Abstract
Nowadays, aptamer-based biosensors and electrochemical measurements represent one of the efficient tools for the detection of drugs in both medical and veterinary. Precise trace values analysis of chemicals, especially drugs, plays a crucial role in food and therapeutic safety evaluations that are often time-consuming and costly. Ultimately, accurate determination of therapeutic medications like antibiotics in food, environmental resources, and biological matrices is very important for protecting public health and drug monitoring (TDM) for effective treatment. This review highlights recent advancements in electrochemical aptasensors as an innovative approach offering high sensitivity, specificity, and rapid detection of clinical and veterinary drugs at lower costs. We provide a comprehensive overview of the advancements and discuss the challenges and prospects of electrochemical aptasensing in drug residue detection across various samples.

Abstract
This paper presents a greener methodology for the first time to determine streptomycin in honey based on the modification of gel in the gel electromembrane extraction (G-EME) technique using exfoliated graphene (EG). Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) with a modified screen-printed carbon electrode was used as a detection technique. The EG was prepared by applying an electrochemical exfoliation of pencil graphite as an environmentally friendly and simple method. EG has conductivity properties, large specific surface areas, and the possibility of noncovalent π-π stacking. The addition of EG to G-EME could enhance the extraction efficiency by increasing the transfer rate of streptomycin, resulting in better LOQ. Out of several materials tested (AuNPs, AgNPs, graphene oxide, graphite, EG of pencil graphite 6B), EG powder of 6B was the best nanomaterial for carrying out G-EME. Furthermore, the problem associated with increasing electric current and electroendosmosis due to addition of graphene-based nanomaterial has been totally solved by tuning the acceptor phase's volume. Under the optimal conditions to perform EG@G-EME and DPV in the honey matrix, a good linearity was obtained between 20 and 580 μg kg-1 (R2 > 0.9964) with LOD and LOQ equal to 4.9 and 16.4 μg kg-1, respectively, in the honey matrix. Inter- and intra-assay results showed relative standard deviations of about 5 %. Compare to the conventional G-EME, our developed method showed better sensitivity.

Abstract
Antibiotics have emerged as ground-breaking medications for the treatment of infectious diseases, but due to the excessive use of antibiotics, some drugs have developed resistance to microorganisms. Because of their structural complexity, most antibiotics are excreted unchanged, polluting the water, soil, and natural resources. Additionally, food items are being polluted through the widespread use of antibiotics in animal feed. The normal concentrations of antibiotics in environmental samples typically vary from ng to g/L. Antibiotic residues in excess of these values can pose major risks the development of illnesses and infections/diseases. According to estimates, 300 million people will die prematurely in the next three decades (by 2050), and the WHO has proclaimed "antibiotic resistance" to be a severe economic and sociological hazard to public health. Several antibiotics have been recognised as possible environmental pollutants (EMA) and their detection in various matrices such as food, milk, and environmental samples is being investigated. Currently, chromatographic techniques coupled with different detectors (e.g., HPLC, LC-MS) are typically used for antibiotic analysis. Other screening methods include optical methods, ELISA, electrophoresis, biosensors, etc. To minimise the problems associated with antibiotics (i.e., the development of AMR) and the currently available analytical methods, electrochemical platforms have been investigated, and can provide a cost-effective, rapid and portable alternative. Despite the significant progress in this field, further developments are necessary to advance electrochemical sensors, e.g., through the use of multi-functional nanomaterials and advanced (bio)materials to ensure efficient detection, sensitivity, portability, and reliability. This review summarises the use of electrochemical biosensors for the detection of antibiotics in milk/milk products and presents a brief introduction to antibiotics and AMR followed by developments in the field of electrochemical biosensors based on (i) immunosensor, (ii) aptamer (iii) MIP, (iv) enzyme, (v) whole-cell and (vi) direct electrochemical approaches. The role of nanomaterials and sensor fabrication is discussed wherever necessary. Finally, the review discusses the challenges encountered and future perspectives. This review can serve as an insightful source of information, enhancing the awareness of the role of electrochemical biosensors in providing information for the preservation of the health of the public, of animals, and of our environment, globally.

