Multiple Chirality Switching of a Dye-Grafted Helical Polymer Film Driven by Acid & Base

A stimuli-responsive multiple chirality switching material, which can regulate opposed chiral absorption characteristics, has great application value in the fields of optical modulation, information storage and encryption, etc. However, due to the rareness of effective functional systems and the complexity of material structures, developing this type of material remains an insurmountable challenge. Herein, a smart polymer film with multiple chirality inversion properties was fabricated efficiently based on a newly-designed acid & base-sensitive dye-grafted helical polymer. Benefited from the cooperative effects of various weak interactions (hydrogen bonds, electrostatic interaction, etc.) under the aggregated state, this polymer film exhibited a promising acid & base-driven multiple chirality inversion property containing record switchable chiral states (up to five while the solution showed three-state switching) and good reversibility. The creative exploration of such a multiple chirality switching material can not only promote the application progress of current chiroptical regulation technology, but also provide a significant guidance for the design and synthesis of future smart chiroptical switching materials and devices.

Boron-containing helicenes as new generation of chiral materials: opportunities and challenges of leaving the flatland

Increased interest in chiral functional dyes has stimulated activity in the field of boron-containing helicenes over the past few years. Despite the fact that the introduction of boron endows π-conjugated scaffolds with attractive electronic and optical properties, boron helicenes have long remained underdeveloped compared to other helicenes containing main group elements. The main reason was the lack of reliable synthetic protocols to access these scaffolds. The construction of boron helicenes proceeds against steric strain, and thus the methods developed for planar systems have sometimes proven ineffective in their synthesis. Recent advances in the general boron chemistry and the synthesis of strained derivatives have opened the way to a wide variety of boron-containing helicenes. Although the number of helically chiral derivatives is still limited, these compounds are currently at the forefront of emissive materials for circularly-polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs). Yet the design of good emitters is not a trivial task. In this perspective, we discuss a number of requirements that must be met to provide an excellent emissive material. These include chemical and configurational stability, emission quantum yields, luminescence dissymmetry factors, and color purity. Understanding of these parameters and some structure-property relationships should aid in the rational design of superior boron helicenes. We also present the main achievements in their synthesis and point out niches in this area, e.g. stereoselective synthesis, necessary to accelerate the development of this fascinating class of compounds and to realize their potential in OLED devices and in other fields.

Linker-dependent control of the chiroptical properties of polymethylene-vaulted trans-bis[(β-iminomethyl)naphthoxy]platinum(II) complexes

The effects of polymethylene bridges on the chiroptical properties of trans-bis[(β-iminomethyl)naphthoxy]platinum(II) platforms were examined both experimentally and theoretically using newly designed planar chiral Pt analogues (1) having three-dimensional superstructures. A series of optically pure polymethylene-vaulted Pt complexes (R)- and (S)-1 were synthesized and characterized with regard to the chiroptical behaviour of the trans-bis[(β-iminomethyl)naphthoxy]platinum(II) platforms. These complexes were found to exhibit structure-dependent chiroptical characteristics in solution, such that the absolute values of specific rotation, the circular dichroism dissymmetry factor (gabs) and the circularly polarized luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum) all increased upon shortening the polymethylene bridges. Density functional theory and time dependent density functional theory calculations were used to analyse vaulted and non-vaulted complexes, which demonstrated that the present linker-dependent chiroptical properties resulted from constraint-induced changes in the square planar Pt coordination centres rather than from chiral distortion along the coordination platforms.

Recent Advances of Chiral Isolated and Small Organic Molecules: Structure and Properties for Circularly Polarized Luminescence

This paper explores recent advancements in the field of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) exhibited by small and isolated organic molecules. The development and application of small CPL molecule are systematically reviewed through eight different chiral skeleton sections. Investigating the intricate interplay between molecular structure and CPL properties, the paper aims at providing and enlighting novel strategies for CPL-based applications.

