Bis-Ortho-Donor-Modification of Boracyclic π-Electron Systems beyond Steric Protection to Produce Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Materials

Polycyclic π-conjugated compounds that contain tricoordinate boron atoms at their periphery represent an attractive class of materials with electron-accepting character. Their molecular design generally requires the introduction of a bulky aryl group onto the boron atom, where it provides predominantly kinetic stabilization. The addition of extra functionality to the aryl group on the boron atom can be expected to further expand the potential utility of this class of materials. Herein, we report the synthesis of a series of boracyclic π-conjugated molecules with firm ortho B⋅⋅⋅N nonbonding interactions by introducing N-containing electron-donors at the ortho-positions of the aryl group on the boron atom. X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that the combination of a planar boracyclic π-skeleton with only sp2 carbons and a strong electron-donating phenothiazine moiety results in a particularly short B⋅⋅⋅N distance. Theoretical study provided insights into the inherent nature of the B⋅⋅⋅N interaction. Owing to their donor-acceptor (D-A) structures, these molecules exhibit substantially red-shifted fluorescence in solution, albeit that the fluorescence quantum yields (ΦF) are low. In contrast, when incorporated into films, these compounds exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) with improved ΦF values. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) fabricated using the ortho-donor-substituted derivatives exhibit orange-red electroluminescence.

Catalytic, Z-Selective, Semi-Hydrogenation of Alkynes with a Zinc-Anilide Complex

The reversible activation of dihydrogen with a molecular zinc anilide complex is reported. The mechanism of this reaction has been probed through stoichiometric experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The combined evidence suggests that H₂ activation occurs by addition across the Zn-N bond via a four-membered transition state in which the Zn and N atoms play a dual role of Lewis acid and Lewis base. The zinc hydride complex that results from H₂ addition has been shown to be remarkably effective for the hydrozincation of C═C bonds at modest temperatures. The scope of hydrozincation includes alkynes, alkenes, and a 1,3-butadiyne. For alkynes, the hydrozincation step is stereospecific leading exclusively to the syn-isomer. Competition experiments show that the hydrozincation of alkynes is faster than the equivalent alkene substrates. These new discoveries have been used to develop a catalytic system for the semi-hydrogenation of alkynes. The catalytic scope includes both aryl- and alkyl-substituted internal alkynes and proceeds with high alkene: alkane, Z:E ratios, and modest functional group tolerance. This work offers a first example of selective hydrogenation catalysis using zinc complexes.

ortho-Phenylene-bridged phosphorus/silicon Lewis pairs

A series of five ortho-phenylene-bridged phosphorus-silicon Lewis pairs was synthesized, with phosphorus bearing isopropyl groups while the substituents at the silicon atom vary (-CH₃, -Cl, -F). Possible interactions between Lewis acid and base were investigated both experimentally (NMR, XRD) and theoretically to determine the influence of the different substituents. Calculated ortho-interaction energies (OIEs) show a stabilizing interactions between the acidic and basic units which were also found for the meta- and para-interaction energies (MIEs and PIEs, respectively), indicating stabilization resulting not from direct acid-base interaction but from electronic interactions through the ring. Further spectroscopic (NMR, XRD) and theoretical (NBO, QTAIM, SAPT) investigations confirmed the absence of direct interactions between silicon and phoshorus.

Water Reduction and Dihydrogen Addition in Aqueous Conditions With ansa-Phosphinoborane

Ortho-phenylene-bridged phosphinoborane (2,6-Cl₂ Ph)₂ B-C₆ H₄ -PCy₂ 1 was synthesized in three steps from commercially available starting materials. 1 reacts with H₂ or H₂ O under mild conditions to form corresponding zwitterionic phosphonium borates 1-H₂ or 1-H₂ O. NMR studies revealed both reactions to be remarkably reversible. Thus, when exposed to H₂ , 1-H₂ O partially converts to 1-H₂ even in the presence of multiple equivalents of water in the solution. The addition of parahydrogen to 1 leads to nuclear spin hyperpolarization both in dry and hydrous solvents, confirming the dissociation of 1-H₂ O to free 1. These observations were supported by computational studies indicating that the formation of 1-H₂ and 1-H₂ O from 1 are thermodynamically favored. Unexpectedly, 1-H₂ O can release molecular hydrogen to form phosphine oxide 1-O. Kinetic, mechanistic, and computational (DFT) studies were used to elucidate the unique "umpolung" water reduction mechanism.

