Constructing bulk defective perovskite SrTiO3 nanocubes for high performance photocatalysts

Criteria for Efficient Photocatalytic Water Splitting Revealed by Studying Carrier Dynamics in a Model Al-doped SrTiO3 Photocatalyst

Overall water splitting (OWS) using semiconductor photocatalysts is a promising method for solar fuel production. Achieving a high quantum efficiency is one of the most important prerequisites for photocatalysts to realize high solar-to-fuel efficiency. In a recent study (Nature 2020, 58, 411-414), a quantum efficiency of almost 100 % has been achieved in an aluminum-doped strontium titanate (SrTiO3  : Al) photocatalyst. Herein, using the SrTiO3  : Al as a model photocatalyst, we reveal the criteria for efficient photocatalytic water splitting by investigating the carrier dynamics through a comprehensive photoluminescence study. It is found that the Al doping suppresses the generation of Ti3+ recombination centers in SrTiO3 , the surface band bending facilitates charge separation, and the in situ photo-deposited Rh/Cr2 O3 and CoOOH co-catalysts render efficient charge extraction. By suppressing photocarrier recombination and establishing a facile charge separation and extraction mechanism, high quantum efficiency can be achieved even on photocatalysts with a very short (sub-ns) intrinsic photocarrier lifetime, challenging the belief that a long carrier lifetime is a fundamental requirement. Our findings could provide guidance on the design of OWS photocatalysts toward more efficient solar-to-fuel conversion.

Enhanced water splitting over ethylenediaminetetraacetate treated SrTiO3 photocatalysts with high crystallinity, reduced size, and surface nanostructure

The key elements that influence the properties and capabilities of particulate photocatalysts are their crystallinity, size, and surface active sites. However, simultaneously controlling these three variables remains a challenge. In this study, we present the first exploration into the use of a simple ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) etching technique to decrease the particle size and increase the surface active sites of photocatalysts while preserving their high crystallinity. By employing SrTiO3 as a model photocatalyst, we were able to create an ordered step nanostructure on the surface of sintered SrTiO3. As a result of the EDTA treatment, the particle size was reduced while the crystallinity was maintained. The separation of photogenerated electrons and holes is enhanced by the combination of reduced particle size and high crystallinity. To enhance chemical reaction activities, the organized surface nano-step structures serve as high-activity sites. As a result, when subjected to simulated light irradiation, the EDTA-treated SrTiO3 samples demonstrate improved photocatalytic performance for water splitting into H2 and O2 in a stoichiometric amount that is 3.8 times greater than that of untreated SrTiO3. Since EDTA interacts with most metals, this simple EDTA etching technique has the potential to be further developed to modify additional photocatalysts with exceptional performance for a variety of applications.

Tailoring defects in SrTiO3 by one step nanoarchitectonics for realizing photocatalytic nitrogen fixation in pure water

Surface contamination of materials by nitrogenous impurities is a major problem that can bias the quantification of ammonia in photocatalytic N₂ fixation reactions. In this work, SrTiO₃ nanocubes were prepared by using a nitrogenous precursor and engineered with Ti³⁺ sites and oxygen vacancy defects in a one-step solvothermal approach. It was observed that the synthesized materials were containing surface nitrogenous impurities and therefore a rigorous cleaning procedure was adopted to eliminate them to the best extent. The contribution of unavoidable surface impurities was deduced in the form of adventitious NH₃ by employing control experiments and a realistic photocatalytic NH₃ generation was achieved. It was found that pristine SrTiO₃ showed no photocatalytic activity, whereas one of the defected SrTiO₃ materials showed the highest NH₃ formation under natural sunlight in pure water, which was ascribed to the tuned defect sites, enhanced surface area and efficient separation of photogenerated charges. Based on the experimental results, a stringent protocol has been suggested for materials synthesis while working with nitrogenous precursors and for subsequent photocatalytic N₂ fixation experiments. Thus, the present study provides a simple and affordable procedure for catalyst synthesis for the studied application and expands the scope of perovskite oxide materials to fabricate efficient photocatalysts for sustainable NH₃ production.

