State-of-the-art progress for the selective crystallization of actinides, synthesis of actinide compounds and their functionalization

Crystallization and immobilization of actinides to form actinide compounds are of significant importance for the extraction and reutilization of nuclear waste in the nuclear industry. In this paper, the state-of-art progress in the crystallization of actinides are summarized, as well as the main functionalization of the actinide compounds, i.e., as adsorbents for heavy metal ions and organic pollutant in waste management, as (photo)catalysts for organic degradation and conversion, including degradation of organic dyes and antibiotics, dehydrogenation of N-heterocycles, CO₂ cycloaddition, selective alcohol oxidation and selective oxidation of sulfides. This review will give a comprehensive summary about the synthesis and application exploration of solid actinide crystalline salts and actinide-based metal organic frameworks in the past decades. Finally, the future perspectives and challenges are proposed in the end to give a promising direction for future investigation.

Uranyl Organic Framework as a Highly Selective and Sensitive Turn-on and Turn-off Luminescent Sensor for Dual Functional Detection Arginine and MnO4. Inorg Chem 2020;59:5004-5017. [PMID: 32207299 DOI: 10.1021/acs.inorgchem.0c00236]

Five new uranyl coordination polymers were prepared by the hydrothermal method based on 5-nitroisophthalic acid (H₂nip) as (UO₂)(nip)(2,2'-bpy) (1), (H₂4,4'-bpy)·[(UO₂)₃(nip)₄]·(4,4'-bpy) (2), (H₂bpe)·[(UO₂)_0.5(nip)] (3), (H₂ bpp)·[(UO₂)₂-(nip)₃]·H₂O (4), and (H₂tmp)·[(UO₂)(nip)₂](5) [2,2'-bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, 4,4'-bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine, bpe = 4,4'-vinylenedipyridine, bpp = 4,4' -trimethylenedipyridine, tmp = tetramethylpyrazine]. All of these synthesized complexes have been characterized by single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, IR spectra, thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis, and luminescent properties. In particular, it is found that compounds 1 and 4 can be used as a luminescent sensor to efficiently detect arginine in aqueous solution by means of "turn-on"; the detection limits were 1.06 × 10^-6 and 6.42 × 10^-6 mol/L, respectively. Moreover, 4 can also be used as a bifunctional sensor for selective sensing of MnO₄^- anion by "turn-off". The detection limit of MnO₄^- in water was 1.79 × 10^-6 mol/L; the K_sv was 1.88 × 10⁴. The sensing effect of arginine in simulated grape juice samples and MnO₄^- in simulated river water samples was also investigated by this sensing system with high recovery. In addition, the possible mechanism of sensing arginine and MnO₄^- in the aqueous solution was discussed.

Highly Sensitive Detection of UV Radiation Using a Uranium Coordination Polymer

The accurate detection of UV radiation is required in a wide range of chemical industries and environmental or biological related applications. Conventional methods taking advantage of semiconductor photodetectors suffer from several drawbacks such as sophisticated synthesis and manufacturing procedure, not being able to measure the accumulated UV dosage as well as high defect density in the material. Searching for new strategies or materials serving as precise UV dosage sensor with extremely low detection limit is still highly desirable. In this work, a radiation resistant uranium coordination polymer [UO₂(L)(DMF)] (L = 5-nitroisophthalic acid, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide, denoted as compound 1) was successfully synthesized through mild solvothermal method and investigated as a unique UV probe with the detection limit of 2.4 × 10^-7 J. On the basis of the UV dosage dependent luminescence spectra, EPR analysis, single crystal structure investigation, and the DFT calculation, the UV-induced radical quenching mechanism was confirmed. Importantly, the generated radicals are of significant stability which offers the opportunity for measuring the accumulated UV radiation dosage. Furthermore, the powder material of compound 1 was further upgraded into membrane material without loss in luminescence intensity to investigate the real application potentials. To the best of our knowledge, compound 1 represents the most sensitive coordination polymer based UV dosage probe reported to date.

Two novel AIEE-active imidazole/ α-cyanostilbene derivatives: photophysical properties, reversible fluorescence switching, and detection of explosives

Novel imidazole derivatives containing the α-cyanostilbene unit can act as reversible acid/base stimulated fluorescence switches in the solid state, as chemosensors for explosives detection in aqueous systems, and as test strip detectors.
