A comparative study of titanium complexes bearing 2-(arylideneamino)phenolates and 2-((arylimino)methyl)phenolates as catalysts for ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone and L-lactide

Titanium complexes bearing 2-(arylideneamino)phenolates and 2-((arylimino)methyl)phenolates were synthesized, and their catalytic activities in the polymerization of ε-caprolactone and L-lactide were studied. Among five-membered ring Ti complexes bearing 2-(arylideneamino)phenolates, FCl-Ti exhibited the highest level of catalytic activity ([CL] : [FCl-Ti] = 100 : 1, where [CL] = 2 M, and conv. = 86% at 60 °C after 9 h). For six-membered ring Ti complexes bearing 2-((arylimino)methyl)phenolates, SCl-Ti exhibited the highest level of catalytic activity ([CL] : [SCl-Ti] = 100 : 1, where [CL] = 2 M, and conv. = 88% at 60 °C after 118 h). The five-membered ring Ti complexes bearing 2-(arylideneamino)phenolates exhibited a higher level of catalytic activity (6.1-12.8 fold for the polymerization of ε-caprolactone and 6.2-23.0 fold for the polymerization of L-lactide) than the six-membered ring Ti complexes bearing 2-((arylimino)methyl)phenolates. The density functional theory (DFT) results revealed that the free energy of the first transition state FH-Ti-TS1 is 36.49 kcal mol-1 which is lower than that of SH-Ti-TS1 (46.58 kcal mol-1), which was ascribed to the fact that the Ti-Nim bond (2.742 Å) of FH-Ti-TS1 is longer than that of SH-Ti-TS1 (2.229 Å) and reduces the repulsion between ligands.

Recent Advances in the Titanium-Based Catalysts for Ring-Opening Polymerization

At present, economic development and daily life cannot be separated from organic synthetic polymers. However, a large number of nondegradable polymers have caused serious pollution to the environment. It is necessary for sustainable development to use biodegradable materials instead of traditional polymers, but it is not yet comparable in performance and cost to the competitor it will replace. Therefore, there is a long way to go to develop effective synthesis methods. Through ring-opening polymerization, some cyclic monomers, such as ε-caprolactone or lactide, can be synthesized into biodegradable polymers, which can not only replace traditional synthetic polymers in some fields but also have applications in drug delivery, surgical consumables, human implant materials, bone materials, etc. Ring-opening polymerization is a potential candidate for solving environmental pollution. For ring-opening polymerization, catalysts are very important, among which titanium catalysts have attracted much attention because of their high efficiency, economy, and nontoxicity. In this paper, the development status of organotitanium compounds as ring-opening polymerization catalysts is reviewed, including the effects of different ligand structures on polymerization behavior and polymer structure, and its development trend is prospected. We hope that this review will be helpful for developing efficient ring-opening polymerization catalysts.

Magnetically Actuated Trigger Transient Soft Actuators Comprising On-Demand Photo-Initiated and Thermo-Degradable Polypropylene Carbonate-Photo-Acid Generator

Lifetime-reconfigurable soft robots have emerged as a new class of robots, emphasizing the unmet needs of futuristic sustainability and security. Trigger-transient materials that can both actuate and degrade on-demand are crucial for achieving life-reconfigurable soft robots. Here, we propose the use of transient and magnetically actuating materials that can decompose under ultraviolet light and heat, achieved by adding photo-acid generator (PAG) and magnetic particles (Sr-ferrite) to poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC). Chemical and thermal analyses reveal that the mechanism of PPC-PAG decomposition occurs through PPC backbone cleavage by the photo-induced acid. The self-assembled monolayer (SAM) encapsulation of Sr-ferrite preventing the interaction with the PAG allowed the transience of magnetic soft actuators. We demonstrate remotely controllable and degradable magnetic soft kirigami actuators using blocks with various magnetized directions. This study proposes novel approaches for fabricating lifetime-configurable magnetic soft actuators applicable to diverse environments and applications, such as enclosed/sealed spaces and security/military devices.

Homoleptic titanium and zirconium complexes exhibiting unusual Oiminol–metal coordination: application in stereoselective ring-opening polymerization of lactide

The synthesis and characterization of novel homoleptic Ti and Zr complexes with tridentate ONO-type Schiff base ligands and their catalytic activities towards the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactide are reported.

