Computational tools to study non-covalent interactions and confinement effects in chemical systems

Confinement is a very common phenomenon in chemistry, for example, when molecules are located inside cavities. In these conditions, the electronic structure of atoms and molecules is modified. These changes could be mapped through the interaction with other molecules since non-covalent interactions between molecules are also influenced by confinement. In this work we address both topics, non-covalent interactions, and confined systems, using quantum chemistry tools with new software, emphasizing the importance of analyzing both fields simultaneously.

Mitigating toxicity of acetamiprid removal techniques - Fe modified zeolites in focus

All remediation pathways in aqueous solutions come down to three dominant ones - physical, chemical, and combinations thereof. Materials proposed for adsorption and oxidative degradation can induce positive or negative effects on cells compared to the pollutants themselves. Present research deals with the effects different methods for pesticide remediation have and how they impact cytotoxicity. With this particular intention, Fe-modified zeolites (obtained via citrate/oxalate complexes) of three zeotypes (MFI, BEA and FAU) were prepared and tested as adsorbents and Fenton catalysts for the removal of the acetamiprid pesticide. The materials are characterized by AFM, FTIR spectroscopy and ICP-OES. A different effect of the zeolite framework and modification route was found among the samples, which leads to pronounced adsorption (FAU), efficient Fenton degradation (MFI) or synergistic effect of both mechanisms (BEA). The cytotoxic effects of acetamiprid in the presence of zeolites, in pristine and modified forms, were tested on the MRC-5 human fibroblast cell line. A complete survey of the toxicity effect behind different pesticide removal methods is presented. Since neither adsorption nor catalytic degradation is the best option for pesticide removal, the focus is shifted to a combination of these methods, which proved to be optimal for pesticide toxicity reduction.

Imidacloprid Crystal Polymorphs for Disease Vector Control and Pollinator Protection

Imidacloprid, the world's leading insecticide, has been approved recently for controlling infectious disease vectors; yet, in agricultural settings, it has been implicated in the frightening decline of pollinators. This argues for strategies that sharply reduce the environmental impact of imidacloprid. When used as a contact insecticide, the effectiveness of imidacloprid relies on physical contact between its crystal surfaces and insect tarsi. Herein, seven new imidacloprid crystal polymorphs are reported, adding to two known forms. Anticipating that insect uptake of imidacloprid molecules would depend on the respective free energies of crystal polymorph surfaces, measurements of insect knockdown times for the metastable crystal forms were as much as nine times faster acting than the commercial form against Aedes, Anopheles, and Culex mosquitoes as well as Drosophila (fruit flies). These results suggest that replacement of commercially available imidacloprid crystals (a.k.a. Form I) in space-spraying with any one of three new polymorphs, Forms IV, VI, IX, would suppress vector-borne disease transmission while reducing environmental exposure and harm to nontarget organisms.

Analyzing ZnO clusters through the density-functional theory

The potential energy surface of Zn _n O _n clusters (n = 2, 4, 6, 8) has been explored by using a simulated annealing method. For n = 2, 4, and 6, the CCSD(T)/TZP method was used as the reference, and from here it is shown that the M06-2X/TZP method gives the lowest deviations over PBE, PBE0, B3LYP, M06, and MP2 methods. Thus, with the M06-2X method we predict isomers of Zn _n O _n clusters, which coincide with some isomers reported previously. By using the atoms in molecules analysis, possible contacts between Zn and O atoms were found for all structures studied in this article. The bond paths involved in several clusters suggest that Zn _n O _n clusters can be obtained from the zincite (ZnO crystal), such an observation was confirmed for clusters with n = 2 - 9,18 and 20. The structure with n = 23 was obtained by the procedure presented here, from crystal information, which could be important to confirm experimental data delivered for n = 18 and 23.