Abstract
With the increasingly serious problem of aminoglycoside antibiotic residues, it is imperative to develop rapid, sensitive and efficient detection methods. This article reviews the detection methods of aminoglycoside antibiotics in animal-derived foods, including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, fluorescent immunoassay, chemical immunoassay, affinity sensing assay, lateral flow immunochromatography and molecular imprinted immunoassay. After evaluating the performance of these methods, the advantages and disadvantages were analyzed and compared. Furthermore, development prospects and research trends were proposed and summarized. This review can serve as a basis for further research and provide helpful references and new insights for the analysis of aminoglycoside residues. Accordingly, the in-depth investigation and analysis will certainly make great contributions to food safety, public hygiene and human health.

Abstract
A ratiometric electrochemical aptasensor based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) functionalization and hybridization chain reaction (HCR) assisted signal amplification has been for the first time designed for the detection of streptomycin (STR). The double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) formed by the hybridization of ferrocene (Fc)-labeled STR aptamer (Apt) and capture probe (CP) is first immobilized on the gold electrode (GE) surface via Au-S reaction. The specific binding of the target and Apt results in numerous Fc detachment from the sensing interface. Then, the remaining single-stranded CP is combined with AuNPs modified with initiator DNA (iDNA) by auxiliary DNA (aDNA). Among them, the iDNA triggers HCR between two hairpin probes (H1/H2), thus capturing a large number of methylene blue (MB) electrochemical probe, which generates a strong electrochemical signal of MB and a weak electrochemical signal of Fc. Signals are collected by square wave voltammetry (the potential window ranging from -0.5 V to 0.6 V, vs. Ag/AgCl ), and the oxidation peak currents at -0.200 V (MB) and 0.416 V (Fc) are recorded. The use of the ratiometric method has effectively improved the accuracy and reliability of the analysis. The successful application of AuNPs and HCR greatly improves the sensitivity of the sensor, and the detection limit is as low as 0.08 pM. It can sensitively determine STR in the range 0.1 pM to 10 nM. In addition, the designed aptasensor has been successfully applied to the detection of STR in milk and honey samples.

Abstract
Streptomycin (STR) an aminoglycoside antibiotic which is used against bacteria in human and animal infection, have serious side effects on different parts of human body. Therefore, there is a crucial need to detect trace amount of it in serum and food products. Aptamers are oligonucleotides or peptides, which bind their targets with high affinity and specificity. These properties make aptamers as suitable candidates for biosensing applications. A 79-mer ss-DNA aptamer was applied for the detection of small amount of STR in various aptasensors. But there is no structural information on the STR-binding aptamer and molecular details underlying the aptamer-STR binding remain unexplored. In this study we provided a 3D-structural model for 79-mer ss-DNA aptamer from the sequence. Using docking program and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation we predicted the binding pocket of ss-DNA aptamer. Our results show STR streptose ring is buried within the groove of DNA model and capped by non Watson-Crick bases. STR interacts with aptamer through forming stable hydrogen bonds. Our computational findings are in fair agreement with experimental results. With the atomic structural details, we gained new insight into the Apt-STR binding interaction that can help to further optimize aptamer efficiency in biosensing applications.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Abstract
Several antibiotics have been applied to veterinary medicine due to their broad-spectrum of antibacterial activity and prophylactic power. Residues of these antibiotics can be accumulated in dairy cattle, in addition to promoting contamination of the environment and, in more serious cases, in milk, causing a public health problem. Different regulatory agencies establish maximum residue limits for these antibiotics in milk, so it becomes important to develop sensitive analytical methods for monitoring these compounds. Electrochemical techniques are important analytical tools in analytical chemistry because they present low cost, simplicity, high sensitivity, and adequate analytical frequency (sample throughput) for routine analyses. In this sense, this review summarizes the state of the art of the main electrochemical sensors and biosensors, instrumental techniques, and sample preparation used for the development of analytical methods, published in the last five years, for the monitoring of different classes of antibiotics: aminoglycosides, amphenicols, beta-lactams, fluoroquinolones, sulfonamides, and tetracyclines, in milk samples. The different strategies to develop electrochemical sensors and biosensors are critically compared considering their analytical features. The mechanisms of electrochemical oxidation/reduction of the antibiotics are revised and discussed considering strategies to improve the selectivity of the method. In addition, current challenges and future prospects are discussed.

