Low-temperature aerobic carbonization and activation of cellulosic materials for Pb2+ removal in water source

Targeting the removal of Pb²⁺ in wastewater, cellulosic materials were carbonized in an aerobic environment and activated via ion exchange. The maximum adsorption capacity reached 243.5 mg/g on an MCC-derived adsorbent activated with sodium acetate. The modified porous properties improved the adsorption capacity. The capacity could be completely recovered five times through elution with EDTA. Because of the negative effects of Ni, Mg, and Ca elements, the adsorption capacities of activated carbonized natural materials were lower than that of pure cellulose. N₂ adsorption measurement showed that the adsorbent had a large specific surface area as well as abundant micropores and 4-nm-sized mesopores. FTIR and surface potential results proved that carboxyl group was generated in the aerobic carbonization, and was deprotonated during ion exchange. This adsorbent consisted of C-C bonds as the building blocks and hydrophilic groups on the surface. XPS results demonstrated that the Pb 4f binding energies were reduced by 0.7-0.8 eV due to the interaction between Pb²⁺ and the activated adsorbent, indicating that the carboxylate groups bonded with Pb²⁺ through coordination interactions. Pseudo-second-order and Elovich kinetic models were well fitted with the adsorption processes on the pristine and activated carbonized adsorbents, indicative of chemisorption on heterogeneous surfaces. The Freundlich expression agreed well with the data measured, and the pristine and activated adsorbents had weak and strong affinities for Pb²⁺, respectively. The Pb²⁺ adsorption process was exothermic and spontaneous, and heat release determined the spontaneity. The adsorption capacity is attributed to the carboxylate groups and pores generated in the aerobic oxidation and ion exchange procedures.

“One-pot” aminolysis/thia-Michael addition preparation of well-defined amphiphilic PVDF-b-PEG-b-PVDF triblock copolymers: self-assembly behaviour in mixed solvents

Novel amphiphilic PVDF-based triblock copolymer (PVDF₅₀-b-PEG₁₃₆-b-PVDF₅₀) is synthesized using RAFT polymerization and a one-pot thia-Michael addition. Self-assembly of this ABA copolymer resulted in formation of original crystalline structures.

Fluorinated Titania Nanoparticle-Induced Piezoelectric Phase Transition of Poly(vinylidene fluoride)

We prepared F-coated rutile titanium dioxide nanoparticles (r-TiO₂ NPs) via simple thermal annealing of titania NPs in poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and demonstrated that the F-coated r-TiO₂ NP-doped composite film could efficiently induce piezoelectric phase transition of non-electroactive PVDF due to highly electronegative F bonds on the surface of these NPs. In the case of a 2.0 wt % composite film, 99.20% of the non-electroactive PVDF was transformed into the electroactive phase. Additionally, utilizing the F-coated r-TiO₂ NPs for a piezoelectric device led to an enhancement of the piezoelectric performance. With the 5.0 wt % composite film, the resulting piezoelectric device exhibited voltage generation of 355 mV, whereas a device with the innate r-TiO₂ NPs exhibited voltage generation of only 137 mV. Furthermore, because of optical inactivity of F-coated r-TiO₂ NPs, the piezoelectric films exhibited high stability under 64 h of photoirradiation at an intensity of 0.1 W/cm². These results indicate that the F-coated r-TiO₂ NP-doped composite films could be useful for various applications, including outdoor energy-harvesting, self-powered wearable devices, and portable sensors.

Polymers Based on Cyclic Carbonates as Trait d'Union Between Polymer Chemistry and Sustainable CO2 Utilization

Given the large amount of anthropogenic CO₂ emissions, it is advantageous to use CO₂ as feedstock for the fabrication of everyday products, such as fuels and materials. An attractive way to use CO₂ in the synthesis of polymers is by the formation of five-membered cyclic organic carbonate monomers (5CCs). The sustainability of this synthetic approach is increased by using scaffolds prepared from renewable resources. Indeed, recent years have seen the rise of various types of carbonate syntheses and applications. 5CC monomers are often polymerized with diamines to yield polyhydroxyurethanes (PHU). Foams are developed from this type of polymers; moreover, the additional hydroxyl groups in PHU, absent in classical polyurethanes, lead to coatings with excellent adhesive properties. Furthermore, carbonate groups in polymers offer the possibility of post-functionalization, such as curing reactions under mild conditions. Finally, the polarity of carbonate groups is remarkably high, so polymers with carbonates side-chains can be used as polymer electrolytes in batteries or as conductive membranes. The target of this Review is to highlight the multiple opportunities offered by polymers prepared from and/or containing 5CCs. Firstly, the preparation of several classes of 5CCs is discussed with special focus on the sustainability of the synthetic routes. Thereafter, specific classes of polymers are discussed for which the use and/or presence of carbonate moieties is crucial to impart the targeted properties (foams, adhesives, polymers for energy applications, and other functional materials).

