Quenching and enhancement mechanisms of a novel Cd-based coordination polymer as a multiresponsive fluorescent sensor for nitrobenzene and aniline

BACKGROUND

Nitroaromatic compounds are inherently hazardous and explosive, so convenient and rapid detection strategies are needed for the sake of human health and the environment. There is an urgent demand for chemical sensing materials that offer high sensitivity, operational simplicity, and recognizability to effectively monitor nitroaromatic residues in industrial wastewater. Despite its importance, the mechanisms underlying fluorescence quenching or enhancement in fluorescent sensing materials have not been extensively researched. The design and synthesis of multiresponsive fluorescent sensing materials have been a great challenge until now.

RESULTS

In this study, a one-dimensional Cd-based fluorescent porous coordination polymer (Cd-CIP-1) was synthesized using 5-(4-cyanobenzyl)isophthalic acid (5-H2CIP) and 4,4'-bis(1-imidazolyl)biphenyl (4,4'-bimp) and used for the selective detection of nitrobenzene in aqueous solution by fluorescence quenching, with a limit of detection of 1.38 × 10-8 mol L-1. The presence of aniline in the Cd-CIP-1 solution leads to the enhancement of fluorescence property. Density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory calculations were carried out to elucidate the mechanisms of the fluorescence changes. This study revealed that the specific pore size of Cd-CIP-1 facilitates analyte screening and enhances host-guest electron coupling. Furthermore, π-π interactions and hydrogen bond between Cd-CIP-1 and the analytes result in intermolecular orbital overlap and thereby boosting electron transfer efficiency. The different electron flow directions in NB@Cd-CIP-1 and ANI@Cd-CIP-1 lead to fluorescence quenching and enhancement.

SIGNIFICANCE AND NOVELTY

The multiresponsive coordination polymer (Cd-CIP-1) can selectively detect nitrobenzene and recognize aniline in aqueous solutions. The mechanism of fluorescence quenching and enhancement has been thoroughly elucidated through a combination of density functional theory and experimental approaches. This study presents a promising strategy for the practical implementation of a multiresponsive fluorescent chemical sensor.

Fluorescent MOF and Its Gel Composite for the Fluorescence Recovery "Turn-On" Detection of Al3+ Ions and "Turn-Off" Detection of Oxo-Anions

The exploration of smart sensors is of great significance for the selectivity, sensitivity, and ability to show the low detection limit for the target analyte. Here, we have used the linker H2L (5-((anthracen-9-ylmethyl)amino)isophthalic acid) for the construction of {[Cd(L)(DMF)(H2O)2]·H2O}n (1) which is in order with the chromophore anthracene moiety and the free -NH functionality as a guest interaction site. This framework showed the luminescence recovery "turn-on" detection of the Al3+ ion in an aqueous solution. An exhaustive mechanism study disclosed that the Lewis acid-base-type interaction between the Al3+ ion and the -NH functionality of the linker in the framework revealed that the absorbance caused an enhancement for the "turn-on" sensing event. Besides the "turn-on" sensing event, the "turn-off" sensing phenomenon of 1 is also noticed when it detects the hazardous oxo-anions (MnO4- and CrO42-) with limit of detection values of 17.08 and 19.91 ppb, respectively. The detection of these diverse analytes are very fast (10 s) and they can also be recognized through a colorimetric response. The sensing mechanisms for these analytes are established by photoinduced electron transfer, Forster resonance energy transfer, and inert filter effect along with theoretical investigation. Furthermore, to show the sensing application of 1 in a versatile podium, a MOF gel composite, 1@AA (AA = Agar-Agar), was developed from 1 with AA. Interestingly, 1@AA showed the colorimetric detection of these analytes under UV light. Therefore, sensor 1 behaves as a smart sensory material for the recognition of the above analytes through a simultaneous "turn-on" and "turn-off" effect.

Two d10 2D Cathode-Ray Scintillation Coordination Polymers with High Efficiency and High-Voltage Stability

Two examples of efficient cathode-ray scintillation coordination polymers with good stability at high voltage were prepared by conjugating luminescent groups with d¹⁰ metal ions. The synergistic effect of inorganic metal and organic ligand suppresses the self-quenching of the conjugated luminescent groups and enhances the scintillation performance. This work provides new ideas for the design of new field-emission displays and cathode-ray scintillation materials.

Construction of multi-hydroxyl/ketone lanthanide metal–organic frameworks for understanding mechanochromic luminescence and high proton conductivity

[Zr16-BPDC-Eu1−xTbx] is the first type of lanthanide metal–organic framework with mechanochromic luminescence characteristics. [Zr16-Eu] shows extremely high proton conductivity due to the multi-hydroxyl/ketone functional group.