Defect-Modified nano-BaTiO3 as a Sonosensitizer for Rapid and High-Efficiency Sonodynamic Sterilization

Multidrug-resistant bacteria caused by the unlimited overuse of antibiotics pose a great challenge to global health. An antibacterial method based on reactive oxygen species (ROS) is one of the effective strategies without inducing bacterial resistance. Owing to the ability of generating ROS, piezocatalytic material-mediated sonodynamic therapy (SDT) has drawn much attention. However, its major challenge is the low ROS generation efficiency in the piezocatalytic process due to the poor charge carrier concentration of piezoelectric materials. Vacancy engineering can regulate the charge density and largely promote ROS generation under ultrasound (US) irradiation. Herein, a US-responsive self-doped barium titanate with controlled oxygen vacancy (Vo) concentrations was successfully synthesized through a facile thermal reduction treatment at different temperatures (i.e., 350, 400, and 450 °C), and the corresponding samples were named as BTO-350, BTO-400, and BTO-450, respectively. Then, the effect of Vo concentrations on ROS generation efficiency during the piezocatalytic process was systematically studied. And BTO-400 was found to possess the highest piezocatalytic activity and excellent sonodynamic antibacterial performance against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Furthermore, its antibacterial mechanism was confirmed that the ROS generated under US could damage bacterial cell membrane and cause considerable leakage of cytoplasmic components and irreversible death of bacteria. Notably, the in vivo results illustrated that the BTO-400 could serve as an effective antibacterial agent and accelerate skin healing via SDT therapy. In all, the Vo defect-modified nano-BaTiO₃ has a noticeable potential to induce a rapid and efficient sterilization as well as skin tissue repair by SDT.

Precursor-Led Grain Boundary Engineering for Superior Thermoelectric Performance in Niobium Strontium Titanate

We present a novel method to significantly enhance the thermoelectric performance of ceramics in the model system SrTi_0.85Nb_0.15O₃ through the use of the precursor ammonium tetrathiomolybdate (0.5-2% w/w additions). After sintering the precursor-infused green body at 1700 K for 24 h in 5% H₂/Ar, single-crystal-like electron transport behavior developed with electrical conductivity reaching ∼3000 S/cm at ∼300 K, almost a magnitude higher than that in the control sample. During processing, the precursor transformed into MoS₂, then into MoO_x, and finally into Mo particles. This limited grain growth promoted secondary phase generation but importantly helped to reduce the grain boundary barriers. Samples prepared with additions of the precursor exhibited vastly increased electrical conductivity, without significant impact on Seebeck coefficients giving rise to high power factor values of 1760 μW/mK² at ∼300 K and a maximum thermoelectric figure-of-merit zT of 0.24 at 823 K. This processing strategy provides a simple method to achieve high charge mobility in polycrystalline titanate and related materials and with the potential to create "phonon-glass-electron-crystal" oxide thermoelectric materials.

Synergistic Effect of Sr-O Divacancy and Exposing Facets in SrTiO3 Micro/Nano Particle: Accelerating Exciton Formation and Splitting, Highly Efficient Co2+ Photooxidation

As a typical perovskite-type crystal, polyhedral strontium titanate (SrTiO₃ ) has shown anisotropic charge transport behavior in recent studies, however, the carrier transportation and transition of which has not been explained very clearly. This work present the existence of Sr and O divacancies in the novel rhombicuboctahedron SrTiO₃ micro/nano particles (Sr_{1- x} TiO_{3- x} /TiO_{2- x} ) with exposing (100), (110) and (111) facets and the diameter of 300-700 nm synthesized via hydrothermal synthesis, and also summarizes the dissociation mechanism of self-trapped excitons (STEs) caused by the divacancy and facet effect. In addition, most importantly, the metastable STEs with ultra-low binding energy (E_b  < 3 meV) under illumination are discovered. Combining the model of S-scheme heterojunction, a conversion mechanism of photoinduced carriers is proposed. The photocatalytic reaction of Co²⁺ is used as the probe reaction, and the unique Sr_{1- x} TiO_{3- x} /TiO_{2- x} possesses a high photooxidation efficiency of Co²⁺ , by which 70.3% of Co²⁺ is oxidized to Co³⁺ (CoOOH) in 5 min. This finding may provide a guideline for an optimal design of the photocatalytic materials for the recovery and extraction of metal ions based on SrTiO₃ .