A Chirally Locked Bis-perylene Diimide Macrocycle: Consequences for Chiral Self-Assembly and Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Macrocycles containing chiral organic dyes are highly valuable for the development of supramolecular circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) materials, where a preorganized chiral framework is conducive to directing π-π self-assembly and delivering a strong and persistent CPL signal. Here, perylene diimides (PDIs) are an excellent choice for the organic dye component because, alongside their tunable photophysical and self-assembly properties, functionalization of the PDI's core yields a twisted, chiral π-system, capable of CPL. However, configurationally stable PDI-based macrocycles are rare, and those that are also capable of π-π self-assembly beyond dimers are unprecedented, both of which are advantageous for robust self-assembled chiroptical materials. In this work, we report the first bay-connected bis-PDI macrocycle that is configurationally stable (ΔG⧧ > 155 kJ mol-1). We use this chirally locked macrocycle to uncover new knowledge of chiral PDI self-assembly and to perform new quantitative CPL imaging of the resulting single-crystal materials. As such, we discover that the chirality of a 1,7-disubstituted PDI provides a rational route to designing H-, J- and concomitant H- and J-type self-assembled materials, important arrangements for optimizing (chir)optical and charge/energy transport properties. Indeed, we reveal that CPL is amplified in the single crystals of our chiral macrocycle by quantifying the degree of emitted light circular polarization from such materials for the first time using CPL-Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy.

Circularly Polarized Luminescence from Schiff-base [4]Helicene Boron Complexes

Boron complexes with Schiff-base [4]helicene ligands were synthesized. These complexes were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and their helical molecular structures were unequivocally established by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The helical boron complexes exhibited efficient photoluminescence under UV irradiation, and the circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties were investigated for optically pure samples. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted to further understand their photophysical properties including chiroptical responses.

Chiroptical Response Control of Planar and Axially Chiral Polymethylene-Vaulted Platinum(II) Complexes Bearing 1,1'-Binaphthyl Frameworks

In this study, the synthesis, structure, and chiroptical response control of planar chiral polymethylene-vaulted trans-bis[(β-iminomethyl)aryloxy]platinum(II) complexes bearing axially chiral 1,1'-binaphthyl ligands are described. A series of enantiopure polymethylene (n = 4-10)-vaulted complexes were prepared in 6 steps using commercially available (R)- or (S)-BINOL as the starting material without an optical resolution process. The trans-coordination and three-dimensional vaulted structures of the platinum complexes were elucidated from X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. The complexes were found to show structural dependence of chiroptical responses in the dilute solution state such that the absolute values of [α]D, dissymmetry factors gabs in circular dichroism (CD), and glum in circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) increased upon shortening the length of the polymethylene bridges. The enhanced chiroptical responses were theoretically investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations, and the results are discussed in terms of the molecular structures and transition dipole moments of the ground states. The structural dependence of the chiroptical responses was ascribed to the distortion of the coordination platforms caused by restriction of the vaulting methylene linkers.

Circularly polarized luminescence in molecular recognition systems: Recent achievements

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) dyes are recognized to be new generation materials and have been actively developed. Molecular recognition systems provide nice approaches to novel CPL materials, such as stimuli-responsive switches and chemical sensing materials. CPL may be induced simply by mixing chiral or achiral, luminescent or nonluminescent host and guest; there are several combinations. Molecular recognition can potentially save time and effort to construct well-ordered chiral structures with noncovalent attractive interactions as compared with the multi-step synthesis of covalently bonded dyes. It is a challenging subject to engage molecular recognition events with CPL, and it is important and interesting to see how it is achieved. In fact, simple molecular recognition systems can even enable the fine adjustment of CPL performance and detailed conformational/configurational analysis of the excited state. Here we overview the recent achievements of simple host-guest complexes capable of exhibiting CPL, summarizing concisely the host/guest structures, CPL intensities, and characteristics.

Enhanced Optical Properties of Azaborole Helicenes by Lateral and Helical Extension

The synthesis and characterization of laterally extended azabora[5]-, -[6]- and -[7]helicenes, assembled from N-heteroaromatic and dibenzo[g,p]chrysene building blocks is described. Formally, the π-conjugated systems of the pristine azaborole helicenes were enlarged with a phenanthrene unit leading to compounds with large Stokes shifts, significantly enhanced luminescence quantum yields (Φ) and dissymmetry factors (g_lum ). The beneficial effect on optical properties was also observed for helical elongation. The combined contributions of lateral and helical extensions resulted in a compound showing green emission with Φ of 0.31 and |g_lum | of 2.2×10^-3 , highest within the series of π-extended azaborahelicenes and superior to emission intensity and chiroptical response of its non-extended congener. This study shows that helical and lateral extensions of π-conjugated systems are viable strategies to improve features of azaborole helicenes. In addition, single crystal X-ray analysis of configurationally stable [6]- and -[7]helicenes was used to provide insight into their packing arrangements.