Rare-Earth Metal Complexes Supported by Polydentate Phenoxy-Type Ligand Platforms: C-H Activation Reactivity and CO2/Epoxide Copolymerization Catalysis

Mono- and dinuclear group 3 metal complexes incorporating polydentate bis(imino)phenoxy {N²O}^- and bis(amido)phenoxy {N²O}^3- ligands were synthesized by alkane elimination reactions from the tris(alkyl) M(CH₂SiMe₃)₃(THF)₂ and M(CH₂C₆H₄-o-NMe₂)₃ (M = Sc, Y) precursors. Complex 1a-Y was used for the selective C-H activation of 2-phenylpyridine at the 2'-phenyl position affording the corresponding bis(aryl) product 3a-Y, which was found to be reacted reluctantly with weak electrophiles (styrene, imines, hydrosilanes). The mechanism of formation of 3a-Y was established by DFT calculations, which also corroborated high stability of the complex toward insertion of styrene, apparently stemming from the inability to form the corresponding adduct. Copolymerization of cyclohexene oxide and CO₂ promoted by 1a-Y (0.1-0.5 mol %) was demonstrated to proceed under mild conditions (toluene, 70 °C, P_CO2 = 12 bar) giving polycarbonates with high efficiency (maximal TON of 460) and selectivity (97-99% of carbonate units).

Ekeli J, Gillis-D’Hamers F, Törnroos KW, Jensen VR, Le Roux E. Unsaturated and Benzannulated N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complexes of Titanium and Hafnium: Impact on Catalysts Structure and Performance in Copolymerization of Cyclohexene Oxide with CO2

Tridentate, bis-phenolate N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are among the ligands giving the most selective and active group 4-based catalysts for the copolymerization of cyclohexene oxide (CHO) with CO2. In particular, ligands based on imidazolidin-2-ylidene (saturated NHC) moieties have given catalysts which exclusively form polycarbonate in moderate-to-high yields even under low CO2 pressure and at low copolymerization temperatures. Here, to evaluate the influence of the NHC moiety on the molecular structure of the catalyst and its performance in copolymerization, we extend this chemistry by synthesizing and characterizing titanium complexes bearing tridentate bis-phenolate imidazol-2-ylidene (unsaturated NHC) and benzimidazol-2-ylidene (benzannulated NHC) ligands. The electronic properties of the ligands and the nature of their bonds to titanium are studied using density functional theory (DFT) and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis. The metal-NHC bond distances and bond strengths are governed by ligand-to-metal σ- and π-donation, whereas back-donation directly from the metal to the NHC ligand seems to be less important. The NHC π-acceptor orbitals are still involved in bonding, as they interact with THF and isopropoxide oxygen lone-pair donor orbitals. The new complexes are, when combined with [PPN]Cl co-catalyst, selective in polycarbonate formation. The highest activity, albeit lower than that of the previously reported Ti catalysts based on saturated NHC, was obtained with the benzannulated NHC-Ti catalyst. Attempts to synthesize unsaturated and benzannulated NHC analogues based on Hf invariably led, as in earlier work with Zr, to a mixture of products that include zwitterionic and homoleptic complexes. However, the benzannulated NHC-Hf complexes were obtained as the major products, allowing for isolation. Although these complexes selectively form polycarbonate, their catalytic performance is inferior to that of analogues based on saturated NHC.

NNC-Scorpionate Zirconium-Based Bicomponent Systems for the Efficient CO2 Fixation into a Variety of Cyclic Carbonates

Two new derivatives of the bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)methane modified by introduction of organosilyl groups on the central carbon atom, one of which bearing a chiral fragment, have been easily prepared. We verified the potential utility of these compounds through the reaction with [Zr(NMe₂)₄] for the preparation of novel zirconium complexes in which an ancillary bis(pyrazol-1-yl)methanide acts as a robust monoanionic tridentate scorpionate in a κ³-NNC chelating mode, forming strained four-membered heterometallacycles. These κ³-NNC-scorpionate zirconium amides were investigated as catalysts in combination with tetra-n-butylammonium bromide as cocatalyst for CO₂ fixation into five-membered cyclic carbonate products. The study has led to the development of an efficient zirconium-based bicomponent system for the selective cycloaddition reaction of CO₂ with epoxides. Kinetics investigations confirmed apparent first-order dependence on the catalyst and cocatalyst concentrations. In addition, this system displays very broad substrate scope, including mono- and disubstituted substrates, as well as the challenging biorenewable terpene derived limonene oxide, under mild and solvent-free conditions.