Electroactive materials with tunable response based on block copolymer self-assembly

Ferroelectric polymers represent one of the key building blocks for the preparation of flexible electronic devices. However, their lack of functionality and ability to simply tune their ferroelectric response significantly diminishes the number of fields in which they can be applied. Here we report an effective way to introduce functionality in the structure of ferroelectric polymers while preserving ferroelectricity and to further tune the ferroelectric response by incorporating functional insulating polymer chains at the chain ends of ferroelectric polymer in the form of block copolymers. The block copolymer self-assembly into lamellar nanodomains allows confined crystallization of the ferroelectric polymer without hindering the crystallinity or chain conformation. The simple adjustment of block polarity leads to a significantly different switching behavior, from ferroelectric to antiferroelectric-like and linear dielectric. Given the simplicity and wide flexibility in designing molecular structure of incorporated blocks, this approach shows the vast potential for application in numerous fields.

Tailored Self-Assembled Ferroelectric Polymer Nanostructures with Tunable Response

A facile ferroelectric nanostructures preparation method is developed based on the self-assembly of poly(2-vinylpyridine)-b-poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene)-b-poly(2-vinylpyridine) triblock copolymers (P2VP-b-P(VDF-TrFE)-b-P2VP), and the effect of morphological characteristics of the block copolymers on the ferroelectric response has been investigated for the first time. By simple adjustment of the ratio between the blocks, lamellar, cylindrical, and spherical morphologies are obtained in the melt and preserved upon crystallization of P(VDF-TrFE). However, at high P(VDF-TrFE) content, crystallization becomes dominant and drives the self-assembly of block copolymers. The crystallization study of the block copolymers reveals the preservation of the high degree of crystallinity inside the confined nanodomains as well as the reduction of the crystalline size and the Curie transition temperature with the confinement level. Only a small difference in the coercive field and the shape of the hysteresis loop is observed for block copolymers with a lamellar morphology produced either by crystallization-driven self-assembly or by confinement inside preformed lamellar domains. In contrast, delayed spontaneous polarization or the absence of dipole switching is demonstrated for the confinement of ferroelectric crystals inside both isolated cylindrical and spherical domains, exemplifying the influence of dimensionality on the critical size for ferroelectric order.

Bis(formylphenolato)cobalt(II)-Mediated Alternating Radical Copolymerization of tert-Butyl 2-Trifluoromethylacrylate with Vinyl Acetate

The organometallic-mediated radical polymerization (OMRP) of vinyl acetate (VAc) and its OMR copolymerization (OMRcoP) with tert-butyl 2-trifluoromethylacrylate (MAF-TBE) mediated by Co(SAL)₂ (SAL = 2-formylphenolato or deprotonated salicylaldehyde) produced relatively well-defined PVAc and poly(VAc-alt-MAF-TBE) copolymers at moderate temperature (<40 °C) in bulk. The resulting alternating copolymer was characterized by ¹H-, 13C- and 19F-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies, and by size exclusion chromatography. The linear first-order kinetic plot, the linear evolutions of the molar mass with total monomer conversion, and the relatively low dispersity (Đ~1.55) of the resulting copolymers suggest that this cobalt complex provides some degree of control over the copolymerization of VAc and MAF-TBE. Compared to the previously investigated cobalt complex OMRP mediators having a fully oxygen-based first coordination sphere, this study emphasizes a few peculiarities of Co(SAL)₂: a lower ability to trap radical chains as compared to Co(acac)₂ and the absence of catalytic chain transfer reactions, which dominates polymerizations carried in the presence of 9-oxyphenalenone cobalt derivative.
