Supramolecular framework membrane for precise sieving of small molecules, nanoparticles and proteins

Synthetic framework materials have been cherished as appealing candidates for separation membranes in daily life and industry, while the challenges still remain in precise control of aperture distribution and separation threshold, mild processing methods, and extensive application aspects. Here, we show a two-dimensional (2D) processible supramolecular framework (SF) by integrating directional organic host-guest motifs and inorganic functional polyanionic clusters. The thickness and flexibility of the obtained 2D SFs are tuned by the solvent modulation to the interlayer interactions, and the optimized SFs with limited layers but micron-sized areas are used to fabricate the sustainable membranes. The uniform nanopores allow the membrane composed of layered SF to exhibit strict size retention for substrates with the rejection value of 3.8 nm, and the separation accuracy within 5 kDa for proteins. Furthermore, the membrane performs high charge selectivity for charged organics, nanoparticles, and proteins, due to the insertion of polyanionic clusters in the framework skeletons. This work displays the extensional separation potentials of self-assembled framework membranes comprising of small-molecules and provides a platform for the preparation of multifunctional framework materials due to the conveniently ionic exchange of the counterions of the polyanionic clusters.

An AB2 -Type Hyperbranched Supramolecular Polymer Based on Calix[4]pyrrole Anion Recognition: Construction, Stimuli-Responsiveness, and Morphology Tuning

An AB₂ -type monomer comprised of a calix[4]pyrrole skeleton and alternating bis-carboxylate units is reported and used for the construction of a novel supramolecular hyperbranched polymer based on anion recognition ability of calix[4]pyrrole. ¹ H-, DOSY-NMR spectroscopy, viscosity measurements, and dynamic light scattering techniques are used for the characterization of the supramolecular hyperbranched polymer exhibiting thermo-, pH-, and chemical responsiveness, as well as concentration dependent morphology tune as inferred from electron microscopy analyses. The present study enriches the field of supramolecular polymers with a new construction motif, building block, and provides a simple approach for the fabrication of smart polymer material with multi-responsiveness and -morphologies. Supramolecular hyperbranched polymer gels based on pillar[5]arene and their applications in removal of micropollutants from water

Two kinds of pillar[5]arene-based supramolecular hyperbranched polymer gels were constructed and applied to efficiently remove micropollutants from water.

Covalently bridged pillararene-based oligomers: from construction to applications

Covalently bridged pillararene-based oligomers (CBPOs) are formed by covalent bonding of pillararene monomers, and they play a critical role in expanding the multi-disciplinary application of pillararenes due to their excellent molecular complexing ability, specially designed geometry and multifunctional linking groups. This article provides a comprehensive review of the synthesis and applications of CBPOs. The design and synthetic strategies of a series of CBPOs (dimers, trimers, tetramers and others) are first introduced. Many CBPOs with multi-cavities and unique geometry are very attractive and efficient building blocks for constructing novel smart supramolecular polymers (SPs) with different topological structures through host-guest interactions. We describe the methods of constructing various SPs based on CBPOs in detail. Furthermore, the extensive applications of CBPOs and CBPO-based SPs in recognition and detection of ions and organic small molecules, selective adsorption and separation, artificial light-harvesting systems, catalysis, drug delivery systems, and others are systematically introduced. Finally, the future challenges and perspectives for CBPOs are also highlighted.

Pillararenes Trimer for Self-Assembly

Pillararenes trimer with particularly designed structural geometry and excellent capacity of recognizing guest molecules is a very efficient and attractive building block for the fabrication of advanced self-assembled materials. Pillararenes trimers could be prepared via both covalent and noncovalent bonds. The classic organic synthesis reactions such as click reaction, palladium-catalyzed coupling reaction, amidation, esterification, and aminolysis are employed to build covalent bonds and integrate three pieces of pillararenes subunits together into the “star-shaped” trimers and linear foldamers. Alternatively, pillararenes trimers could also be assembled in the form of host-guest inclusions and mechanically interlocked molecules via noncovalent interactions, and during those procedures, pillararenes units contribute the cavity for recognizing guest molecules and act as a “wheel” subunit, respectively. By fully utilizing the driving forces such as host-guest interactions, charge transfer, hydrophobic, hydrogen bonding, and C–H^…π and π–π stacking interactions, pillararenes trimers-based supramolecular self-assemblies provide a possibility in the construction of multi-dimensional materials such as vesicular and tubular aggregates, layered networks, as well as frameworks. Interestingly, those assembled materials exhibit interesting external stimuli responsiveness to e.g., variable concentrations, changed pH values, different temperature, as well as the addition/removal of competition guests and ions. Thus, they could further be used for diverse applications such as detection, sorption, and separation of significant multi-analytes including metal cations, anions, and amino acids.

Functional supramolecular gels based on pillar[n]arene macrocycles

Supramolecular gels constructed from low-molecular-weight gelators via noncovalent interactions have received increasing attention. The rapid development of stimuli-responsive supramolecular gels with attractive properties is highly desirable to meet the ever-growing demand of materials science and chemistry. The inherent reversible and dynamic nature of noncovalent interactions in supramolecular gels endows the materials with sensing, processing, and actuating functions in response to specific environmental changes and offers them great potential in flexible biomaterials and intelligent devices. In particular, pillar[n]arenes with symmetrical pillar-shaped architectures have been recognized as an emerging class of synthetic macrocycles after crown ethers, cyclodextrins, calixarenes, and cucurbiturils, and proven to be excellent candidates for the fabrication of functional supramolecular gels due to their many advantages including facile synthesis, diverse functionalization, and appealing host-guest properties. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent progress in supramolecular gels involving pillar[n]arenes and their derivatives as synthetic macrocyclic arenes, from the viewpoints of the synthetic approach, controllable assembly, stimuli-responsiveness, and functions. Perspectives of this burgeoning field of research are also given at the end.

