Self-assembly of amphiphilic asymmetric comb-like copolymers with responsive rigid side chains

Amphiphilic asymmetric comb-like copolymers (AACCs) exhibit distinct self-assembly behaviours due to their unique architecture. However, the synthetic difficulties of well-defined AACCs have prohibited a systematic understanding of the architecture-morphology relationship. In this work, we conducted dissipative particle dynamics simulations to investigate the self-assembly behaviours of AACCs with responsive rigid side chains in selective solvents. The effects of side chain length, number of branches, and spacers on the morphology of aggregates were investigated by mapping out morphology diagrams. Besides, the numbers and surface areas of aggregates clearly depicted the morphological transitions during the self-assembly process. Moreover, the rod-to-coil conformation transitions were simulated to explore the stimuli-responsive behaviour of the AACCs with responsive rigid side chains by adjusting the bond angle parameter of the rigid chains. The results indicated that without the support of the rigid chains, the assembly structure collapsed, leading to the tube-to-channelized micelles and one-compartment-to-multicompartment vesicle morphology transformations. The simulation results are consistent with earlier experimental results, which can provide theoretical guidance for assembly toward desired nanostructures.

Styrene-Maleimide/Maleic Anhydride Alternating Copolymers: Recent Advances and Future Perspectives

Alternating sequencing of styrene-maleimide/maleic anhydride (S-MI/MA) in the copolymer chain is known for a long time. But since early 2000, this class of copolymers has been extensively studied using various living/controlled polymerization techniques to design S-MI/MA alternating copolymers with tunable molecular weight, narrow dispersity (Ð), and precise chain-end functionality. The widespread diverse applications of this polymeric backbone are due to its ease of synthesis, cheap starting materials, high precision in alternating sequencing, and facile post-polymerization functionalization with simple organic reactions. Recently, S-MI/MA alternating copolymers have been rediscovered as novel polymers with unprecedented emissive behavior. It outperforms the traditional fluorophores with no aggregation caused quenching (ACQ), aqueous solubility, and greater cell viability. Herein, the origin of alternating sequence, synthesis, and recent (2010-Present) developments in applications of these polymers in different fields are elaborately discussed, including the advantages of the unconventional luminogenic property. This review article also highlights the future research directions of the versatile S-MI/MA copolymers.

Molecular Bottlebrushes Featuring Brush-on-Brush Architecture

Molecular bottlebrushes featuring brush-on-brush (BoB) architecture were prepared by combining azide-alkyne click chemistry, ring-opening polymerization (ROP), and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Primary side chains of diblock copolymers with a poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) block and a poly(α-bromo-ε-caprolactone) (P(CL-Br)) block were synthesized by ROP and then grafted onto PCL backbone by the click reaction. Then the secondary side chains of poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) acrylate) (POEGA) were grafted from the P(CL-Br) block by ATRP, yielding an amphiphilic core/shell structure. Imaging of individual macromolecules by atomic force microscopy (AFM) demonstrated dramatically thickened wormlike formation with distinct hairy side chains. Interestingly, for the BoB molecular bottlebrushes with enough long primary and secondary side chains, sufficient tension can be generated along the backbone and thus lead to its cleavage.

Understanding the effects of symmetric salt on the structure of a planar dipolar polymer brush

The effects of added salt on a planar dipolar polymer brush immersed in a polar solvent are studied using a field theoretic approach. The field theory developed in this work provides a unified framework for capturing effects of the inhomogeneous dielectric function, translational entropy of ions, crowding due to finite sized ions, ionic size asymmetry, and ion solvation. In this paper, we use the theory to study the effects of ion sizes, their concentration, and ion-solvation on the polymer segment density profiles of a dipolar brush immersed in a solution containing symmetric salt ions. The interplay of crowding effects, translational entropy, and ion solvation is shown to exhibit either an increase or decrease in the brush height. Translational entropy and crowding effects due to finite sizes of the ions tend to cause expansion of the brush as well as uniform distribution of the ions. By contrast, ion-solvation effects, which tend to be stronger for smaller ions, are shown to cause shrinkage of the brush and inhomogeneous distribution of the ions.