Photochromism and photoswitchable luminescence in a Zn7 cluster-based metal-organic framework with an organic guest

Photochromic materials coupled with photoswitchable luminescence functionalities are of particular interest due to their potential applications in switches and optical memory devices. However, the construction of such materials, especially those with two-color emission states, is still challenging. In this context, a rare Zn₇ cluster-based host-guest MOF material, (bbmp)[Zn₇(IPA)₆(OH)₄(H₂O)₂] (1) (H₂IPA = isophthalic acid, bbmp·2I = 4,4'-([1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-diyl)bis(1-methylpyridin-1-ium) diiodide), was prepared by encapsulating an organic cation into an anionic MOF produced from zinc cations and isophthalic acid ligands, which exhibits reversible naked detectable photochromic properties varying from yellow to green upon UV-Vis light irradiation. The photoactive guest bbmp²⁺ and the short O⋯N⁺ distances between the oxygen atoms of the carboxylate groups and the pyridine ring play a crucial role in the photochromism of this compound. More interestingly, the luminescence color of this cluster-based host-guest material can be reversibly switched from green to blue upon irradiation, exhibiting photoswitchable luminescence properties.

Metal-Organic Framework-Based Stimuli-Responsive Polymers

Metal-organic framework (MOF) based stimuli-responsive polymers (coordination polymers) exhibit reversible phase-transition behavior and demonstrate attractive properties that are capable of altering physical and/or chemical properties upon exposure to external stimuli, including pH, temperature, ions, etc., in a dynamic fashion. Thus, their conformational change can be imitated by the adsorption/desorption of target analytes (guest molecules), temperature or pressure changes, and electromagnetic field manipulation. MOF-based stimuli responsive polymers have received great attention due to their advanced optical properties and variety of applications. Herein, we summarized some recent progress on MOF-based stimuli-responsive polymers (SRPs) classified by physical and chemical responsiveness, including temperature, pressure, electricity, pH, metal ions, gases, alcohol and multi-targets.

Two isomeric zeolite-like metal–organic frameworks with mechanically responsive luminescence emission and gas adsorption properties

The two isomeric zeolite-like metal–organic frameworks based on tetrahedral TPO3− ligands and tetrahedrally connected Cd2+ ions were prepared. One of the compounds shows mechanic-responsive luminescence after the crystals were ground for different time.

An Unexpected 4,5-Diphenyl-2,7-naphthyridine Derivative with Aggregation-Induced Emission and Mechanofluorochromic Properties Obtained from a 3,5-Diphenyl-4H-pyran Derivative

For a specific fluorescent molecule, the increase of molecular conformation distortion is beneficial to endow it with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and mechanofluorochromic (MFC) properties. Herein, 3,5-diphenyl-4H-pyran derivative 5 and 4,5-diphenyl-2,7-naphthidine derivative 7 with highly twisted conformations were synthesized. For compound 5, although the introduction of phenyl rings with large steric hindrance at 3 and 5 positions of the 4H-pyran skeleton realized the transformation from aggregation-induced quenching (ACQ)-active molecule to AIE-active molecule, it only showed a low-contrast MFC activity. Compound 7 was accidentally obtained from compound 5 and n-butylamine via a ring-opening and subsequent intramolecular ring-closing mechanism. Compound 7 was confirmed to have a highly twisted molecular conformation by the crystal structural analysis and exhibited AIE activity originated from the restriction of intramolecular rotation. Furthermore, compound 7 exhibited reversible high-contrast MFC activity. Upon grinding, the change of solid-state fluorescence color from orange to yellow was confirmed to be due to the partial destruction of crystal structure. This work provides new ideas for the design and synthesis of novel AIE-active and MFC-active fluorescent molecules based on ACQ-active parent molecules.

Crystal structure and Hirshfeld surface analysis of 4-{[(anthracen-9-yl)meth-yl]amino}-benzoic acid di-methyl-formamide monosolvate

The title compound, C22H17NO2·C3H7NO, was synthesized by condensation of an aromatic aldehyde with a secondary amine and subsequent reduction. It was crystallized from a di-methyl-formamide solution as a monosolvate, C22H17NO2·C3H7NO. The aromatic mol-ecule is non-planar with a dihedral angle between the mean planes of the aniline moiety and the methyl anthracene moiety of 81.36 (8)°. The torsion angle of the Car-yl-CH2-NH-Car-yl backbone is 175.9 (2)°. The crystal structure exhibits a three-dimensional supra-molecular network, resulting from hydrogen-bonding inter-actions between the carb-oxy-lic OH group and the solvent O atom as well as between the amine functionality and the O atom of the carb-oxy-lic group and additional C-H⋯π inter-actions. Hirshfeld surface analysis was performed to qu-antify the inter-molecular inter-actions.