Triple Regioselective Functionalization of Cationic [4]Helicenes via Iridium-Catalyzed Borylation and Suzuki Cross-Coupling Reactivity

In essentially one-pot, using Ir- and Pd-catalysis, tris(arene)-functionalized cationic [4]helicenes are synthesized with full regioselectivity and enantiospecificity starting from a trivial precursor (17 examples). This poly-addition of aryl groups improves key optical properties, that is, fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes. Electronic circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence signatures are observed up to the far-red domain, in particular with additional arenes prone to aggregation.

This review surveys recent progress in the chemistry of polycyclic heteroaromatic molecules with a focus on structural diversity and synthetic methodology. Circularly polarized luminescence of Eu(III) complexes with chiral 1,1'-bi-2-naphtol-derived bisphosphate ligands

The interest for lanthanide circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has been quickly growing for 10 years. However, very few of these studies have involved correlation between the dissymmetry factor (g_lum ) and the chemical modifications in a series of chiral ligands. Four polymeric compounds of Eu(III) were prepared by using a series of binaphtyl derivatives for which the size of the π system as well as the number of stereogenic elements (i.e., the binaphtyl moiety) are modulated. The resulting {[Eu(hfac)₃ ((S)/(R)-L^x )]}_n (x = 1 and 3) and {[Eu(hfac)₃ ((S,S,S)/(R,R,R)-L^x )]}_n (x = 2 and 4) have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction by comparison with the X-ray structures on single crystal of the Dy(III) analogs. In solution, the structure of the complexes is deeply modified and becomes monomeric. The nature of the ligand induces change in the shape of the CPL spectra in CH₂ Cl₂ solution. Furthermore, a large |g_lum | = 0.12 of the magnetic-dipole transition for the [Eu(hfac)₃ ((S,S,S)/(R,R,R)-L² )] complex involving the ligand with three stereogenic elements and an extended 𝜋 system has been measured. This report also shows CPL measurements in solid state for the series of {[Eu(hfac)₃ ((S)/(R)-L^x )]}_n (x = 1 and 3) and {[Eu(hfac)₃ ((S,S,S)/(R,R,R)-L^x )]}_n (x = 2 and 4) polymers.

Multi-Light-Responsive Upconversion-and-Downshifting-Based Circularly Polarized Luminescent Switches in Chiral Metal-Organic Frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted tremendous attention for several novel applications. However, functional MOFs with light-responsive circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) are not examined in detail. Therefore, a dual CPL switch exhibiting both upconversion (UC) and downshifting (DS) CPL in the solid state is constructed by loading a luminescent diarylethene derivative (DAEC) and UC nanoparticles (UCNPs) into chiral MOFs. The chiral MOF⊃DAEC composites exhibit both photoswitchable luminescence and DS-CPL properties under alternating UV and visible light irradiation. Additionally, a reversible UC-CPL switch is realized using near-infrared (NIR) and visible light irradiation by introducing energy-level-matched UCNPs and DAEC into the chiral MOFs. The dissymmetry factor (g_lum ) of UC-CPL is noted to be significantly amplified through energy transfer compared to that of DS-CPL, which indicates that the information on circular polarization can be manipulated by altering the incident light. A chiroptical logic circuit with a 2D information output is designed with UV, visible, and NIR light as inputs by setting a rational threshold.