Transition Metal Doping Induces Ti3+ to Promote the Performance of SrTiO3 @TiO2 Visible Light Photocatalytic Reduction of CO2 to Prepare C1 Product

Transition metal Fe, Co, Ni and Cu doped strontium titanate-rich SrTiO₃ @TiO₂ (STO@T) materials were prepared by hydrothermal method. The prepared doped materials exhibit better photocatalytic CO₂ reduction to CH₄ ability under visible light conditions. Among them, Fe-doped and undoped SrTiO₃ @TiO₂ under visible light conditions CO₂ reduction products only CO, while M-STO@T (M=Co, Ni, Cu) samples converted CO₂ to CH₄ . The average methane yield of Ni-doped STO@T samples are as high as 73.85 μmol g^-1  h^-1 . The production of methane is mainly due to the increase in the response of the doped samples to visible light. And the increase in the separation rate of photogenerated electrons and holes and the efficiency of electron transport caused by the generation of impurity levels. The impurity level caused by Ti³⁺ plays an important role in the production of methane by CO₂ visible light reduction. Ni doping effectively improves the photocatalytic performance of STO@T and CO₂ reduction mechanism were explained.

Revealing the Dynamics of the Thermal Reaction between Copper and Mixed Halide Perovskite Solar Cells

Copper (Cu) is present not only in the electrode for inverted-structure halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) but also in transport layers such as copper iodide (CuI), copper thiocyanate (CuSCN), and copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) alternatives to spiro-OMeTAD due to their improved thermal stability. While Cu or Cu-incorporated materials have been effectively utilized in halide perovskites, there is a lack of thorough investigation on the direct reaction between Cu and a perovskite under thermal stress. In this study, we investigated the thermal reaction between Cu and a perovskite as well as the degradation mechanism by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). The results show that high temperatures of 100 °C induce Cu to be incorporated into the perovskite lattice by forming "Cu-rich yet organic A-site-poor" perovskites, (Cu_xA_1-x)PbX₃, near the grain boundaries, which result in device performance degradation.

Insight into the effect of OH modification on the piezo-photocatalytic hydrogen production activity of SrTiO3

Surface modification by hydrophilic functional group have a tremendous influence on the catalytic activity of photocatalyst, however, there are few reports on improving piezoelectric catalytic performance through surface functionalization. Herein, OH-modified SrTiO₃ was successfully obtained via a novel low-temperature solid-state precursor method and employed as a catalyst for photocatalytic, piezocatalytic and piezo-photocatalytic hydrogen production. Thanks to the super hydrophilic that is facilitating the contact of catalyst and water molecular and the more oxygen vacancies that can promote electron-hole separation, the photocatalytic, piezocatalytic and piezo-photocatalytic hydrogen generation of OH-modified SrTiO₃ (OH-STO) is about two times higher than pristine SrTiO₃ (STO). It is worth mentioning that the optimal piezo-photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of OH-STO (701.2 µmol h^-1 g^-1) is 5.3 times higher than the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution process of STO. This study presents a low-energy approach to the rational design of functional group modification nanomaterials that possess excellent piezo-photocatalytic performance.

The equilibrium relationship between the charge transfer and gas evolution capacities of reasonable size Al-STO nanoparticles induces the balance point of HER and OER half-reactions.

Efficient Near-Infrared-Activated Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution from Ammonia Borane with Core-Shell Upconversion-Semiconductor Hybrid Nanostructures

In this work, the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from ammonia borane under near-infrared laser irradiation at ambient temperature was demonstrated by using the novel core-shell upconversion-semiconductor hybrid nanostructures (NaGdF4:Yb3+/Er3+@NaGdF4@Cu2O). The particles were successfully synthesized in a final concentration of 10 mg/mL. The particles were characterized via high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), photoluminescence, energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX), and powder X-ray diffraction. The near-infrared-driven photocatalytic activities of such hybrid nanoparticles are remarkably higher than that with bare upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) under the same irradiation. The upconverted photoluminescence of UCNPs efficiently reabsorbed by Cu2O promotes the charge separation in the semiconducting shell, and facilitates the formation of photoinduced electrons and hydroxyl radicals generated via the reaction between H2O and holes. Both serve as reactive species on the dissociation of the weak B-N bond in an aqueous medium, to produce hydrogen under near-infrared excitation, resulting in enhanced photocatalytic activities. The photocatalyst of NaGdF4:Yb3+/Er3+@NaGdF4@Cu2O (UCNPs@Cu2O) suffered no loss of efficacy after several cycles. This work sheds light on the rational design of near-infrared-activated photocatalysts, and can be used as a proof-of-concept for on-board hydrogen generation from ammonia borane under near-infrared illumination, with the aim of green energy suppliers.

