Recent Advances in Heterogeneous Catalytic Systems Containing Metal Ions for Phosphate Ester Hydrolysis

Organophosphates are a class of organic compounds that are important for living organisms, forming the building blocks for DNA, RNA, and some essential cofactors. Furthermore, non-natural organophosphates are widely used in industrial applications, including as pesticides; in laundry detergents; and, unfortunately, as chemical weapons agents. In some cases, the natural degradation of organophosphates can take thousands of years; this longevity creates problems associated with handling and the storage of waste generated by such phosphate esters, in particular. Efforts to develop new catalysts for the cleavage of phosphate esters have progressed in recent decades, mainly in the area of homogeneous catalysis. In contrast, the development of heterogeneous catalysts for the hydrolysis of organophosphates has not been as prominent. Herein, examples of heterogeneous systems are described and the importance of the development of heterogeneous catalysts applicable to organophosphate hydrolysis is highlighted, shedding light on recent advances related to different solid matrices that have been employed.

Structural divergence in binuclear Cu(ii) pyridoxal Schiff base complexes probed by co-ligands: catecholase mimetic activity and sulphide ion sensing

Three Cu(ii) complexes showing efficient catecholase activity, with pronounced solvent sensitivity, S²⁻sensing ability in micromolar concentrations, and coligand dependent denticity of the pyridoxal Schiff base ligand are reported.

Sequential Fluorescence Recognition of Molybdenum(VI), Arsenite, and Phosphate Ions in a Ratiometric Manner: A Facile Approach for Discrimination of AsO2 - and H2PO4. ACS OMEGA 2019;4:10877-10890. [PMID: 31460185 PMCID: PMC6648501 DOI: 10.1021/acsomega.9b00377]

An amide-based smart probe (L) is explored for nanomolar detection of Mo(VI) ion in a ratiometric manner, involving hydrogen-bond-assisted chelation-enhanced fluorescence process through inhibition of photoinduced electron transfer process. The recognition of Mo(VI) is associated with a 17-fold fluorescence enhancement and confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction of the resulting Mo(VI) complex (M1). Further, M1 selectively recognizes arsenite through green emission of their adduct (C1) with an 81-fold fluorescence enhancement. Interestingly, dihydrogen phosphate causes dissociation of C1 back to free L having weak fluorescence. The methods are fast, highly selective, and allow their bare eye visualization at physiological pH. All of the interactions have been substantiated by time-dependent density functional theory calculations to rationalize their spectroscopic properties. The corresponding lowest detection limits are 1.5 × 10-8 M for Mo(VI), 1.2 × 10-10 M for AsO2 -, and 3.2 × 10-6 M for H2PO4 -, whereas the respective association constants are 4.21 × 105 M-1 for Mo(VI), 6.49 × 104 M-1 for AsO2 -, and 2.11 × 105 M-1 for H2PO4 -. The L is useful for efficient enrichment of Mo(VI) from aqueous solution, while M1 efficiently removes AsO2 - from environmental samples by solid-phase extraction.

Metal-Ion Displacement Approach for Optical Recognition of Thorium: Application of a Molybdenum(VI) Complex for Nanomolar Determination and Enrichment of Th(IV)

An azine-based molybdenum (Mo(VI)) complex (M1) is exploited for selective detection of thorium (Th(IV)) ions through a metal-ion displacement protocol. Th(IV) displaces Mo(VI) from M1 instantly leading to the formation of the Th(IV) complex, having orange-red emission. Consequently, a red shift of the emission wavelength along with 41-fold fluorescence enhancement is observed. This unique method allows detection of Th(IV) as low as 1.5 × 10^-9 M. The displacement of Mo(VI) from M1 by Th(IV) is established by spectroscopic studies and kinetically followed by the stopped-flow technique. The displacement binding constant for Th(IV) is notably strong, 4.59 × 10⁶ M^-1. Extraction of Th(IV) from aqueous solution to the ethyl acetate medium using M1 has been achieved. The silica-immobilized M1 efficiently enriches Th(IV) from its reservoir through solid-phase extraction. Computational studies (density functional theory) support experimental findings.

Synthesis, Magnetic Properties, and Catalytic Properties of a Nickel(II)-Dependent Biomimetic of Metallohydrolases

A dinickel(II) complex of the ligand 1,3-bis(bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)propan-2-ol (HL1) has been prepared and characterized to generate a functional model for nickel(II) phosphoesterase enzymes. The complex, [Ni2(L1)(μ-OAc)(H2O)2](ClO4)2·H2O, was characterized by microanalysis, X-ray crystallography, UV-visible, and IR absorption spectroscopy and solid state magnetic susceptibility measurements. Susceptibility studies show that the complex is antiferromagnetically coupled with the best fit parameters J = -27.4 cm-1, g = 2.29, D = 28.4 cm-1, comparable to corresponding values measured for the analogous dicobalt(II) complex [Co2(L1)(μ-OAc)](ClO4)2·0.5 H2O (J = -14.9 cm-1 and g = 2.16). Catalytic measurements with the diNi(II) complex using the substrate bis(2,4-dinitrophenyl)phosphate (BDNPP) demonstrated activity toward hydrolysis of the phosphoester substrate with K m ~10 mM, and k cat ~0.025 s-1. The combination of structural and catalytic studies suggests that the likely mechanism involves a nucleophilic attack on the substrate by a terminal nucleophilic hydroxido moiety.

Facile Fabrication of Ordered Component-Tunable Heterobimetallic Self-Assembly Nanosheet for Catalyzing "Click" Reaction

How to maximize the number of desirable active sites on the surface of the catalyst and minimize the number of sites promoting undesirable side reactions is currently an important research topic. In this study, a new way based on the synergism to achieve the successful fabrication of an ordered heterobimetallic self-assembled monolayer (denoted as BMSAM) with a controlled composition and an excellent orientation of metals in the monolayer was developed. BMSAM consisting of phenanthroline and Schiff-base groups was prepared, and its novel heterobimetallic (Cu and Pd) self-assembled monolayer anchored in silicon (denoted as Si-Fmp-Cu-Pd BMSAM) with a controlled composition and a fixed position was fabricated and characterized by UV, cyclic voltammetry, Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), and water-drop contact angle (WDCA) analyses. The effects of Si-Fmp-Cu-Pd BMSAM on its catalytic properties were also systematically investigated using "click" reaction as a template by WDCA, XPS, SEM, XRD, ICP-AES and in situ Fourier transform infrared analyses in a heterogeneous system. The results showed that the excellent catalytic characteristic could be attributed to the partial (ordered or proper distance) isolation of active sites displaying high densities of specific atomic ensembles. The catalytic reaction mechanism of the click reaction interpreted that the catalytic process mainly occurred on the surface of the monolayer, internal active site (Pd) and rationalized that the Cu(I) species and Pd(0) reduced from the Cu(II) and Pd(II) catalyst were active species, which had a proper distance between two different metals. The cuprate-triazole intermediate and the palladium intermediate, whose production is the key step, should lie in a proper position between the copper and active palladium sites, with which the reaction rate of transmetalation would be improved to increase the amount of the undesired Sonogashira coupling product.