Heterohelicenes through 1,3-Dipolar Cycloaddition of Sydnones with Arynes: Synthesis, Origins of Selectivity, and Application to pH-Triggered Chiroptical Switch with CPL Sign Reversal

Regioselective access to heterohelicenes through the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of sydnones with arynes is described. Novel access to sydnones and poly(hetero)aromatic aryne precursors allowed the introduction of chemical diversity over multiple positions of the helical scaffolds. The origins of the unconventional regioselectivity during the cycloaddition steps was systematically investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, unveiling the key features that control this reactivity, namely, face-to-face (π···π) or edge-to-face (C-H···π) interactions, primary orbital interactions and distortion from coplanarity in the transition structures (TSs) of the transformation. From the library of 24 derivatives synthesized, a pyridyl containing derivative displayed reversible, red-shifted, pH-triggered chiroptical switching properties, with CPL-sign reversal. It is found that protonation of the helicene causes a change of the angle between the electric and magnetic dipole moments related to the S₁ → S₀ transition, resulting in this rare case of reversible CPL sign inversion upon application of an external stimulus.

Hybrids of cationic [4]helicene and N-heterocyclic carbene as ligands for complexes exhibiting (chir)optical properties in the far red spectral window

Synthesis, electronic and structural properties of a chiral NHC bearing a N-bonded cationic [4]helicene moiety are reported. This ligand is used to construct Au^I, Au^III and Rh^I complexes exhibiting far-red (chir)optical properties regardless of the metal.

Switchable Circularly Polarized Luminescence in Supramolecular Gels through Photomodulated FRET

While the tremendous deal of efforts has been dedicated to the design and fabrication of materials with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), the development of the chiroptical switch between different CPL signals is one of the important routes toward its application. Here, we prepared a supramolecular gel from the coassemblies containing a chiral gelator (9-fluoren-methoxycarbonyl-functionalized glutamate derivatives, FLG), a fluorescent molecule [(rhodamine B, RhB) or (2',7'-dichlorofluorescein sodium salt, DCF)], and a photochromic molecule [1,2-bis(2,4-dimethyl-5-phenyl-3-thienyl)-3,3,4,4,5,5-hexafluoro-1-cyclopentene, DAE], thus constructing photomodulated switchable CPL soft materials. It was found that FLG could form supramolecular gel in ethanol and self-assemble into left-handed twisted nanostructures. During the formation of a co-gel with RhB (or DCF) and DAE, the chirality of FLG could be effectively transferred to both the fluorescent and photochromic components, which induced them with chiroptical properties including CPL and circular dichroism (CD). DAE undergoes a reversible transition between the achromatous open state and the dark purple closed state in the co-gel under alternating irradiation with UV and visible light. During such a process, an intermolecular Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) behavior from fluorescent RhB to ring-closed DAE caused the emission quenching of RhB, which led to CPL silence of RhB in the co-gel. Subsequent irradiation with visible light caused the restoration of the emission and CPL activity with the restored open state. These changes could be repeated many times upon alternate UV and visible irradiation. Therefore, a reversible CPL switch was fabricated in supramolecular gels through the photomodulated FRET process.

Influence of Positional Isomerism on the Chiroptical Properties of Functional Aromatic Oligoamide Foldamers

A series of functionalized quinoline-based aromatic oligoamide foldamers were prepared in their two enantiomeric forms, comprising an enantiopure terminal camphanyl chiral inducer, which governed the adjacent (P-/M-) helical-handedness. Hierarchical chirality transfer was further investigated in chromophore-appended variants via a range of electronic and vibrational spectroscopic techniques, including circularly polarized luminescence, vibrational circular dichroism and fluorescence. Intense total and polarized photoluminescence (up to Φ_lum =0.39, g_lum =1.5×10^-3 ) was observed in the visible region from these modular multicomponent architectures and a significant influence of positional isomerism was evidenced. The optimal position of a fluorophore substituent on the quinoline hexamers was determined as being position 2 over position 6, as stronger chiroptical features were systematically observed with the 2-positioned derivatives.

Reversible Soft Mechanochemical Control of Biaryl Conformations through Crosslinking in a 3D Macromolecular Network

Tuning the dihedral angle (DA) of axially chiral compounds can impact biological activity, catalyst efficiency, molecular motor performance, or chiroptical properties. Herein, we report gradual, controlled, and reversible changes in molecular conformation of a covalently linked binaphthyl moiety within a 3D polymeric network by application of a macroscopic stretching force. We managed direct observation of DA changes by measuring the circular dichroism signal of an optically pure BINOL-crosslinked elastomer network. Stretching the elastomer resulted in a widening of the DA between naphthyl rings when the BINOL was doubly grafted to the elastomer network; no effect was observed when a single naphthyl ring of the BINOL was grafted to the elastomer network. We have determined that ca. 170 % extension of the elastomers led to the transfer of a mechanical force to the BINOL moiety of 2.5 kcal mol^-1  Å^-1 (ca. 175 pN) in magnitude and results in the opening of the DA of BINOL up to 130°.