Donor Bandgap Engineering without Sacrificing the Reduction Ability of Photogenerated Electrons in Crystalline Carbon Nitride

Crystalline carbon nitride (CCN) with a light response up to 700 nm has been seldom reported but is significant for the artificial photocatalysis. In this study, it is proposed that, unlike acceptors, introducing donors can effectively narrow the bandgap without sacrificing the reduction ability of photogenerated electrons, which is more advantageous to photocatalytic reduction reactions. Hence, a series of heptazine-based K⁺ -implanted CCN (KCN) with a narrow bandgap (2.87-1.86 eV) are constructed by copolymerization of pyrimidine donors. The optimized photocatalysts can extend the light response to 700 nm and account for approximately 122- and 33-fold enhancements in H₂ production (λ>500 nm) in comparison to CN and KCN, respectively. The apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) can reach 8.2 % at 500 nm and is comparable to the top-level CN- and CCN- based materials. Its photoactive wavelength has significant advantages over previously reported CCN-based photocatalysts. This method offers a universal donor bandgap engineering strategy towards photocatalytic reduction reactions.

Zr-Al co-doped SrTiO3 with suppressed charge recombination for efficient photocatalytic overall water splitting

Zr-Al co-doped SrTiO₃ with reduced Ti³⁺ concentration demonstrates more than 2 times enhancement compared with Al-doped SrTiO₃ in photocatalytic overall water splitting. Systematic studies reveal that the co-doping of Zr⁴⁺ can reduce the substitution of Ti⁴⁺ by Al³⁺ and effectively suppress the formation of charge carrier recombination centers (Ti³⁺).

Atomic-Level and Modulated Interfaces of Photocatalyst Heterostructure Constructed by External Defect-Induced Strategy: A Critical Review

Despite the existence of numerous photocatalyst heterostructures, their separation efficiency and charge flow precision remain low due to the poor study on interfacial properties. The photocatalysts with confined defects can effectively control the photogenerated carrier migration, but the metastability of such defects considerably decreases the photocatalyst stability. Meanwhile, the introduction of defective region can increase the coordinative unsaturation and delocalize local electrons to promote their interactions with the molecules/ions in that region. The selective growth of modulated heterogeneous interface by defect-induced strategy may not only increase the stability of defective structures, but also enhance the migration of interfacial charges. Using this method, photocatalytic heterostructures with low contact resistances and intimate interfaces are constructed to achieve the optimal charge migration in terms of efficiency and accuracy. In this work, the point, linear, and planar heterogeneous interfaces and related defect engineering techniques are discussed. Particularly, it is focused on the external, defect-induced interfacial heterogeneities with various spatial and dimensional configurations, which exhibit modulated and controllable interfacial properties. Furthermore, the main aspects of fabricating photocatalyst heterostructures by the defect-induced strategy, including the i) controllable generation of defects, ii) advanced characterization methods, and iii) elaborate construction of the minimal interface, are described.

Synthesis of SrTiO3 submicron cubes with simultaneous and competitive photocatalytic activity for H2O splitting and CO2 reduction

Single crystalline strontium titanate (SrTiO3) submicron cubes have been synthesized based on a molten salt method. The submicron cubes showed superior photocatalytic activity towards both water splitting and carbon dioxide reduction, in which methane (CH4) and hydrogen (H2) were simultaneously produced. The average production rate of methane up to 8 h is 4.39 μmol g-1 h-1 but drops to 0.46 μmol g-1 h-1. However, the average production rate of hydrogen is 14.52 before 8 h but then increases to 120.23 μmol g-1 h-1 after 8 h. The rate change of the two processes confirms the competition between the H2O splitting and CO2 reduction reactions. Band structure and surface characteristics of the SrTiO3 submicron cubes were characterized by diffuse reflective UV-Vis spectroscopy, Mott-Schottky analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results reveal that the simultaneous and competitive production of methane and hydrogen is due to a thermodynamics factor, as well as the competition between the adsorption of carbon dioxide and water molecules on the surface of the faceted SrTiO3. This work demonstrates that SrTiO3 photocatalysts are efficient in producing sustainable fuels via water splitting and carbon dioxide reduction reactions.

