Influence of core size on self-assembled molecular networks composed of C3h-symmetric building blocks through hydrogen bonding interactions: structural features and chirality

The effect of the core size on the structure and chirality of self-assembled molecular networks was investigated using two aromatic carboxylic acid derivatives with frameworks displaying C3h symmetry, triphenylene derivative H3TTCA and dehydrobenzo[12]annulene (DBA) derivative DBACOOH, each having three carboxy groups per molecule. Scanning tunneling microscopy observations at the 1-heptanoic acid/graphite interface revealed H3TTCA exclusively forming a chiral honeycomb structure, and DBACOOH forming three structures (type I, II, and III structures) depending on its concentration and whether the system is subjected to annealing treatment. Hydrogen bonding interaction patterns and chirality were carefully analyzed based on a modeling study using molecular mechanics simulations. Moreover, DBACOOH forms chiral honeycomb structures through the co-adsorption of guest molecules. Structural diversity observed for DBACOOH is attributed to its relatively large core size, with this feature modulating the balance between molecule-molecule and molecule-substrate interactions.

Dynamic Supramolecular Template: Multiple Stimuli-Controlled Size Adjustment of Porous Networks

Dynamically switchable porous networks offer exciting potential in functionalizing surfaces. The structure and morphology of the networks can be controlled by applying external stimuli. Here, a dynamic supramolecular template assembled by 1,3,5-tris(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene (BTB) is successfully achieved at the liquid-solid interface by applying two external stimuli simultaneously. Upon varying the concentration of BTB solution together with switching the polarity of the sample bias, self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) undergo phase transitions twice: an immediate transition from a compact structure to a macroporous (honeycomb) structure as a response to the change in the electric field and a fast-changing transition from the macroporous to a microporous (oblique) structure. With saturated BTB solution, however, the initial compact structure can only transform into the oblique structure after switching the polarity of the sample bias without the appearance of a honeycomb structure. The different phase transitions suggest that the dynamic supramolecular template can only survive at a specific concentration range and is obtainable by performing multiple stimuli simultaneously. Interestingly, introducing a guest molecule to the system can adjust the phase transition process and effectively stabilize the honeycomb structure of BTB. The flexibility associated with the porous networks renders it a dynamic supramolecular template for guest binding.

Formation of multicomponent 2D assemblies of C 2v-symmetric terphenyl tetracarboxylic acid at the solid/liquid interface: recognition, selection, and transformation

We report on the two-dimensional self-assembly of C_2v-symmetric [1,1′:3′,1′′-terphenyl]-3,3′′,5,5′′-tetracarboxylic acid (TPTA) at the solid/liquid interface by using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Two kinds of different self-assembly structure, i.e. a close-packed and porous rosette structure, are formed by TPTA molecules through intermolecular hydrogen bonds. When adding coronene (COR) as a guest into the TPTA assembly, structural transformation from a densely packed row structure to a rosette network structure is observed. It was found that two kinds of cavities with different sizes in the rosette network structure can be used to realize the selective co-adsorption of guest molecules with appropriate shape and size. Three-component 2D host–guest structures were successfully constructed by using 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexakis(4-bromophenyl)benzene (HBPBE) and copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) as guest molecules.

Self-assembled flower structures formed by C3-symmetric aromatic carboxylic acids with meta-carboxyl groups

H₆BTE self-assembled into flower-like structures with two types of cavities at the HA/HOPG interface, and the guest molecule COR was only trapped in the A-type cavities at low and high concentrations of COR.

Surface modification and pattern formation by nucleobases and their coordination complexes

This review presents recent progress concerning the organization of nucleobases on highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG), mica, Cu(110) and Au(111) surfaces, followed by their studies using microscopy methods such as atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Interesting research prospects related to surface patterning by nucleobases, nucleobase-functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and metal–nucleobase coordination polymers are also discussed, which offer a wide array of functional molecules for advanced applications. Nucleobases and their analogs are able to invoke non-covalent interactions such as π–π stacking and hydrogen bonding, and possess the required framework to coordinate metal ions, giving rise to fascinating supramolecular architectures. The latter could be transferred to conductive substrates, such as HOPG and gold, for assessment by high-end tunneling microscopy under various conditions. Clear understanding of the principles governing nucleobase self-assembly and metal ion complexation, and precise control over generation of functional architectures, might lead to custom assemblies for targeted nanotechnological and nanomaterial applications.

This review highlights recent advancements in surface patterning of nucleobases, their analogs including nucleobase-CNT hybrids and metal complexes, using various microscopy techniques for nanotechnological applications.