Synthesis and properties of chiral fluorescent helicene-BODIPY conjugates

A series of chiral fluorescent helicene-BODIPY conjugates was prepared by the regioselective formylation of aza[4]helicene precursors and then an efficient one-pot two-step BODIPY synthesis (13 examples, 28-82%). Fused conjugates exhibit absorption and fluorescence properties (ΦF 30-45%) in the red visible domain, and a CPL signature could be measured at 605 nm (glum ±5 × 10-4). Photophysical and electronic properties were investigated and rationalized through first principles.

Circularly Polarized Luminescence in Nanoassemblies: Generation, Amplification, and Application

Currently, the development of circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) materials has drawn extensive attention due to the numerous potential applications in optical data storage, displays, backlights in 3D displays, and so on. While the fabrication of CPL-active materials generally requires chiral luminescent molecules, the introduction of the "self-assembly" concept offers a new perspective in obtaining the CPL-active materials. Following this approach, various self-assembled materials, including organic-, inorganic-, and hybrid systems can be endowed with CPL properties. Benefiting from the advantages of self-assembly, not only chiral molecules, but also achiral species, as well as inorganic nanoparticles have potential to be self-assembled into chiral nanoassemblies showing CPL activity. In addition, the dissymmetry factor, an important parameter of CPL materials, can be enhanced through various pathways of self-assembly. Here, the present status and progress of self-assembled nanomaterials with CPL activity are reviewed. An overview of the key factors in regulating chiral emission materials at the supramolecular level will largely boost their application in multidisciplinary fields.

Synthesis, Resolution, Configurational Stability, and Properties of Cationic Functionalized [5]Helicenes

A straightforward approach to the synthesis of two different series of cationic [5]helicenes has been achieved including, in dioxa series, the possibility to introduce aromatic functional groups at the periphery of the helical structure. While photophysical study highlights that the introduction of aryl substituents at position 23 of the helical moieties has a negligible impact on the optical properties, styryl substituents allow a welcoming extension of the conjugation pathways. Finally, a red shift of the optical properties was evidenced upon introduction of nitrogen atoms in the helicene scaffold, leading to particularly good fluorescence efficiencies in the red domain for a helicenic dye. Detailed information on racemization kinetics was collected for the most stable species upon direct high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) resolution or, when configurational lability was too high, through VT-HPLC analysis on the chiral stationary phase (ΔG^‡ values ranging from 85.0 to 137.1 kJ·mol^-1 and above).

The Progress and Perspective of Organic Molecules With Switchable Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has been under intense research for future applications in high-resolution 3D displays, smart sensors, and information technologies. Different types of CPL materials have been developed, but neither the handedness nor the asymmetrical luminescence degree can be inferred from the material composition or the components. CPL materials with switchable handedness or emission wavelength play an important role, reducing the need for repetitive bottom-up synthesis. Here, we have presented switchable CPL behaviors toward multiple reported stimuli, including light irradiation, host-guest interaction, metal ions, pH, solvent, temperature, etc. This summary and discussion of the effective stimuli is aimed to promote rational future material exploration and boost related multidisciplinary applications.

Chiral Diketopyrrolopyrrole-Helicene Polymer With Efficient Red Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Chiral diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-helicene polymers were synthesized to develop efficient red circularly polarized (CP) light emitters. These original chiral dyes display intense electronic circular dichroism (ECD) and CP luminescence (CPL) in the far-red spectral region owing to the presence of excitonic coupling between achiral DPPs within the chiral environment of the polymeric structure. This work affords an interesting example illustrating the potential of π-conjugated helical polymers for chiral optoelectronic applications.

