Abstract
l-Guluronic acid is integral to the structures of alginates and to the pathogenesis of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The exploitation of this hexose in both existing and new contexts is, however, limited by its prohibitively high commercial cost. We report on a short and efficient synthetic route to an l-GulA building block from a simple d-mannose thioglycoside. In this synthesis, the fluorine-directing effect is exploited to achieve a stereoselective C-5 epimerization. DFT calculations illuminate the substituent effects, which operate to confer this selectivity.

Abstract
Ferrier photobromination enables direct synthetic access to valuable 5-C-bromosugars but has limitations that restrict its broader use. The reaction is typically conducted in CCl4 heated at reflux with irradiation by broad spectrum, energy-inefficient heat lamps. Herein, we demonstrate that the reaction proceeds rapidly and efficiently with PhCF3 as a safe and environmentally benign alternative to CCl4 at mild temperatures (≤40 °C) inside a compact photoreactor fitted with purple light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

Abstract
A safe and operationally simple protocol for the preparation of β-d-glycosyl fluorides is presented. We demonstrate that a precise combination of XtalFluor-M, N-bromosuccinimide, and Et3N·3HF can mediate facile, high-yielding, and diastereoselective conversions of 2-O-acyl thioglycosides to β-d- and other 1,2-trans glycosyl fluorides. The key roles of these reagents are dissected in this work, as is the impact of their interplay on the fluorination stereoselectivity.

Abstract
In this research the sequential generation and cyclization of N-alkoxyaminyl radicals to produce 1-azaspiro[4.4]nonane, a prominent scaffold in organic and medicinal chemistry, was studied. Competition experiments in benzene at 80 °C with brominated oxime ethers using Bu3SnH as chain transfer and AIBN as the initiator generated vinyl or aryl radicals which were captured by oxime ethers, allowing approximate 5-exo-trig cyclization constants at 4.6 × 108 s-1 and 9.9 × 108 s-1 respectively to be established. Similar results were obtained by kinetic studies using the transition state theory (TST) from ab initio calculations with density functional theory (DFT) using the M06-2X, B3LYP, mPW1PW91 and TPSSh functionals in combination with the 6-311+G(d, p) basis set. Additionally, it was found that the 5-exo-trig cyclization of the N-alkoxyaminyl radical onto CC double bonds is a reversible process whose constants were determined to be in the range of 6.2 × 100 s-1 and 3.5 × 106 s-1 at 80 °C, depending on the nature of the substituents. The calculation of the radical stabilization energy (RSE) shows that the N-alkoxyaminyl radical is a very stable species and its reactivity in the addition on alkenes is governed by its nucleophilic character and the stability of the carbon-centered radical formed after cyclization. The reduction constant of the N-alkoxyaminyl radical with Bu3SnH in the gas phase at 80 °C was also estimated to be 3.4 × 100 M-1 s-1 through computational calculations. This information facilitates the rational planning of cascades and other methodologies applied to the construction of carbocyclic and aza-heterocyclic compounds.

Abstract
Over the years, carbohydrates have increasingly become an important class of compounds contributing significantly to the target specific drug discovery and vaccine development. Several oligosaccharides contain L-hexoses that are biologically relevant as therapeutic and diagnostic tools. Since, L-hexoses and deoxy L-hexoses are not readily available in large amount and pure form, attention is drawn towards development of cost effective and high yielding synthetic routes for their procurement. In this review we give an update on the recent developments in strategies for synthesis of L-hexoses and deoxy L-hexoses.

Abstract
The complex sulfation motifs of heparan sulfate glycosaminoglycans (HS GAGs) play critical roles in many important biological processes. However, an understanding of their specific functions has been hampered by an inability to synthesize large numbers of diverse, yet defined, HS structures. Herein, we describe a new approach to access the four core disaccharides required for HS/heparin oligosaccharide assembly from natural polysaccharides. The use of disaccharides rather than monosaccharides as minimal precursors greatly accelerates the synthesis of HS GAGs, providing key disaccharide and tetrasaccharide intermediates in about half the number of steps compared to traditional strategies. Rapid access to such versatile intermediates will enable the generation of comprehensive libraries of sulfated oligosaccharides for unlocking the "sulfation code" and understanding the roles of specific GAG structures in physiology and disease.