Magnesium Pincer Complexes and Their Applications in Catalytic Semihydrogenation of Alkynes and Hydrogenation of Alkenes: Evidence for Metal-Ligand Cooperation

The development of catalysts for environmentally benign organic transformations is a very active area of research. Most of the catalysts reported so far are based on transition-metal complexes. In recent years, examples of catalysis by main-group metal compounds have been reported. Herein, we report a series of magnesium pincer complexes, which were characterized by NMR and X-ray single-crystal diffraction. Reversible activation of H₂ via aromatization/dearomatization metal-ligand cooperation was studied. Utilizing the obtained complexes, the unprecedented homogeneous main-group metal catalyzed semihydrogenation of alkynes and hydrogenation of alkenes were demonstrated under base-free conditions, affording Z-alkenes and alkanes as products, respectively, with excellent yields and selectivities. Control experiments and DFT studies reveal the involvement of metal-ligand cooperation in the hydrogenation reactions. This study not only provides a new approach for the semihydrogenation of alkynes and hydrogenation of alkenes catalyzed by magnesium but also offers opportunities for the hydrogenation of other compounds catalyzed by main-group metal complexes.

Controlling the Lewis Acidity and Polymerizing Effectively Prevent Frustrated Lewis Pairs from Deactivation in the Hydrogenation of Terminal Alkynes

Two strategies were reported to prevent the deactivation of Frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) in the hydrogenation of terminal alkynes: reducing the Lewis acidity and polymerizing the Lewis acid. A polymeric Lewis acid (P-BPh₃) with high stability was designed and synthesized. Excellent conversion (up to 99%) and selectivity can be achieved in the hydrogenation of terminal alkynes catalyzed by P-BPh₃. This catalytic system works quite well for different substrates. In addition, the P-BPh₃ can be easily recycled.

Metal-Free C-H Borylation of N-Heteroarenes by Boron Trifluoride

Organoboron compounds are essential reagents in modern C-C coupling reactions. Their synthesis via catalytic C-H borylation by main group elements is emerging as a powerful tool alternative to transition metal based catalysis. Herein, a straightforward metal-free synthesis of aryldifluoroboranes from BF3 and heteroarenes is reported. The reaction is assisted by sterically hindered amines and catalytic amounts of thioureas. According to computational studies the reaction proceeds via frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) mechanism. The obtained aryldifluoroboranes are further stabilized against destructive protodeborylation by converting them to the corresponding air stable tetramethylammonium organotrifluoroborates.

Heterolytic Scission of Hydrogen Within a Crystalline Frustrated Lewis Pair

We report the heterolysis of molecular hydrogen under ambient conditions by the crystalline frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) 1-{2-[bis(pentafluorophenyl)boryl]phenyl}-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine (KCAT). The gas-solid reaction provides an approach to prepare the solvent-free, polycrystalline ion pair KCATH2 through a single crystal to single crystal transformation. The crystal lattice of KCATH2 increases in size relative to the parent KCAT by approximately 2%. Microscopy was used to follow the transformation of the highly colored red/orange KCAT to the colorless KCATH2 over a period of 2 h at 300 K under a flow of H₂ gas. There is no evidence of crystal decrepitation during hydrogen uptake. Inelastic neutron scattering employed over a temperature range from 4-200 K did not provide evidence for the formation of polarized H₂ in a precursor complex within the crystal at low temperatures and high pressures. However, at 300 K, the INS spectrum of KCAT transformed to the INS spectrum of KCATH2. Calculations suggest that the driving force is more favorable in the solid state compared to the solution or gas phase, but the addition of H₂ into the KCAT crystal is unfavorable. Ab Initio methods were used to calculate the INS spectra of KCAT, KCATH2, and a possible precursor complex of H₂ in the pocket between the B and N of crystalline KCAT. Ex-situ NMR showed that the transformation from KCAT to KCATH2 is quantitative and our results suggest that the hydrogen heterolysis process occurs via H₂ diffusion into the FLP crystal with a rate-limiting movement of H₂ from inactive positions to reactive sites.