Self-enhanced multicolor electrochemiluminescence by competitive electron-transfer processes

Controlling electrochemiluminescence (ECL) color(s) is crucial for many applications ranging from multiplexed bioassays to ECL microscopy. This can only be achieved through the fundamental understanding of high-energy electron-transfer processes in complex and competitive reaction schemes. Recently, this field has generated huge interest, but the effective implementation of multicolor ECL is constrained by the limited number of ECL-active organometallic dyes. Herein, the first self-enhanced organic ECL dye, a chiral red-emitting cationic diaza [4]helicene connected to a dimethylamino moiety by a short linker, is reported. This molecular system integrates bifunctional ECL features (i.e. luminophore and coreactant) and each function may be operated either separately or simultaneously. This unique level of control is enabled by integrating but decoupling both molecular functions in a single molecule. Through this dual molecular reactivity, concomitant multicolor ECL emission from red to blue with tunable intensity is readily obtained in aqueous media. This is done through competitive electron-transfer processes between the helicene and a ruthenium or iridium dye. The reported approach provides a general methodology to extend to other coreactant/luminophore systems, opening enticing perspectives for spectrally distinct detection of several analytes, and original analytical and imaging strategies.

Merging polyacenes and cationic helicenes: from weak to intense chiroptical properties in the far red region

A series of helical tetracenes and pentacenes was synthesized from cationic [6] and [4]helicene precursors. These colorful acenes fluoresce in the far red region. While [4]helicene-based pentacenes exhibit chiroptical properties mainly in the UV region, [6]helicene-derived tetracenes show enhanced ECD in the visible range, in addition to clear CPL responses. This difference is rationalized using first principles.

Significantly Boosted and Inversed Circularly Polarized Luminescence from Photogenerated Radical Anions in Dipeptide Naphthalenediimide Assemblies

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) reflects the excited-state properties of the chiral system. However, compared to the singlet and triplet excited states, there are still many unknowns about CPL from the double excited state. Here, using the self-assembly strategy of a dipeptide substituted naphthalenediimide (NDI-GE) and the photogenerated radical anions, we have explored the ground-state (CD) and excited-state (CPL) chiral characteristics of neutral NDI and NDI^•- radical anion assemblies. The neutral gelator assemblies showed CPL with the dissymmetry factor g_lum on the order of 10^-3; the radical anion exhibited an inversed CPL signal with a significantly enhanced g_lum of 10^-1. Time-dependent density functional theory calculation revealed that upon formation of the radical anions, the direction of the dipole moment changed, thus leading to the inversion of CD and CPL. The present work reveals a new platform for developing CPL materials based on the doublet excited state.

Specific labeling of mitochondria of Chlamydomonas with cationic helicene fluorophores

Twelve cationic helicenes and one triangulene were tested for the specific labeling of mitochondria from algal cells. Octyl ester derivative 5 readily penetrates algal cells and gives rise to clear fluorescence patterns when it is used at concentrations in the μM range. Under these conditions, cell structures are well preserved and cell survival is not compromised. Cationic helicene compounds such as 5 provide new useful tools for examining the mitochondrial network and its dynamics including fission and fusion events.

Advances in helicene derivatives with circularly polarized luminescence

This review summarizes the recent research progress of helicenes and their derivatives with circularly polarized luminescence properties.

Chiral nanostructures self-assembled from nitrocinnamic amide amphiphiles: substituent and solvent effects

Chiral nanostructures, such as α-helical proteins and double helix DNA, are widely found in biological systems and play a significant role in the biofunction of life. These structures are essentially fabricated through the covalent or noncovalent bonds between small chiral molecules. It is thus an important issue to understand how small chiral molecules can form chiral nanostructures. Here, using a series of isomeric nitrocinnamic amide derivatives, we have investigated the self-assembly behavior and the effect of the substituent position as well as the solvent on the formation of chiral nanostructures. It was found that totally different chiral nanostructures were formed due to the different positions of the nitro group on the cinnamic amide. Moreover, it was found that the chiral sense of the self-assembled nanostructures can be regulated by the solvent whereby helicity inversion was observed. This work provides a simple way to regulate the self-assembly pathway via molecular design and choice of solvent for the controlled creation of chiral nanostructures.

