Ligand-Functionalized MIL-68-type Indium(III) Metal-Organic Frameworks with Prominent Intrinsic Proton Conductivity

Indium-based metal-organic frameworks (In-MOFs) have now become an attractive class of porous solids in materials science and electrochemistry due to their diverse structures and promising applications. In the field of proton conduction, to find more crystalline MOFs with splendid proton-conductive properties, herein, five three-dimensional isostructural In-MOFs, MIL-68-In or MIL-68-In-X (X = NH2, OH, Br, or NO2) using terephthalic acid (H2BDC) or functionalized terephthalic acids (H2BDC-X) as multifunctional linkages were efficiently fabricated. First, the outstanding structural stability of the five MOFs, including thermal and water stability, was verified by thermal analysis and powder X-ray diffraction. Subsequently, the H2O-mediated proton conductivities (σ) were fully assessed and compared. Notably, their σ evinced a significant positive correlation between the temperature or relative humidity (RH) and varied with the functional groups on the organic ligands. Impressively, their highest σ values are up to 10-3-10-4 S/cm (100 °C/98% RH) and change in this order: MIL-68-In-OH (1.72 × 10-3 S/cm) > MIL-68-In-NH2 (1.70 × 10-3 S/cm) > MIL-68-In-NO2 (4.47 × 10-4 S/cm) > MIL-68-In-Br (4.11 × 10-4 S/cm) > MIL-68-In (2.37 × 10-4 S/cm). Finally, the computed activation energy values under 98 or 68% RHs are assessed, and the related proton conduction mechanisms are speculated. Moreover, after electrochemical testing, these MOFs illustrate remarkable structural rigidity, laying a meritorious material foundation for future applications.

Defect Engineering of Nanoscale Hf-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks for Highly Efficient Iodine Capture

With the rapid development of the nuclear industry, how to deal with radioactive iodine waste in a timely and effective manner has become an important issue to be solved urgently. Herein, the defect-engineering strategy has been applied to develop a metal-organic framework (MOF)-based solid adsorbent by using the classical UiO-type Hf-UiO-66 as an example. After simple acid treatment, the produced defect-containing Hf-UiO-66 (DHUN) not only retains its topological structure, high crystallization, and regular shape but also shows a great increase in the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller value and pore size in comparison with the original Hf-UiO (HUN). These formed defects within DHUN have been demonstrated to be important for the great enhancement of the iodine capture and following application in computed tomography imaging in vitro. This present work gives a new insight into the control and formation of defect sites, and this simple and efficient defect-engineering strategy also shows great promise for the development of novel solid adsorbents and other functional MOF materials.

The role of coordination compounds in virus research. Different approaches and trends

This article aims to provide an overview of the studies focused on using coordination compounds as antiviral agents against different types of viruses. We present various strategies so far used to this end. This article is divided into two sections. The first collects the series of designed antiviral drugs based on coordination compounds. This approach has been developed for many years, starting from the 70s with the discovery of cis-platin (cis-DDP). It has been mainly focused on studying the synergistic effect of a wide variety of new compounds obtained by combining metal ions with organic antiviral ligands. Then, we collect various strategies analyzing the coordination compounds interacting with viruses using different processes such as wrapping viruses, rapid detection of RNA or DNA virus, or nanocarriers. These recent and novel insights help to study viruses from other points of view, allowing to measure their physical and chemical properties. We also highlight a section in which the issue of viruses from a disinfection viewpoint is addressed, using coordination compounds as a tool able to control the release of antiviral and biocide agents. This is an emerging and promising field but this approach is actually little developed. We finally provide a section with a general conclusion and perspectives.

Pyrrolidone-based polymers capable of reversible iodine capture for reuse in antibacterial applications

Numerous emerging and re-emerging advanced materials have been successful in capturing iodine pollutants that pose an unprecedented global challenge to public health. However, little attention has been paid to the reutilization of the captured iodine. Herein, we report on a pyrrolidone-based polymer capable of reversible iodine capture for reutilization in antibacterial applications. The pyrrolidone-based polymer poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone-co-vinyl acetate), denoted as P(VAc-NVP), was synthesized facilely via a one-step radical copolymerization strategy, and the synthesis was regulated by step-by-step optimization, specifically by tuning the feed ratio of NVP to VAc. The as-synthesized P(VAc-NVP) copolymer functioned as an adsorbent for iodine in various solutions, including water/ethanol, cyclohexane, and petroleum ether, in addition to having the special capability of releasing iodine in the presence of starch or bacteria. This opens up a new horizon for its functional practical use as a flexible adsorbent to capture iodine for safe disposal. Interestingly, the P(VAc-NVP) copolymer, after adsorbing iodine, showed antibacterial ability against pathogenic bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, when a series of simulated and practical antibacterial assays were conducted. It is believed that this proposed strategy based on the synergism of iodine capture and antibacterial use should have great potential for environmental remediation and public healthcare.

Temperature-dependent interchromophoric interaction in a fluorescent pyrene-based metal-organic framework

Compounds exhibiting tuneable fluorescence emission upon heating or cooling are considered smart materials as their optical properties can be exquisitely controlled by adjusting the external temperature. Herein, we report such a material, which is a porous pyrene-based metal-organic framework with a chemical formula of [Mg1.5(HTBAPy)(H2O)2]·3DMF (H4TBAPy = 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(p-benzoic acid)pyrene), named SION-7. The bulk solid material of SION-7 can display either monomer or excimer fluorescence emission due to the temperature-dependent extent of interchromophoric interactions between the HTBAPy3- ligands within the framework. Consequently, the fluorescence emission colours gradually change from blue at low temperature (80 K) to yellow-green at high temperature (450 K). Interestingly, while kept in a relatively wide temperature range of 80-200 K, SION-7 displays a structured monomer-like spectrum and its colour changes reversibly from deep to light blue. Ex situ variable-temperature (100-350 K) single-crystal X-ray diffractometry studies revealed the impact of solvent content on the optical properties of SION-7, and illustrated the correlation between the position of the phenylene groups of the HTBAPy3- ligands at different temperatures and the interchromophoric interaction. Our study demonstrates a step forward towards the design of tuneable thermofluorochromic materials sought by optoelectronics.

Novel N-rich porous organic polymers with extremely high uptake for capture and reversible storage of volatile iodine

The imino group-contained porous organic polytriphenylamine, which originated from diphenylamine and 1,3,5-tris(4-bromophenyl)benzene, was designedly synthesized though Buchwald-Hartwig coupling reaction. The basic properties including morphologies, structure and thermal stability of the resulting POPs were investigated by scanning electron microscope(SEM), thermo gravimeter analysis (TGA), ¹³C CP/MAS solid state NMR and Fourier transform infrared spectroscope (FTIR). The pore size distribution of POPs present uniform mesoporous of sizes less than 50nm. Scanning electron microscope images show that the resulting POPs formed as an aggregation composed of nanospheres. The POPs were employed as a physicochemical stable porous medium for removal of radioactive iodine and an iodine uptake of up to 382wt% was obtained. To our knowledge, this is one of the highest adsorption value reported to date. Based on these findings, the resulting POPs shows great potential in the removal of radioactive iodine at different states, through a green, environmentally friendly, and sustainable way.
