Self-Assembly and Aggregation-Induced Emission in Aqueous Media of Responsive Luminescent Copper(I) Coordination Polymer Nanoparticles

Luminescent copper(I)-based compounds have recently attracted much attention since they can reach very high emission quantum yields. Interestingly, Cu(I) clusters can also be emissive, and the extension from small molecules to larger architecture could represent the first step towards novel materials that could be obtained by programming the units to undergo self-assembly. However, for Cu(I) compounds the formation of supramolecular systems is challenging due to the coordinative diversity of copper centers. This works shows that this diversity can be exploited in the construction of responsive systems. In detail, the changes in the emissive profile of different aggregates formed in water by phosphine-thioether copper(I) derivatives were followed. Our results demonstrate that the self-assembly and disassembly of Cu(I)-based coordination polymeric nanoparticles (CPNs) is sensitive to solvent composition. The solvent-induced changes are related to modifications in the coordination sphere of copper at the molecular level, which alters not only the emission profile but also the morphology of the aggregates. Our findings are expected to inspire the construction of smart supramolecular systems based on dynamic coordinative metal centers.

Keep it tight: a crucial role of bridging phosphine ligands in the design and optical properties of multinuclear coinage metal complexes

Copper subgroup metal ions in the +1 oxidation state are classical candidates for aggregation via non-covalent metal-metal interactions, which are supported by a number of bridging ligands. The bridging phosphines, soft donors with a relatively labile coordination to coinage metals, serve as convenient and essential components of the ligand environment that allow for efficient self-assembly of discrete polynuclear aggregates. Simultaneously, accessible and rich modification of the organic spacer of such P-donors has been used to generate many fascinating structures with attractive photoluminescent behavior. In this work we consider the development of di- and polynuclear complexes of M(i) (M = Cu, Ag, Au) and their photophysical properties, focusing on the effect of phosphine bridging ligands, their flexibility and denticity.

Tunable from Blue to Red Emissive Composites and Solids of Silver Diphosphane Systems with Higher Quantum Yields than the Diphosphane Ligands

PMMA composites and solids of complexes of formulas [AgX(P-P)]_n [n = 1 and 2; X = Cl, NO₃, ClO₄, CF₃COO, and OTf; P-P = dppb, xantphos, (PR₂)₂C₂B₁₀H₁₀ (R = Ph and ⁱPr)] display the whole palette of colors from blue to red upon selection of the anionic ligand (X) and the diphosphane (P-P). The diphosphane seems to play the most important role in tuning the emission energy and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) behavior. The PMMA composites of the complexes exhibit higher quantum yields than that of the diphosphane ligands and those with dppb are between 28 and 53%. Remarkably, instead of blue-green emissions which dominate the luminescence of silver diphosphane complexes in rigid phases, those with carborane diphosphanes are yellow-orange or orange-red emitters. Theoretical studies have been carried out for complexes with P-P = dppb, X = Cl; P-P = dppic, X = NO₃; P-P = dppcc, X = Cl, NO₃, and OTf and the mononuclear complexes [AgX(xantphos)] (X = Cl, Br). Optimization of the first excited triplet state was only possible for [AgX(xantphos)] (X = Cl and Br). A mixed MLCT and MC nature could be attributed to the S₀ → T₁ transition in these three-coordinated complexes.

New Lamellar Silver Thiolate Coordination Polymers with Tunable Photoluminescence Energies by Metal Substitution

The structures of two lamellar silver thiolate coordination polymers [Ag( p-SPhCO₂H)] _n (1) and [Ag( p-SPhCO₂Me)] _n (2) are described for the first time. Their inorganic part is composed of distorted Ag₃S₃ honeycomb networks separated by noninterpenetrated thiolate ligands. The main difference between the two compounds arises from dimeric hydrogen bonds present for the carboxylic acids. Indepth photophysical studies show that the silver thiolates exhibit multiemission properties, implying luminescence thermochromism. More interestingly, the synthesis of a heterometallic lamellar compound, [Ag_0.85Cu_0.15( p-SPhCO₂H)] _n (3), allows to obtain mixed metal thiolate coordination polymers and to tune the photophysical properties with the excitation wavelengths from a green vibronic luminescence to a single red emission band.

Aurophilicity vs. thiophilicity: directing the crystalline supramolecular arrangement in luminescent gold compounds

The fluorination of thiolate ligands is applied as a tool that allows control of the prevalence of thiophilic (Au–S) interactions over the expected aurophilic contacts in luminescent gold compounds.

π-Backbonding and non-covalent interactions in the JohnPhos and polyfluorothiolate complexes of gold(i)

We studied the influence of changing the degree of fluorination in eight new gold(i) derivatives containing both JohnPhos phosphine and polyfluorinated thiolates: [Au(SR_F)(JPhos)], JPhos = P(C₆H₄-C₆H₅)(t-But)₂ and R_F = C₆F₅ (1), C₆HF₄ (2), C₆H₃F₂-3,5 (3), C₆H₃F₂-2,4 (4), C₆H₄F-2 (5), C₆H₄F-3 (6), C₆H₄F-4 (7) and CF₃ (8). We determined the molecular and crystal structures of all new compounds by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Later, we characterised the chemical bonding scenario with quantum chemical topology tools, specifically the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) and the analysis of the NCI-index. Our QTAIM results indicate that while the linear S-Au-P moiety is unaffected by the variation of the fluorine content on the thiolates and that Au-S and Au-P bond strengths are mostly constant for all compounds in the series, the π character of gold bonds seems to be modified by the fluorination of the substituents at the thiolate ligand. Besides, the examination of the NCI-index reveals the presence of weak Au-π_Phenyl non-covalent interactions in all compounds. Overall, this study shows the relevance of (i) the π-backbonding properties of the metal centre and (ii) different non-covalent interactions in the stability of JohnPhos gold(i) compounds.