Recent Theoretical and Experimental Progress in Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Small Organic Molecules

Small organic molecules (SOMs) with fascinating chiroptical properties have received much attention for their potential applications in photoelectric and biological devices. As an important research tool, circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) provides information about the chiral structures of these molecules in their excited state, and has been an active area of research. With the development of the commercially available CPL instrumentation, currently, more and more research groups have attempted to enhance the CPL parameters (i.e., quantum yield and dissymmetry factor) of the chiral SOMs from all aspects. This review summarizes the latest five years progresses in research on the experimental techniques and theoretical calculations of CPL emitted from SOMs, as well as forecasting its trend of development.

Combined reversible switching of ECD and quenching of CPL with chiral fluorescent macrocycles

A series of chiral fluorescent macrocycles display a remarkable combination of both +/– ECD and strong on/off CPL reversible switching upon cation binding and displacement.

Straightforward synthesis and resolution of a series of chiral fluorescent macrocycles are presented, together with their electronic circular dichroism (ECD), strong excimer fluorescence (EF, λ 300 to 650 nm) and allied highly circularly polarized luminescence (CPL, g_lum up to 1.7 × 10^–2). The ECD, EF and CPL responses are strongly affected by the presence of metal ions (Na⁺, Ba²⁺) thanks to deep conformational changes. While ECD signals can be almost completely reversibly inverted upon the complexation/decomplexation of metal ions in a typical binary response, CPL signals are reversibly quenched concomitantly. The designed macrocycles display thus a remarkable combination of both +/– ECD and on/off CPL reversible switching.

C-Functionalized Cationic Diazaoxatriangulenes: Late-Stage Synthesis and Tuning of Physicochemical Properties

A series of nine C-functionalized cationic diazaoxatriangulene (DAOTA) dyes have been successfully synthesized and fully characterized, including X-ray structural analysis of four derivatives. The introduction of electron-withdrawing or -donating functions enables the tuning of both electro- and photochemical properties with, for instance, two consecutive (reversible) reductions or oxidations observed for nitro or amino derivatives, respectively. The substituents also impacted on the optical properties, with absorption maxima varying from λ=528 to 640 nm and fluorescence being shifted from the yellow to the red range, up to λ=656 nm.

Design, synthesis, and time-gated cell imaging of carbon-bridged triangulenium dyes with long fluorescence lifetime and red emission

Time-resolved fluorescence offers many advantages over normal steady-state detection and becomes increasingly important in bioimaging. However, only very few fluorophores with emission in the visible range and fluorescence lifetimes above 5 ns are available. In this work, we prepare a series of new aza/oxa-triangulenium dyes where one of the usual oxa or aza bridges is replaced by an isopropyl bridge. This leads to a significant redshift of fluorescence with only moderate reductions of quantum yields and a unique long fluorescence lifetime. The fluorescence of the isopropyl bridged diazatriangulenium derivative CDATA+ is red-shifted by 50 nm (1400 cm-1) as compared to the oxygen-bridged DAOTA+ chromophore and has intense emission in the red region (600-700 nm) with a quantum yield of 61%, and a fluorescence lifetime of 15.8 ns in apolar solution. When the CDATA+ dye is used as cell stain, high photostability and efficient time-gated cell imaging is demonstrated.

Switch-ON Near IR Fluorescent Dye Upon Protonation: Helically Twisted Bis(Boron Difluoride) Complex of π-Extended Corrorin

A novel helically twisted π-extended corrorin derivative having two boron dipyrrin (BODIPY) moieties at the periphery, a BODIPY DYEmer (6-BF₂ ) cross-bridged with π-conjugated dipyrrinylidene unit, was synthesized and characterized. The neutral 6-BF₂ is nonfluorescent due to the internal photoinduced charge transfer (CT) character in the excited state as inferred from the femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. However, upon protonation, the CT process is suppressed and the species H6-BF₂⁺ becomes near infrared (IR) emissive. With the aid of rigid helical conformations in 6-BF₂ , the helical isomers (P- and M-forms) were resolved and their chiroptical property was investigated. The distinct circular dichroism (CD) spectral changes of the enantiomers were observed in the presence of acids, which demonstrates that 6-BF₂ can be utilized for potential acid-responsive chiroptical materials.

Proton triggered circularly polarized luminescence in orthogonal- and co-assemblies of chiral gelators with achiral perylene bisimide

Acid–base exposure switched circularly polarized luminescence was achieved in a coassembled gel which is composed of a chiral gelator and achiral perylene bisimide.
