Selective Fluorescent Sensing for Iron in Aqueous Solution by A Novel Functionalized Pillar[5]arene

Iron ion is one of the most physiologically important elements in metabolic processes, indispensable for all living systems. Since its excess can lead to severe diseases, new approaches for its monitoring in water samples are urgently needed to meet requirements. Here, we firstly report a novel and universal route for the synthesis of a series of pillar[n]arene derivates containing one benzoquinone unit by photocatalysis. With this in hand, an anthracene - appended water - soluble pillar[5]arene (H) with excellent fluorescence sensing potency was prepared. H enabled the ultrasensitive detection of iron ions in aqueous solution with limits of detection of 10-8  M. Over a wide range of metal ions, H exhibited specific selectivity toward Fe3+ . More importantly, H could still properly operate in a simulated sewage sample, coexisting with multiple interference ions.

A Carbazole-based Fluorescent Turn-off Chemosensor for Iron (II/III) Detection in a Dimethyl Sulfoxide

We designed a novel carbazole-based chemosensor from 2-(N-hexylcarbazol-3'-yl)-pyridine-5-carbaldehyde which was named probe 7b. The main purpose of this study is to investigate whether metal ions in liquid media can be detected with probe 7b. The details were presented in this paper. First, the molecular absorption and fluorescence properties of probe 7b were characterized by spectrophotometers. Then, several methods were applied to check its sensing properties. The results showed that probe 7b has a sense towards Fe3+ ion than other interfering metal ions. The selectivity and sensitivity of probe 7b towards Fe3+ were very satisfactory to use in applications. Also, it was observed that when aqueous Fe3+ ion solutions were added to probe 7b in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), the fluorescence intensity of probe 7b decreased. This situation (turn-off of emission) is due to the paramagnetic effect between probe 7b and Fe3+ ions. The limit of detection (LOD) value was found as 1.38 nM for probe 7b. This value is very small to compete with its counterparts in the literature. A real sample experiment indicated that probe 7b can detect Fe3+ ions more than other ions in real media, too. As a result, it was deduced that probe 7b is a very strong candidate to use in sensor technology.

Copillar[5]arene Chemistry: Synthesis and Applications

Research on pillar[n]arenes has witnessed a very quick expansion. This emerging class of functionalized macrocyclic oligoarenes not only offers host–guest properties due to the presence of the central cavity, but also presents a wide variety of covalent functionalization possibilities. This short review focuses on copillararenes, a subfamily of pillar[n]arenes. In copillararenes, at least one of the hydroquinone units bears different functional groups compared to the others. After having defined the particular features of copillararenes, this short review compares the different synthetic strategies allowing their construction. Some key applications and future perspectives are also described.

Recent Applications of Pillar[n]arene-Based Host-Guest Recognition in Chemosensing and Imaging

Pillar[n]arene is a novel kind of synthetic supramolecular macrocyclic host characterized by its particular pillar-shaped structure consisting of an electron-rich cavity and two finely adjustable rims. Benefiting from its rigid structure, facile synthesis, ease of functionalization, and outstanding host-guest chemistry, pillar[n]arene shows great potential for diverse applications. Significantly, the host-guest recognition of pillar[n]arene provides a novel approach for chemosensing and imaging. Herein, this Review critically and comprehensively reviews the applications of pillar[n]arene-based host-guest recognition in chemosensing and imaging. The sensing and imaging mechanisms as well as the unique roles and advantages of pillar[n]arene-based host-guest recognition are summarized. In addition, preparations of hybrid materials based on pillar[n]arene and inorganic materials are also introduced comprehensively in the light of chemosensing and imaging. Finally, current challenges and perspectives on pillar[n]arene-based host-guest recognition in chemosensing and imaging are outlined.

Sensing mechanism of fluorogenic urea with fluoride in solvent media: A new fluorescence quenching mechanism

The interaction of 1-Phenyl-3-(pyren-1-yl) urea (LH) and fluoride anion (F^-) with a unique ON¹-OFF-ON² fluorescent response has been investigated by the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations. The hydrogen-bonding dynamics and photophysical properties of the complex LH-F, as well as its isolated receptor LH and anion form L-H₁, have been studied in detail. We demonstrate that the intermolecular hydrogen bond (N-H…F) of the complex LH-F is greatly enhanced in the electronically excited state. The nonradiative deactivation via electron transfer and internal conversion rather than excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) can be facilitated by the excited state hydrogen bond strengthening. The results have been cross-validated by molecular structure, electronic spectra, frontier molecular orbitals, and infrared spectra as well as hydrogen bond binding energy. These results indicate that the current calculations completely reproduce the experimental results and provide compelling evidence for the sensing mechanism of LH for F^-.

