Abstract
Covalently bridged pillararene-based oligomers (CBPOs) are formed by covalent bonding of pillararene monomers, and they play a critical role in expanding the multi-disciplinary application of pillararenes due to their excellent molecular complexing ability, specially designed geometry and multifunctional linking groups. This article provides a comprehensive review of the synthesis and applications of CBPOs. The design and synthetic strategies of a series of CBPOs (dimers, trimers, tetramers and others) are first introduced. Many CBPOs with multi-cavities and unique geometry are very attractive and efficient building blocks for constructing novel smart supramolecular polymers (SPs) with different topological structures through host-guest interactions. We describe the methods of constructing various SPs based on CBPOs in detail. Furthermore, the extensive applications of CBPOs and CBPO-based SPs in recognition and detection of ions and organic small molecules, selective adsorption and separation, artificial light-harvesting systems, catalysis, drug delivery systems, and others are systematically introduced. Finally, the future challenges and perspectives for CBPOs are also highlighted.

Abstract
A mono-mercapto-functionalized pillar[5]arene and its dimer, capable of being reversibly interconverted, were successfully synthesized. Fascinatingly, a faster reversible redox conversion involving a dynamic disulfide bond was observed between their host-guest complexes compared with the hosts themselves.

Abstract
A discrete rhomboidal metallacycle R functionalized with bis-[2]pseudorotaxane of [Cu(phenanthroline)2]+ derivatives was successfully synthesized via coordination-driven self-assembly. Furthermore, the host-guest complexation of such a bis-[2]pseudorotaxane metallacycle with a bis-pillar[5]arene (bisP5) allowed for the formation of a new family of cross-linked supramolecular polymers R⊃(bisP5)2, which displayed interesting redox-responsive properties. By taking advantage of the substantial structural differences between the coordination geometries of [Cu(phenanthroline)2]+ and [Cu(phenanthroline)2]2+, the weight-average diffusion coefficients D of the supramolecular polymer were adjusted through changing the redox state of the Cu(i)/Cu(ii) complexes.

Abstract
Covalently linked multiple calixarenes are valued in supramolecular chemistry. This work reports an easy and versatile synthetic route to covalently linked double and triple calix[4]arene and calix[6]arenes by a novel DMF-controlled selective alkylation of a convenient and readily available upper-rim dimethylaminomethyl-substituted tetrahydroxy and hexahydroxy calix[4]arene and -[6]arenes. Synthetic routes to upper-rim functionalised redox active disulfide-linked double-, tetra- and peptidohybrid-calixarenes employing either redox chemistry (CH2 SH) or thiolates (CH2 S- ) are also opened up from the same key starting material.

Abstract
We report the switchable optical waveguide microfibers based on fluorescent supramolecular polymer for the first time. The pillar[5]arene-based supramolecular polymeric microfibers were prepared easily from the viscous solution of bispillar[5]arene host (bisP5A) and diphenylanthracene-derived guest (GD). The resulting microfibers act as an active optical waveguide material with long propagation distance (400 μm) and low optical propagation loss (0.01 dB/μm). When photoresponsive dithienylethene-derived guest (GDTE) was added, the resulting ternary microfibers show switchable optical waveguide by the noninvasive control of UV/vis light with negligible fatigue over four cycles. This convenient preparation method is also applied for the quadruple-hydrogen-bonded fluorescent supramolecular polymeric microfibers which imply good light propagation property with an optical loss coefficient of 0.02 dB/μm.

Abstract
Artificial light-harvesting nanoparticles were prepared from supramolecular polymers comprised of pillar[5]arene with anthracene-derived donors and acceptors through host-guest interactions. The resulting water-dispersible nanoparticles displayed efficient energy transfer and excellent light harvesting ability in part because the steric bulk of pillar[5]arene suppressed the self-quenching of the chromophores.

Abstract
A novel supramolecular polymer was constructed between Q[14] host and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(N-butyl-4-pyridinium)porphyrin tetrabromide guest depending on the host–guest interactions, representing the first cucurbit[14]uril-involved host–guest supramolecular polymer.