The crystal structure and Hirshfeld surface analysis of 1-(2,5-di-meth-oxy-phen-yl)-2,2,6,6-tetra-methyl-piperidine

In the title compound, C17H27NO2, the piperidine ring has a chair conformation and is positioned normal to the benzene ring. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked by C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming chains propagating along the c-axis direction.

FLP catalysis: main group hydrogenations of organic unsaturated substrates

This article is focused on recent developments in main group mediated hydrogenation chemistry and catalysis using "frustrated Lewis pairs" (FLPs). The broading range of substrates and catalyst systems is reviewed and the advances in catalytic reductions and the development of stereoselective, asymmetric reductions made since 2012 is considered.

Formation of Reactive π-Conjugated Frustrated N/B Pairs by Borane-Induced Propargyl Amine Rearrangement

N-Propargyltetramethylpiperidine reacts with a series of trans-alkenyl-B(C₆F₅)₂ compounds to give the substituted alkenyl-bridged frustrated N/B Lewis pairs 5. Their structures and spectroscopic features indicate a pronounced participation of the mesomeric s-trans-iminium/borata-alkene resonance form. The compounds are thought to be formed in a stepwise addition/rearrangement process which is initiated by a trans-1,2-amine/borane FLP addition to the carbon-carbon triple bond to generate a reactive zwitterionic aziridinium/alkenylborate intermediate. Subsequent alkenylborate attack leads to opening of the activated three-membered heterocycle with clean formation of the products 5a-c. Treatment of the propargyl-TMP substrate with B(C₆F₅)₃ gave a stable example of such an aziridinium/borate betaine, which was isolated and amply characterized. The products 5a-c are active N/B FLPs. They split dihydrogen heterolytically under mild conditions to give the respective NH⁺/BH^- products 9a-c. These contain Z-configurated core C═C double bonds, which indicates rotational equilibration around the central C-C bond of 5a-c during this reaction. Structural and chemical features of the 5c system were analyzed by DFT calculations.

Metal-Free Borylation of Heteroarenes Using Ambiphilic Aminoboranes: On the Importance of Sterics in Frustrated Lewis Pair C-H Bond Activation

Two novel frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) aminoboranes, (1-Pip-2-BH₂-C₆H₄)₂ (2; Pip = piperidyl) and (1-NEt₂-2-BH₂-C₆H₄)₂ (3; NEt₂ = diethylamino), were synthesized, and their structural features were elucidated both in solution and in the solid state. The reactivity of these species for the borylation of heteroarenes was investigated and compared to previously reported (1-TMP-2-BH₂-C₆H₄)₂ (1; TMP = tetramethylpiperidyl) and (1-NMe₂-2-BH₂-C₆H₄)₂ (4; NMe₂ = dimethylamino). It was shown that 2 and 3 are more active catalysts for the borylation of heteroarenes than the bulkier analogue 1. Kinetic studies and density functional theory calculations were performed with 1 and 2 to ascertain the influence of the amino group of this FLP-catalyzed transformation. The C-H activation step was found to be more facile with smaller amines at the expense of a more difficult dissociation of the dimeric species. The bench-stable fluoroborate salts of all catalysts (1F-4F) have been synthesized and tested for the borylation reaction. The new precatalysts 2F and 3F are showing higher reaction rates and yields for multigram-scale syntheses.