Synthesis of functionalized copillar[4+1]arenes and rotaxane as heteromultivalent scaffolds

In this study, novel copillar[4+1]arenes were used as central heteromultivalent scaffolds via orthogonal couplings with a series of biologically relevant molecules such as carbohydrates, α-amino acids, biotin and phenylboronic acid. Further modifications by introducing maleimides or cyclooctyne groups provided molecular probes adapted to copper-free click chemistry. An octa-azidated fluorescent rotaxane bearing two distinct ligands was also generated in a fully controlled manner.

Selective Detection of Fe3+, F-, and Cysteine by a Novel Triazole-Linked Decaamine Derivative of Pillar[5]arene and Its Metal Ion Complex in Water

Appropriately functionalized pillar[n]arenes are elegant supramolecular hosts for ion and molecule sensing. A water-soluble decaamine derivative of pillar[5]arene (APA) bearing triazole and amide moieties is synthesized. The ion and molecular recognition properties of APA are studied by fluorescence, UV-visible, and ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The APA selectively detects Fe³⁺ among 11 studied ions, which are important in several biological processes. Moreover, the in situ prepared Fe³⁺ complex of APA (FeAPA) exhibits the highest responsiveness toward F^- (∼12-fold) among 11 anions and cysteine (∼120-fold) among the 20 naturally occurring amino acids by a fluorescence turn-on mechanism.

Multi-stimuli-responsive supramolecular gel constructed by pillar[5]arene-based pseudorotaxanes for efficient detection and separation of multi-analytes in aqueous solution

Here, a novel pseudorotaxanes-type crosslinker of a supramolecular polymer network (WP5-PN) has been constructed from a host water-soluble pillar[5]arene (WP5) and a guest naphthalene dimethylamine derivative (PN) via a stepwise process involving multiple non-covalent interactions. The obtained supramolecular polymers were able to transform into a supramolecular polymer gel (WP5-PN-G) and show AIE properties in DMSO-H2O binary solution. Interestingly, due to the dynamic and reversible nature of non-covalent interactions, the resultant supramolecular polymer gels exhibited external stimuli-responsiveness to different parameters, such as temperature, acid-base, competitive guest and mechanical stress. Moreover, WP5-PN-G showed fluorescent response for Fe3+ and Cu2+, while its xerogel showed excellent recyclable separation properties for these metal ions with adsorption rates up to 98.07% and 95.38%, respectively. Moreover, by rational introduction of these metal ions into the WP5-PN-G, corresponding metal ion coordinated metallogels, such as WP5-PN-FeG and WP5-PN-CuG were obtained. These metallogels could selectively and sensitively sense F- and CN-, respectively. The detection limits of these metallogels for F- and CN- were about 1 × 10-8 M. The WP5-PN-G has potential applications in multi-analytes detection and separation as well as fluorescent display materials.

Bis- and mono(m-benzoic acid)-functionalized pillar[5]arenes

Installation of m-benzoic acid functionalities on pillar[5]arene rims resulted in bis- and mono(m-benzoic acid)-functionalized pillar[5]arenes 1 and 2. Bis(m-benzoic acid)-functionalized pillar[5]arene 1 was able to self-assemble to form one-dimensional channels with DMF molecules residing in pillar[5]arene cavities. Esterification of two carboxylic acids in 1 with decane-1,10-diol did not afford a [1]catenane, but a bicyclic compound. Although 1-decanol esterification of mono(m-benzoic acid)-functionalized pillar[5]arene 2 did not form a self-included [1]pseudorotaxane-like structure, a mono(decyl m-benzoate)-functionalized pillar[5]arene bearing an ethyl acetate chain was found to form a self-included complex with the ethyl acetate moiety residing inside the pillar[5]arene cavity.