Naphthalimide-containing coordination polymer with mechanoresponsive luminescence and excellent metal ion sensing properties

Mechanoresponsive luminescent materials coupled with other functionalities are of particular interest due to their multiple external stimuli responsive properties. In this paper, a new sensitive mechanoresponsive luminescent coordination polymer, [Cd(INI)(DMF)2·DMF] (1) (H2INI = N-(5-isophthalic acid)-1,8-naphthalimide), has been successfully designed and synthesized. Complex 1 exhibits interesting mechanoresponsive and grinding-enhanced luminescence properties, and its luminescence colour changed from weak blue-green to bright blue upon grinding owing to the external pressure-induced destruction of ππ stacked arrangements in local defective areas. Moreover, the luminescence properties and uncoordinated carbonyl groups of well-ground g-1 endow it with excellent sensing ability for Cr3+ ions. This work will provide a new perspective to rationally design multifunctional coordination polymers that can serve as practical multi-responsive sensors to pressure and chemicals.

Copper(II), Zinc(II), and Cadmium(II) Formylbenzoate Complexes: Reactivity and Emission Properties

Synthesis, characterization, reactivity, and sensing properties of 4-formylbenzoate complexes of copper(II), zinc(II), and cadmium(II) possessing the 1,10-phenanthroline ancillary ligand are studied. The crystal structures of the (1,10-phenanthroline)bis(4-formylbenzoate)(aqua)copper(II) and (1,10-phenanthroline)bis(4-formylbenzo-ate)zinc(II) and a novel molecular complex comprising an assembly of mononuclear and dinuclear species of (1,10-phenanthroline)bis(4-formylbenzoate)cadmium(II) are reported. These zinc and cadmium complexes are fluorescent; they show differentiable sensitivity to detect three positional isomers of nitroaniline. The mechanism of sensing of nitroanilines by 1,10-phenanthroline and the complexes are studied by fluorescence titrations, photoluminescence decay, and dynamic light scattering. A plausible mechanism showing that 1,10-phenanthroline ligand-based emission quenched by electron transfer from the excited state of 1,10-phenanthroline to nitroaniline is supported by density functional theory calculations. In an anticipation to generate a fluorescent d¹⁰-copper(I) formylbenzoate complex by a mild reducing agent such as hydroxylamine hydrochloride for similar sensing of nitroaromatics as that of the d¹⁰-zinc and cadmium 4-formylbenzoate complexes, reactivity of d⁹-copper(II) with hydroxylamine hydrochloride in the presence of 4-formylbenzoic acid and 1,10-phenanthroline is studied. It did not provide the expected copper(I) complex but resulted in stoichiometry-dependent reactions of 4-formylbenzoic acid with hydroxylamine hydrochloride in the presence of copper(II) acetate and 1,10-phenanthroline. Depending on the stoichiometry of reactants, an inclusion complex of bis(1,10-phenanthroline)(chloro)copper(II) chloride with in situ-formed 4-((hydroxyimino)methyl)benzoic acid or copper(II) 4-(hydroxycarbamoyl)benzoate complex was formed. The self-assembly of the inclusion complex has the bis(1,10-phenanthroline)(chloro)copper(II) cation encapsulated in hydrogen-bonded chloride-hydrate assembly with 4-((hydroxyimino)methyl)benzoic acid.

Comprehensively understanding the steric hindrance effect on the coordination sphere of Pb2+ ions and photophysical nature of two luminescent Pb(ii)-coordination polymers