The high photocatalytic efficiency and stability of LaNiO3/g-C3N4 heterojunction nanocomposites for photocatalytic water splitting to hydrogen

A binary direct Z-scheme LaNiO₃/g-C₃N₄ nanocomposite photocatalyst consisted with LaNiO₃ nanoparticles and g-C₃N₄ nanosheets was successfully synthesized by means of mechanical mixing and solvothermal methods in order to improve the photocatalytic water splitting activity. The as-prepared materials were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron microscope (SEM), Transmission Electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and N₂ adsorption–desorption experiments, respectively, demonstrating the formation of interfacial interaction and heterogeneous structure in LaNiO₃/g-C₃N₄ nanocomposites. Under UV-light irradiation, the LaNiO₃/g-C₃N₄ samples which without the addition of any noble metal as co-catalyst behaved enhanced photocatalytic water splitting activity compared with pure LaNiO₃ and g-C₃N₄, owing to the Z-scheme charge carrier transfer pathway. Especially, the LaNiO₃/70%g-C₃N₄ nanocomposite reach an optimal yield of up to 3392.50 µmol g⁻¹ in 5 h and held a maximum H₂ evolution rate of 678.5 µmol h⁻¹ g⁻¹ that was 5 times higher than that of pure LaNiO₃.

Enhanced piezoelectric-induced catalysis of SrTiO3 nanocrystal with well-defined facets under ultrasonic vibration

Facet engineering of nanocomposite has been confirmed to be an efficient strategy to accelerate their catalytic performances, but to improve their piezoelectric catalytic activities by facet engineering has been seldom reported. Herein, we developed a series of SrTiO₃ nanocrystals with exposed {0 0 1} facet, dominant {1 1 0} facet and co-exposed {0 0 1} and {1 1 0} facets, respectively, and firstly revealed its piezoelectric catalytic performance under ultrasonic vibration. Moreover, the relationship between piezoelectric-induced catalytic activity and facet-dependence of SrTiO₃ nanocrystal was disclosed for the first time. The SrTiO₃ nanocrystal with co-exposed {0 0 1} and {1 1 0} facets exhibited effectively enhanced piezoelectric catalytic activity by degrading Rhodamine B (RhB) under ultrasonic vibration, as compared to that of SrTiO₃ nanocrystals with exposed {0 0 1} facet and dominant {1 1 0} facet, respectively. In addition, trapping experiments and active species quantitative experiments confirmed that the co-exposed {0 0 1} and {1 1 0} facets were beneficial to produce O₂^- and OH with the generation rates of 8.3 and 132.2 μmol g^-1 h^-1, respectively. The OH radical played a dominant role in piezoelectric catalytic process. Finally, the piezoelectric catalysis mechanism of SrTiO₃ surface heterojunction was proposed based on a DFT study. This study presents an in-depth understanding of piezoelectric-induced catalytic of perovskite nanocrystals with exposed well-defined facets.

Construction of Defective Zinc-Cadmium-Sulfur Nanorods for Visible-Light-Driven Hydrogen Evolution Without the Use of Sacrificial Agents or Cocatalysts

Solar-driven H₂ evolution is an essential process for sustainable energy development. Currently, the greatest challenge is the development of efficient photocatalysts to drive this reaction, especially in pure water systems (without the use of a sacrificial agent). In this study, structural defects in Zn-Cd-S nanorod photocatalysts are found to increase charge separation efficiency significantly by sevenfold. Efficient H₂ evolution (352.7 μmol h^-1  g^-1 , 100 mg of catalyst) is achieved by using this defective Zn-Cd-S nanorod photocatalyst in the absence of sacrificial agents and precious metal cocatalysts under visible-light irradiation. Thus, this cocatalyst- and sacrificial-agent-free, visible-light-responsive system shows remarkable potential as a new artificial photosynthesis route for green H₂ production.

Donor-Acceptor Cyanocarbazole-Based Supramolecular Photocatalysts for Visible-Light-Driven H2 Production

Highly efficient, stable, and metal-free supramolecular photocatalysts for H₂ production are uncommon and of significant interest. In this study, a donor-acceptor (D-A) cyanocarbazole-based supramolecule (2CzPN) is assembled by intermolecular C≡N⋅⋅⋅H-Ar H-bonding interactions to form an efficient, stable, and metal-free photocatalyst for H₂ evolution. The catalyst affords an H₂ production rate of 91.8 μmol h^-1 (20 mg of samples, λ>420 nm) and a corresponding apparent quantum efficiency of 7.5 % at 420 nm. The photon-generated carrier separation of the 2CzPN supramolecule, which is higher than that of the analogous polymer, can be attributed to the strong D-A characteristics and high crystallinity. This study offers the first experimental evidence of visible-light H₂ evolution among D-A cyanocarbazole-based supramolecules and it enriches the variety of supramolecular photocatalysts. This stable and effective metal-free 2CzPN supramolecular photocatalyst has obvious advantages among very few supramolecular photocatalysts for H₂ production.