Abstract
The detection of antimicrobial residues in food products of animal origin is of utmost importance. Indeed antimicrobial residues could be present in animal derived food products because of animal treatments for curative purposes or from illegal use. The usual screening methods to detect antimicrobial residues in food are microbiological, immunological or physico-chemical methods. The development of biosensors to propose sensitive, cheap and quick alternatives to classical methods is constantly increasing. Aptasensors are one of the major trends proposed in the literature, in parallel with the development of immunosensors based on antibodies. The characteristics of electrochemical sensors (i.e., low cost, miniaturization, and portable instrumentation) make them very good candidates to develop screening methods for antimicrobial residues in food products. This review will focus on the recent advances in the development of electrochemical aptasensors for the detection of antimicrobial residues in food products. The contribution of nanomaterials to improve the performance characteristics of electrochemical aptasensors (e.g., Sensitivity, easiness, stability) in the last ten years, as well as signal amplification techniques will be highlighted.

Abstract
As antibiotic pollution is gaining prominence as a global issue, the demand for detection of streptomycin (STR), which is a widely used antibiotic with potential human health and ecological risks, has attracted increasing attention. Aptamer-based biosensors have been developed for the detection of STR in buffers and samples, however, the non-target signals due to the conformational variation of free aptamers possibly affect their sensitivity and stability. In this study, by introducing the STR-specific split aptamer (SPA), a sensitive evanescent wave fluorescent (EWF) biosensor is developed for the sandwich-type based detection of STR. The standard calibration curve obtained for STR has a detection limit of 33 nM with a linear range of 60-526 nM. This biosensor exhibited good selectivity, reliable reusability for at least 100 times measurements, and high recovery rates for spiked water samples; moreover, all detection steps are easy-to-operate and can be completed in 5 min. Therefore, it exhibits great promise for actual on-site environmental monitoring. Additionally, without introducing any other oligonucleotides or auxiliary materials, this SPA-based biosensing method shows potential as a simple, sensitive, and low-cost manner for the detection of other small molecular targets.

Abstract
Carbon nanomaterials offer unique opportunities for the assembling of electrochemical aptasensors due to their high electroconductivity, redox activity, compatibility with biochemical receptors and broad possibilities of functionalization and combination with other auxiliary reagents. In this review, the progress in the development of electrochemical aptasensors based on carbon nanomaterials in 2016–2020 is considered with particular emphasis on the role of carbon materials in aptamer immobilization and signal generation. The synthesis and properties of carbon nanotubes, graphene materials, carbon nitride, carbon black particles and fullerene are described and their implementation in the electrochemical biosensors are summarized. Examples of electrochemical aptasensors are classified in accordance with the content of the surface layer and signal measurement mode. In conclusion, the drawbacks and future prospects of carbon nanomaterials’ application in electrochemical aptasensors are briefly discussed.

Abstract
An electrochemical method is described for the determination of streptomycin (STR). It is making use of a gold electrode coated with a thin mesoporous silica film (MSF). In addition, silver nanoparticles were coated on the MSF to increase the surface area, to bind a large amount of aptamer (Apt), and to improve the electrical conductivity. In the presence of STR, it will bind to the Apt and hinder the diffusion of the redox probe hexacyanoferrate through the nanochannels of the mesoporous film. The aptasensor, best operated at a working potential of 0.22 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) has a linear response in the 1 fg.mL-1 to 6.2 ng.mL-1 STR concentration range. The detection limit is 0.33 fg.mL-1. The assay was successfully validated by analyzing spiked samples of milk and blood serum. Graphical abstract Voltammetric assay of streptomycin (STR) by using a Fe(CN)63-/4- probe. The aptamer was immobilized on a gold electrode modified with a mesoporous silica thin film (MSF) that was functionalized with (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) and silver nanoparticles (AgNP). Incubation with STR leads to a decrease of the current.

Abstract
Antibiotic resistance and, accordingly, their pollution because of uncontrolled usage has emerged as a serious problem in recent years. Hence, there is an increased demand to develop robust, easy, and sensitive methods for rapid evaluation of antibiotics and their residues. Among different analytical methods, the aptamer-based biosensors (aptasensors) have attracted considerable attention because of good selectivity, specificity, and sensitivity. This review gives an overview about recently-developed aptasensors for antibiotic detection. The use of various aptamer assays to determine different groups of antibiotics, like β-lactams, aminoglycosides, anthracyclines, chloramphenicol, (fluoro)quinolones, lincosamide, tetracyclines, and sulfonamides are presented in this paper.