Update and Challenges in Carbon Dioxide-Based Polycarbonate Synthesis

The utilization of carbon dioxide as a comonomer to produce polycarbonates has attracted a great deal of attention from both industrial and academic communities because it promises to replace petroleum-derived plastics and supports a sustainable environment. Significant progress in the copolymerization of cyclic ethers (e.g., epoxide, oxetane) and carbon dioxide has been made in recent decades, owing to the rapid development of catalysts. In this Review, the focus is to summarize and discuss recent advances in the development of homogeneous catalysts, including metal- and organo-based complexes, as well as the preparation of carbon dioxide-based block copolymer and functional polycarbonates.

Palladium complexes containing imino phenoxide ligands: synthesis, luminescence, and their use as catalysts for the ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide

Abstract

The preparation, structural characterization, luminescence, and catalytic activity of three palladium(II) complexes bearing imino phenoxide ligands are reported. The X-ray studies revealed that the complexes are mononuclear with palladium centres coordinated in a square-planar coordination environment. Two of the complexes are emissive in solution at room temperature. The catalytic activities towards the ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide (rac-LA) were tested. Polymers with moderate molecular weights and relatively broad dispersity (Ð) were obtained. Kinetic studies revealed that the polymerization followed first-order kinetics.

Synthesis of Zn-Fe double metal cyanide complexes with imidazolium-based ionic liquid cocatalysts via ball milling for copolymerization of CO2 and propylene oxide

In this work, Zn-Fe double metal cyanide (DMC) catalysts were successfully synthesized via clean and efficient ball milling. Imidazolium-based ionic liquids as cocatalysts were incorporated into the structure of the DMC catalysts during the grinding process. The modified Zn-Fe DMC catalysts were effective for the alternating copolymerization of carbon dioxide and propylene oxide under controlled reaction conditions. The properties and structures of the Zn-Fe DMC catalysts and the resulting polymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, and thermogravimetric analysis. The results indicate that the Zn-Fe DMC catalysts exhibit higher thermal stability compared to the DMC catalysts without imidazolium-based ionic liquids (DMC-Blank). We determined that the introduction of a small amount of imidazolium-based ionic liquids can increase the carbonate content of the poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) copolymer in the range of 18.48-29.00%. The turnover numbers of PPC were ∼4.40. In addition, the measured number-average relative molecular mass was in the range of 2.96 × 103-4.98 × 103 with a narrow polydispersity index of 1.00-1.08.

Nb and Ta benzotriazole or benzoxazole phenoxide complexes as catalysts for the ring-opening polymerization of glycidol to synthesize hyperbranched polyglycerols

A series of novel mononuclear (1a-7a and 1b-6b) as well as tetranuclear (8a and 9a) niobium (Nb) and tantalum (Ta) complexes of benzotriazole or benzoxazole phenoxide pro-ligands bearing different substituents at the ortho and para positions of the phenol rings were synthesized and characterized. The reaction of NbCl₅ or TaCl₅ with one equivalent of benzotriazole or benzoxazole phenoxide pro-ligands (L1H-L6H) in dry toluene or chloroform produced the corresponding chloride (1a-6a and 1b-6b) and ethoxy (7a) mononuclear Nb and Ta complexes in high yields. Furthermore, from the mononuclear Nb complexes (1a or 4a), a new structural form of tetrameric niobium complexes (8a and 9a) was synthesized through a controlled hydrolysis reaction. The molecular structures of complexes 1b, 4b, 7a, 8a and 9a were unambiguously confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Furthermore, all these complexes (1a-9a and 1b-6b) were tested as catalysts for the ring-opening polymerisation (ROP) of glycidol to synthesize hyperbranched polyglycerols (HPG) by using 1,1,1-tris(hydroxymethyl)propane (TMP) as an initiator. The degree of branching (DB) observed was 0.30-0.54, which is an indication of hyperbranched structures. In particular, for the niobium complex with electron-withdrawing substituents on the benzoxazole phenoxide pro-ligand (5a), we achieved superior behavior for the ROP of glycidol in terms of activity, control of molecular weight (M_n) and molecular weight distributions (MWDs) (92% of glycidol to HPG, M_n = 10.52 kg mol^-1, MWDs <1.33, DB = 0.53 and T_g = -57 °C). A highly hydrophilic nature was observed for the synthesized HPG polymer by water contact angle measurement (20° to 35°).
