this perspective is the discussion of heteronuclear coinage metal complexes supported by recently developed bifunctional ligands in terms of their synthesis, coordination geometries and tunability of optical properties when compared to their homometallic analogues.

Interaction between Trinuclear Regium Complexes of Pyrazolate and Anions, a Computational Study

The geometry, energy and electron density properties of the 1:1, 1:2 and 1:3 complexes between cyclic (Py-M)3 (M = Au, Ag and Cu) and halide ions (F-, Cl- and Br-) were studied using Møller Plesset (MP2) computational methods. Three different configurations were explored. In two of them, the anions interact with the metal atoms in planar and apical dispositions, while in the last configuration, the anions interact with the CH(4) group of the pyrazole. The energetic results for the 1:2 and 1:3 complexes are a combination of the specific strength of the interaction plus a repulsive component due to the charge:charge coulombic term. However, stable minima structures with dissociation barriers for the anions indicate that those complexes are stable and (Py-M)3 can hold up to three anions simultaneously. A search in the CSD confirmed the presence of (Pyrazole-Cu)3 systems with two anions interacting in apical disposition.

Oligophosphine-thiocyanate Copper(I) and Silver(I) Complexes and Their Borane Derivatives Showing Delayed Fluorescence

The series of chelating phosphine ligands, which contain bidentate P² (bis[(2-diphenylphosphino)phenyl] ether, DPEphos; 4,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)-9,9-dimethylxanthene, Xantphos; 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)benzene, dppb), tridentate P³ (bis(2-diphenylphosphinophenyl)phenylphosphine), and tetradentate P⁴ (tris(2-diphenylphosphino)phenylphosphine) ligands, was used for the preparation of the corresponding dinuclear [M(μ₂-SCN)P²]₂ (M = Cu, 1, 3, 5; M = Ag, 2, 4, 6) and mononuclear [CuNCS(P³/P⁴)] (7, 9) and [AgSCN(P³/P⁴)] (8, 10) complexes. The reactions of P⁴ with silver salts in a 1:2 molar ratio produce tetranuclear clusters [Ag₂(μ₃-SCN)(t-SCN)(P⁴)]₂ (11) and [Ag₂(μ₃-SCN)(P⁴)]₂²⁺ (12). Complexes 7–11 bearing terminally coordinated SCN ligands were efficiently converted into derivatives 13–17 with the weakly coordinating ^–SCN:B(C₆F₅)₃ isothiocyanatoborate ligand. Compounds 1 and 5–17 exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) behavior in the solid state. The excited states of thiocyanate species are dominated by the ligand to ligand SCN → π(phosphine) charge transfer transitions mixed with a variable contribution of MLCT. The boronation of SCN groups changes the nature of both the S₁ and T₁ states to (L + M)LCT d,p(M, P) → π(phosphine). The localization of the excited states on the aromatic systems of the phosphine ligands determines a wide range of luminescence energies achieved for the title complexes (λ_em varies from 448 nm for 1 to 630 nm for 10c). The emission of compounds 10 and 15, based on the P⁴ ligand, strongly depends on the solid-state packing (λ_em = 505 and 625 nm for two crystalline forms of 15), which affects structural reorganizations accompanying the formation of electronically excited states.

Copper(I) and silver(I) thiocyanate complexes containing di-, tri-, and tetraphosphine ligands show efficient TADF in the solid state, dominated by the ligand to ligand SCN → π(phosphine) charge transfer, which is changed to d,p(M, P) → π(phosphine) transitions for the isothiocyanatoborate derivatives. The wide variation of the emission color from blue (448 nm) to red-orange (630 nm) is attributed to the nature of the P-donor ligands and the packing effects, influencing structural distortions in the excited state.

Near-unity thermally activated delayed fluorescence efficiency in three- and four-coordinate Au(i) complexes with diphosphine ligands

The synthesis and photoluminescence properties of three-coordinate Au(i) complexes with rigid diphosphine ligands LMe {1,2-bis[bis(2-methylphenyl)phosphino]benzene}, LEt {1,2-bis[bis(2-ethylphenyl)phosphino]benzene}, and LiPr {1,2-bis[bis(2-isopropylphenyl)phosphino]benzene} are investigated. The LMe and LEt ligands afford two types of complexes: dinuclear complexes [μ-LMe(AuCl)2] (1d) and [μ-LEt(AuCl)2] (2d) with an Au(i)-Au(i) bond and mononuclear three-coordinate Au(i) complexes LMeAuCl (1) and LEtAuCl (2). On the other hand, the bulkiest ligand, LiPr, affords three-coordinate Au(i) complexes, LiPrAuCl (3) and LiPrAuI (4), but no dinuclear complexes. X-ray analysis suggests that both 3 and 4 possess a highly distorted trigonal planar geometry. Moreover, luminescence data reveal that at room temperature, 3 and 4 exhibit yellow-green thermally activated delayed fluorescence in the crystalline state with maximum emission wavelengths at 558 and 549 nm, respectively. The emission yields are close to unity. Quantum chemical calculations suggest that the emission of 4 originates from the (σ + X) → π* excited state that possesses strong intraligand charge-transfer character. The luminescent properties of four-coordinate Au(i) complex (5) possessing a tetrahedral geometry are discussed on the basis of the emission spectra and decay times measured in a temperature range of 309-77 K.

Selective formation of a two-dimensional coordination polymer based on a tridentate phospholane ligand and gold(i)

The tridentate phosphine ligand 1,3,5-tris[(E)-(4-phospho-lano-2,6-diethyl)styryl]benzene reacts with [AuCl(tht)] independent of the stoichiometry employed with selective formation of a 2D coordination polymer (ratio 1 : 1) with gold(i) in a trigonal-planar [3 + 1] coordination geometry.

Catalytic Activity of Gold(I) Complexes with Hemilabile P,N Ligands

Two new cationic dinuclear gold(I) complexes, [Au₂ {μ(P,N)-5}₂ ]X₂ -in which X=NTf₂ (7; Tf=trifluoromethanesulfonate) or SbF₆ (8) and 2-(diphenylphosphanyl)benzonitrile (5) is a P,N-bridging donor-have been synthesized and structurally characterized. These air-stable species and their dimeric and polymeric analogues possessing 1'-(diphenylphosphanyl)-1-cyanoferrocene (1) as the bridging ligand, [Au₂ {μ(P,N)-1}₂ ](NTf₂ )₂ and [Au{μ(P,N)-1}]_n [SbF₆ ]_n , were used as precatalysts in various Au-mediated C-C and C-O bond-forming reactions. The reactivity of these complexes revealed the hemilabile nature of their P,N ligands. In the series of tested precatalysts, complex 8 exerted particularly high catalytic activity at low Au loading, even in reactions that usually require high amounts of gold catalyst to proceed efficiently under standard reaction conditions.

Photoluminescence properties of TADF-emitting three-coordinate silver(i) halide complexes with diphosphine ligands: a comparison study with copper(i) complexes

A series of three- and four-coordinate silver(i) halide complexes exhibiting efficient blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence have been prepared.