Formation of a Supramolecular Polymeric Adhesive via Water-Participant Hydrogen Bond Formation

A supramolecular polymeric adhesive was prepared from non-viscous, non-polymeric materials by water-participant hydrogen bonds. Pt-pyridine coordination and water-crown ether hydrogen bonding combine to effect the supramolecular polymerization. The supramolecular polymeric adhesive displays strong, reversible adhesion to hydrophilic surfaces, a property that forecasts the application of hydrogen bonding in advanced supramolecular materials.

Pillararene-based supramolecular polymers

Pillararenes, as a new type of macrocyclic hosts, possess columnar structures and electron-rich cavities. Pillararenes not only recognize suitable cations, but also bind many neutral molecules. Due to the easy modification of pillararenes, various functional groups can be conveniently attached to the rim of pillararenes to provide suitable interaction sites, and the modified pillararenes even bind anionic guests. Thus, pillararenes and their derivatives have presented intriguing and unique host-guest recognition nature in the past few years, which make them ideal building blocks for the preparation of supramolecular polymers. Pillararene-based supramolecular polymers (PSPs) not only possess many merits of traditional covalent polymers but also have many specific properties, such as self-reparability, degradability, and self-adaptation. This feature paper gives an overview of the preparation of PSPs and covers recent research advance and future trends of pillararene-based host-guest pairs, assembly methods, topological architectures, stimuli-responsiveness, and functional features. We expect that the review will be helpful to researchers working in the fields of supramolecular chemistry and polymer science.

Differences in solubilities, crystal structures, NMR spectra and fluorescence emissions induced by potassium cation/benzo-21-crown-7 molecular recognition

Changes of the fundamental properties of host–guest pairs induced by potassium cation complexation were investigated.

Preparation of cross-linked supramolecular polymers based on benzo-21-crown-7/secondary ammonium salt host-guest interactions

We found that TC7 not only self-assembles into one-dimensional supramolecular aggregates in chloroform, but also forms cross-linked supramolecular polymers via host-guest complexation between benzo-21-crown-7 and secondary ammonium salts. Compared with one-dimensional linear supramolecular polymers, soft and long viscous fibers were pulled out from a concentrated solution of cross-linked supramolecular polymers as a result of higher viscosity and lower diffusion coefficients.

Multi-stimuli-responsive supramolecular gel constructed by pillar[5]arene-based pseudorotaxanes for efficient detection and separation of multi-analytes in aqueous solution

Here, a novel pseudorotaxanes-type crosslinker of a supramolecular polymer network (WP5-PN) has been constructed from a host water-soluble pillar[5]arene (WP5) and a guest naphthalene dimethylamine derivative (PN) via a stepwise process involving multiple non-covalent interactions. The obtained supramolecular polymers were able to transform into a supramolecular polymer gel (WP5-PN-G) and show AIE properties in DMSO-H2O binary solution. Interestingly, due to the dynamic and reversible nature of non-covalent interactions, the resultant supramolecular polymer gels exhibited external stimuli-responsiveness to different parameters, such as temperature, acid-base, competitive guest and mechanical stress. Moreover, WP5-PN-G showed fluorescent response for Fe3+ and Cu2+, while its xerogel showed excellent recyclable separation properties for these metal ions with adsorption rates up to 98.07% and 95.38%, respectively. Moreover, by rational introduction of these metal ions into the WP5-PN-G, corresponding metal ion coordinated metallogels, such as WP5-PN-FeG and WP5-PN-CuG were obtained. These metallogels could selectively and sensitively sense F- and CN-, respectively. The detection limits of these metallogels for F- and CN- were about 1 × 10-8 M. The WP5-PN-G has potential applications in multi-analytes detection and separation as well as fluorescent display materials.

Fabrication of POSS-embedded supramolecular hyperbranched polymers with multi-responsive morphology transitions

We demonstrate a simple approach to prepare POSS-embedded supramolecular hyperbranched polymers with multiple stimulus morphology transitions driven by triple supramolecular driving forces in selective solvents.

Hybrid multicyclophanes based on thiacalix[4]arene and pillar[5]arene: synthesis and influence on the formation of polyaniline

A series of new tetrakispillar[5]thiacalix[4]arenes was synthesized. Supramolecular assistance of the multicyclophanes in oxidative polymerization of aniline was studied.

ABx-type amphiphilic macromonomer-based supramolecular hyperbranched polymers for controllable self-assembly

A novel supramolecular hyperbranched polymer (SHP) is constructed through using an AB_x-type amphiphilic macromonomer. The obtained SHP can form ellipsoidal unimolecular micelles and branched aggregates under different solution conditions.

Aqueous interfacial gels assembled from small molecule supramolecular polymers

The successful self-assembly of a stimuli-responsive aqueous supramolecular hyperbranched polymer from small molecules and the macrocyclic host cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) is reported. This self-healing supramolecular network can act as a soft matter barrier at liquid–liquid interfaces.

The self-assembly of a stimuli-responsive aqueous supramolecular hyperbranched polymer from small molecules is reported. This system is composed of ditopic and tritopic guest-functionalised molecules that are able to form heteroternary supramolecular complexes with the macrocyclic host cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]). We demonstrate that the supramolecular hyperbranched polymer formed is responsive to both photo- and chemical stimuli, exhibiting reversibility. Furthermore, this system is shown to assemble at liquid–liquid interfaces, which upon gelation, is observable on the micrometre scale. This self-healing supramolecular network can act as a soft matter barrier for aqueous microdroplets, inhibiting their coalescence.
