Engineering the hot spots in squared arrays of gold nanoparticles on a silver film

Composite Structure of Ag Colloidal Particles and Au Sinusoidal Nanograting with Large-Scale Ultra-High Field Enhancement for SERS Detection

In this study, a novel composite Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) substrate is proposed for ultrasensitive detection. Consisting of gold sinusoidal nanograting and silver colloidal nanoparticles (AgNPs-AuSG), this type of SERS substrate is easy for fabrication by maskless laser interference lithography, and capable of providing large-scale ultra-high field enhancement, attributed to localized surface plasmons (LSPs) and surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). The enhancement factor (EF) of this composite substrate is as high as up to 10 orders of magnitude in the simulation experiment. Experimental results show that this large-area, productive SERS substrate of AgNPs-AuSG has realized sensitive TNT and RDX detection with the limit of detection (LOD) of 10−10 M, which may be a potential candidate for trace explosives detection.

Engineering Electromagnetic Hot-Spots in Nanoparticle Cluster Arrays on Reflective Substrates for Highly Sensitive Detection of (Bio)molecular Analytes

Intense electromagnetic (EM) hot-spots arising at the junctions or gaps in plasmonic nanoparticle assemblies can drive ultrahigh sensitivity in molecular detection by surface-enhanced spectroscopies. Harnessing this potential however requires access to the confined physical space at the EM hot-spots, which is a challenge for larger analytes such as biomolecules. Here, we demonstrate self-assembly derived gold nanoparticle cluster arrays (NCAs) on gold substrates exhibiting controlled interparticle (<1 nm wide) and intercluster (<10 nm wide) hot-spots as highly promising in this direction. Sensitivity of the NCAs toward detection of small (<1 nm) or large (protein-receptor interactions) analytes in surface-enhanced Raman and metal-enhanced fluorescence assays is found to be strongly impacted by the size of the cluster and the presence of reflective substrates. Experiments supported by numerical simulations attribute the higher sensitivity to higher EM field enhancements at the hot-spots, as well as greater analyte leverage over EM hot-spots. The best-performing arrays could push the sensitivity down to picomolar detection limits for sub-nanometric organic analytes as well as large protein analytes. The investigation paves the way for rational design of plasmonic biosensors and highlights the unique capabilities of a molecular self-assembly approach toward catering to this objective.

Macroscopic two-dimensional monolayer films of gold nanoparticles: fabrication strategies, surface engineering and functional applications

In the last few decades, two-dimensional monolayer films of gold nanoparticles (2D MFGS) have attracted increasing attention in various fields, due to their superior attributes of macroscopic size and accessible fabrication, controllable electromagnetic enhancement, distinctive optical harvesting and electron transport capabilities. This review will focus on the recent progress of 2D monolayer films of gold nanoparticles in construction approaches, surface engineering strategies and functional applications in the optical and electric fields. The research challenges and prospective directions of 2D MFGS are also discussed. This review would promote a better understanding of 2D MFGS and establish a necessary bridge among the multidisciplinary research fields.

Plasmonic nanoparticle-film-assisted photoelectrochemical catalysis across the entire visible-NIR region

Low solar light absorption and high electron-hole pair recombination are still the main challenges for solar energy conversion. Here, we design a plasmonic nanoparticle (NP)-film with a unique structure combining the advantages of a Au NP and film, which exhibits strong broadband absorption from the visible to near-infrared (NIR) wavelength range. In addition, the high density of sub-1 nm inter-particle gaps in the Au NP-film supports electromagnetic field enhancement of several orders of magnitude that greatly promotes the generation and separation of electron-hole pairs. Accordingly, the plasmonic NP-film-assisted photocatalyst (TiO₂/90Au/TiO₂) leads to an 88-fold increase in the photocurrent density at 0.75 V vs. RHE in 25% methanol solution under visible-NIR light irradiation (λ > 420 nm) compared to a TiO₂ film, which is higher than those of the ever reported Au/TiO₂ photocatalysts in the entire visible-NIR range. Our finding indicates a promising way to explore full solar spectrum photocatalysts, which can be easily extended to other energy conversion applications.