Intrinsically Activated SrTiO3: Photocatalytic H2 Evolution from Neutral Aqueous Methanol Solution in the Absence of Any Noble Metal Cocatalyst

Noble metal cocatalysts are conventionally a crucial factor in oxide-semiconductor-based photocatalytic hydrogen generation. In the present work, we show that optimized high-temperature hydrogenation of commercially available strontium titanate (SrTiO₃) powder can be used to engineer an intrinsic cocatalytic shell around nanoparticles that can create a photocatalyst that is highly effective without the use of any additional cocatalyst for hydrogen generation from neutral aqueous methanol solutions. This intrinsic activation effect can also be observed for SrTiO₃[100] single crystal as well as Nb-doped SrTiO₃[100] single crystal. For all types of SrTiO₃ samples (nanopowders and either of the single crystals), hydrogenation under optimum conditions leads to a surface-hydroxylated layer together with lattice defects visible by transmission electron microscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and photoluminescence (PL). Active samples provide specific defects identified by EPR, PL, and electron-energy loss spectroscopy as Ti³⁺ states in a defective matrix-this is in contrast to the inactive defects formed in other reductive atmospheres. In aqueous media, active SrTiO₃ samples show a significant negative shift of the flatband potential (in photoelectrochemical as well as in capacitance data) and a lower charge-transfer resistance for photoexcited electrons. We therefore ascribe the remarkable cocatalyst-free activation of the material to a synergy between thermodynamics (altered interface energetics induced by hydroxylation) and kinetics (charge transfer mediation by suitable Ti³⁺ states).

Promoting Photocatalytic Overall Water Splitting by Controlled Magnesium Incorporation in SrTiO3 Photocatalysts

SrTiO₃ is a well-known photocatalyst inducing overall water splitting when exposed to UV irradiation of wavelengths <370 nm. However, the apparent quantum efficiency of SrTiO₃ is typically low, even when functionalized with nanoparticles of Pt or Ni@NiO. Here, we introduce a simple solid-state preparation method to control the incorporation of magnesium into the perovskite structure of SrTiO₃ . After deposition of Pt or Ni@NiO, the photocatalytic water-splitting efficiency of the Mg:SrTiO_x composites is up to 20 times higher compared to SrTiO₃ containing similar catalytic nanoparticles, and an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 10 % can be obtained in the wavelength range of 300-400 nm. Detailed characterization of the Mg:SrTiO_x composites revealed that Mg is likely substituting the tetravalent Ti ion, leading to a favorable surface-space-charge layer. This originates from tuning of the donor density in the cubic SrTiO₃ structure by Mg incorporation and enables high oxygen-evolution rates. Nevertheless, interfacing with an appropriate hydrogen evolution catalyst is mandatory and non-trivial to obtain high-performance in water splitting.

Highly Efficient and Exceptionally Durable CO2 Photoreduction to Methanol over Freestanding Defective Single-Unit-Cell Bismuth Vanadate Layers

Unearthing an ideal model for disclosing the role of defect sites in solar CO₂ reduction remains a great challenge. Here, freestanding gram-scale single-unit-cell o-BiVO₄ layers are successfully synthesized for the first time. Positron annihilation spectrometry and X-ray fluorescence unveil their distinct vanadium vacancy concentrations. Density functional calculations reveal that the introduction of vanadium vacancies brings a new defect level and higher hole concentration near Fermi level, resulting in increased photoabsorption and superior electronic conductivity. The higher surface photovoltage intensity of single-unit-cell o-BiVO₄ layers with rich vanadium vacancies ensures their higher carriers separation efficiency, further confirmed by the increased carriers lifetime from 74.5 to 143.6 ns revealed by time-resolved fluorescence emission decay spectra. As a result, single-unit-cell o-BiVO₄ layers with rich vanadium vacancies exhibit a high methanol formation rate up to 398.3 μmol g^-1 h^-1 and an apparent quantum efficiency of 5.96% at 350 nm, much larger than that of single-unit-cell o-BiVO₄ layers with poor vanadium vacancies, and also the former's catalytic activity proceeds without deactivation even after 96 h. This highly efficient and spectrally stable CO₂ photoconversion performances hold great promise for practical implementation of solar fuel production.