Abstract
In the present study, we report a facile approach to employ gold nanoparticle (AuNPs) and thiol graphene quantum dots (GQD-SH) as the nanomaterial for ultrasensitive detection of streptomycin (STR). Based on this strategy, a GQD-SH was immobilized onto the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). AuNPs have been immobilized on SH groups of GQDs through bonding formation of AuS and Apt have been loaded on the electrode surface through the interaction between thiol group of aptamer. By incubating STR as a target onto the surface of the prepared Apt/AuNPs/GQD-SH/GCE as a proposed nanoaptasensor, the Apt/STR complex was formed and the changes of the electrochemical signal were evaluated with the EIS technique. The proposed nanoaptasensor showed wide linear range from 0.1 to 700pgml-1. Finally, the proposed nanoaptasensor was successfully applied for the determination of STR in real samples and satisfactory results were obtained.

Abstract
Aptamers, are being increasingly employed as favorable receptors for constructing highly sensitive biosensors, for their remarkable affinities towards certain targets including a wide scope of biological or chemical substances, and their superiority over other biologic receptors. The selectivity and affinity of the aptamers have been integrated with the wise design of the assay, applying suitable modifications, such as nanomaterials on the electrode surface, employing oligonucleotide-specific amplification strategies or, their combinations. After successful performance of the electrochemical aptasensors for biomedical applications, the food sector with its direct implication for human health, which demands rapid and sensitive and economic analytical solutions for determination of health threatening contaminants in all stages of production process, is the next field of research for developing efficient electrochemical aptasensors. The aim of this review is to categorize and introduce food hazards and summarize the recent electrochemical aptasensors that have been developed to address these contaminants.

Abstract
Anti-microbial drugs are widely employed for the treatment and cure of diseases in animals, promotion of animal growth, and feed efficiency. However, the scientific literature has indicated the possible presence of antimicrobial drug residues in animal-derived food, making it one of the key public concerns for food safety. Therefore, it is highly desirable to design fast and accurate methodologies to monitor antimicrobial drug residues in animal-derived food. Legislation is in place in many countries to ensure antimicrobial drug residue quantities are less than the maximum residue limits (MRL) defined on the basis of food safety. In this context, the recent years have witnessed a special interest in the field of electrochemical biosensors for food safety, based on their unique analytical features. This review article is focused on the recent progress in the domain of electrochemical biosensors to monitor antimicrobial drug residues in animal-derived food.

Abstract
In this work, we first conjugated a short peptide to thrombin binding aptamer (TBA) and bond hemin to the hybrid, effectively rendering hemin/G4-peptide more active over the original hemin/G4, so that a highly sensitive electrochemical thrombin (TB) aptasensor was developed based on it and PtNTs@rGO nanocomposite. It was the first report on the application of hemin/G4-peptide in electrochemical aptasensor. PtNTs@rGO with large surface area served as excellent nanocarrier for high loading of hemin/G4-peptide hybrids, resulting in the formation of hemin/G4-peptide-PtNTs@rGO bioconjugate as the secondary aptamer and further signal enhancement. The specific affinity of aptamer for target TB made the secondary aptamer go into the sensing interface, and then a noticeable current signal was obtained from hemin without additional redox mediators. Due to the collaborative electrocatalysis of hemin/G4-peptide and PtNTs toward H2O2, which was formed in situ during the process of hemin/G4-peptide-catalyzed oxidation of NADH with dissolved O2, the current intensity increased dramatically. Such an electrochemical aptasensing system could be used to detect TB with a linear range of 0.05 pM-60nM and very lower detection limit of 15fM. Notably, this method exhibited a higher sensitivity than that of many hemin/G4-based electrochemical strategies for TB detection due to the improvement of the catalytic activity of hemin/G4-peptide. The present works opened a new way for expanding the application of hemin/G4 in biological detection. With the mediator-free, proteinous enzyme-free yet high-sensitivity advantages, this electrochemical aptasensor held great promise for other biomarker detections in clinical diagnostics.