New luminescent Pb(ii)-coordination polymers (Pb(ii)-CPs), [Pb(2-anc)₂]_n (1) and [Pb(3-qlc)₂(H₂O)₂]_n (2) (2-anc = 2-aminonicotinate, 3-qlc = 3-quinolinecarboxylate), were synthesized by a solvothermal reaction and characterized using microanalysis, IR spectrometry and thermogravimetric analysis. Single crystal structure analysis revealed that the Pb²⁺ ion displays a hemi-directed coordination geometry in 1 and a holo-directed coordination geometry in 2. The difference between the coordination spheres of 1 and 2 is related to the steric hindrance effect of the ligands. A two-dimensional (2D) corrugated layer structure is formed in 1, and the neighboring layers are further extended into a three-dimensional (3D) van der Waals crystal by ππ interactions between the pyridyl rings in the neighboring layers. In contrast, a one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymeric chain is formed in 2, and the adjacent chains are connected in a 2D network by hydrogen bonds. The photophysical properties of 1 and 2 were studied at ambient conditions, disclosing that 1 emits phosphorescence at 548 nm with a millisecond-scale emission lifetime and an absolute quantum yield of 2.2%; 2 emits only blue fluorescence with an absolute quantum yield of 3.5% and nanosecond-scale emission lifetime. The reasons for the difference in the photophysical nature of 1 and 2 are discussed in regards to the electron band structure and density of states analysis.

Micro and Nano Smart Composite Films Based on Copper-Iodine Coordination Polymer as Thermochromic Biocompatible Sensors

Herein is presented the preparation and characterization of a composite material obtained by the combination of nanosheets of a coordination polymer (CP) based on the copper(I)-I double chain with response to temperature and pressure with polylactic acid (PLA) as biodegradable organic matrix. The new films of composite materials are generated using a simple and low-cost method and can be created with long lateral dimensions and thicknesses ranging from a few microns to a few nanometers. Studies show that the new material maintains the optical response versus the temperature, while the elasticity and flexibility of the PLA totally quenches the response to pressure previously observed for the CP. This new material can act as a reversible sensor at low temperatures, thanks to the flexibility of the copper(I)-iodine chain that conforms the CP. The addition of CP to the PLA matrix reduces the elastic modulus and ultimate elongation of the organic matrix, although it does not reduce its tensile strength.

Calcium-based efficient cathode-ray scintillating metal–organic frameworks constructed from π-conjugated luminescent motifs

π-Conjugated luminescent motifs that suffer from aggregation-caused quenching can respond well to ionizing cathode-rays after coordination with Ca(ii) ions.

Smart composite films of nanometric thickness based on copper-iodine coordination polymers. Toward sensors

One-pot reactions between CuI and methyl or methyl 2-amino-isonicotinate give rise to the formation of two coordination polymers (CPs) based on double zig-zag Cu2I2 chains. The presence of a NH2 group in the isonicotinate ligand produces different supramolecular interactions affecting the Cu-Cu distances and symmetry of the Cu2I2 chains. These structural variations significantly modulate their physical properties. Thus, both CPs are semiconductors and also show reversible thermo/mechanoluminescence. X-ray diffraction studies carried out under different temperature and pressure conditions in combination with theoretical calculations have been used to rationalize the multi-stimuli-responsive properties. Importantly, a bottom-up procedure based on fast precipitation leads to nanofibers of both CPs. The dimensions of these nanofibres enable the preparation of thermo/mechanochromic film composites with polyvinylidene difluoride. These films are tens of nanometers in thickness while being centimeters in length, representing smaller thicknesses so far reported for thin-film composites. This nanomaterial integration of CPs could represent a source of alternative nanomaterials for opto-electronic device fabrication.

Tunable Luminescent Heterometallic Zn2Ln2 Edge-Defective Molecular Cubane with Stimuli-Responsive Properties

Heterometallic Zn₂Ln₂ [Ln = Gd (1), Eu (2), Tb (3), Dy (4)] discrete molecules with edge-defective cubane structure are assembled from a multifunctional fluorescent conjugate ligand and Ln^III/Zn^II mixed-metal ions; they exhibit the tunable luminescence, including ligand-based yellow-green light emission for 1 and 4 and lanthanide-center emission for 2 and 3. The multiple stimuli-responsive photoluminescences were investigated to show a two-step thermal-responsive luminescence increase in the intensity upon cooling and piezochromic luminescence.

Pyrene–fluorescein-based colour-tunable AIE-active hybrid fluorophore material for potential live cell imaging applications

A novel hybrid fluorophore (FHPY) has been synthesized based on two standard fluorescent hydrophobic–hydrophilic molecules, viz. pyrene and fluorescein, with an objective to tune the AIE along with the morphology and live cell imaging.

Reversible mechanochromic and thermochromic luminescence switching via hydrogen-bond-directed assemblies in a zinc coordination complex

A zinc coordination complex with terpyridyl derivative as ligand exhibits mechanochromic and thermochromic luminescence behaviors with reversible color changes visible to the naked eye from pink to blue-purple upon mechanical grinding and from pink to blue upon heating.

Two tetraphenylethene-containing coordination polymers for reversible mechanochromism
