A one-pot stepwise strategy has been developed to afford C3-heteroaryl 3-fluorooxindoles via a Ce(iii)/photoassisted cross-dehydrogenative coupling/fluorooxidation process in moderate-to-good yields with excellent functional group compatibility.

Copper-mediated pentafluoroethylation of organoboronates and terminal alkynes with TMSCF3

The TMSCF₃-derived CuCF₂CF₃ species has been successfully applied in pentafluoroethylation of organoboronates and terminal alkynes. By using 1,10-phenanthroline as a ligand, a broad range of (hetero)arylboronates and alkenylboronates were smoothly pentafluoroethylated under aerobic conditions. Furthermore, terminal alkynes can undergo aerobic cross-coupling with the TMSCF₃-derived CuCF₂CF₃ species in the absence of additional ligands.

Copper-catalyzed selective oxidation of hydrazones through C(sp3)-H functionalization

A simple and mild protocol for copper-catalyzed oxidation of hydrazones at the α-position has been reported. Various substrates are compatible, providing the corresponding products in moderate to good yields. This strategy provides an efficient and convenient solution for the synthesis of carbonyl hydrazone. A free radical pathway mechanism is suggested for the transformation.

Hypervalent iodine(iii)-promoted rapid cascade reaction for the synthesis of unsymmetric azo compounds

A rapid three-component cascade reaction for the synthesis of unsymmetric azo compounds via a radical activation strategy has been reported. Various aryldiazonium salts and unactivated alkenes are well compatible, providing the corresponding products in good to excellent yields. This strategy gives an efficient and practical solution for the synthesis of unsymmetric azo compounds with two C-N bond formation. A free radical pathway mechanism is advised for this transformation.

Recent Developments of Quinoline Derivatives and their Potential Biological Activities

Heterocyclic compounds containing the quinoline ring play a significant role in organic synthesis and therapeutic chemistry. Polyfunctionalized quinolines have attracted the attention of many research groups, especially those who work on drug discovery and development. These derivatives have been widely explored by the research biochemists and are reported to possess wide biological activities. This review focuses on the recent progress in the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds based-quinoline and their potential biological activities.

Radical Pentafluoroethylation of Unactivated Alkenes Using CuCF2CF3

We have found that the CuCF₂CF₃ complex generated from low-cost pentafluoroethane is a convenient and practical source for the CF₂CF₃ radical under aerobic conditions at room temperature. Using this system, readily available unactivated alkenes can be pentafluoroethylated to provide novel allylic CF₂CF₃ compounds with excellent E-selectivity and functional group tolerability. Mechanistic studies including TEMPO-CF₂CF₃ trapping and radical clock experiments provided strong evidence for radical pathways, offering a new opportunity for copper-mediated radical perfluoroalkylation.

Synthesis of quinazoin-4-ones through an acid ion exchange resin mediated cascade reaction

An interesting cascade reaction of N-(2-(4,5-dihydrooxazol-2-yl)phenyl)benzamide in the presence of an acid ion exchange resin is described. In this reaction, a range of substrates bearing various substituent groups are well compatible. This work provides a green and atom-economical alternative approach for the synthesis of quinazolin-4-ones in good yields.

A regioselective C-C cross-coupling of 1,2,4-thiadiazoles with maleimides through iridium catalysis was developed. This transformation tactically linked the 1,2,4-thiadiazoles and succinimides together, and the novel molecules formed may have potential biological activity.

Visible Light-Promoted Photocatalytic C-5 Carboxylation of 8-Aminoquinoline Amides and Sulfonamides via a Single Electron Transfer Pathway

An efficient photocatalytic method was developed for the remote C5-H bond carboxylation of 8-aminoquinoline amide and sulfonamide derivatives. This methodology uses in situ generated ^•CBr₃ radical as a carboxylation agent with alcohol and is further extended to a variety of arenes and heteroarenes to synthesize the desired carboxylated product in moderate-to-good yields. The reaction proceeding through a single electron transfer pathway was established by a control experiment, and a butylated hydroxytoluene-trapped aryl radical cation intermediate in high-resolution mass spectrometry was identified.

Transition-metal free oxidative C-H etherification of acylanilines with alcohols through a radical pathway

A transition metal free approach for the synthesis of methyl/ethyl aryl ether via oxidative C-H etherification of acylanilines with alcohols has been developed. Various acylanilines are compatible under standard conditions, giving the corresponding products in moderate to good yields. This strategy avoids transition-metal catalyst and excessive alcohol, providing a simple and reliable alternative method for the synthesis of methyl/ethyl aryl ether. Control experiments reveal that a radical mechanism is involved in this transformation.

Late stage functionalization of heterocycles using hypervalent iodine(iii) reagents

Late stage functionalization (LSF) through direct X-H manipulations (X = C, N) enables synthetic chemists to accelerate the diversification of natural products, agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals allowing rapid access to novel bioactive molecules without resorting to arduous de novo synthesis. LSF does not only allow tapping of the hitherto unexplored chemical space but also renders the synthetic sequence more straightforward, atom economical and cost-effective. In this regard, the recent decade has witnessed the emergence of hypervalent iodine(iii) reagents as a powerful synthetic tool owing to their easy availability, mild reaction conditions, remarkable oxidizing properties and high functional group tolerance. Iodine(iii) reagents have tremendous applications in the regio- and chemo-selective late-stage functionalization of a diverse variety of heterocycles through an exciting range of transformations, such as oxidative amination, cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC), fluoroalkylation, azidation, halogenation and oxidation. The present review, classified according to the types of synthetic methods involved, encompasses all these recent developments in the field of transition-metal-free iodine(iii)-catalyzed/mediated direct functionalizations of heterocycles with representative examples and insightful mechanistic discussions.

Iron-catalyzed ortho trifluoromethylation of anilines via picolinamide assisted photoinduced C-H functionalization

A convenient, oxidant-free protocol was developed for the ortho trifluoromethylation of aniline via picolinamide assisted Fe-promoted C-H functionalization under ultraviolet irradiation. In this transformation acetone essentially acted as both a solvent to dissolve reactants and a low-cost radical initiator to efficiently generate a CF3 radical from Langlois' reagent. A broad substrate scope was tolerated and picolinamide bearing strong electron withdrawing groups also could be transformed into the corresponding products with acceptable yields. Furthermore, the value of this method has been highlighted via the efficient synthesis of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug floctafenine.

Platinum(ii)-catalyzed selective para C-H alkoxylation of arylamines through a coordinating activation strategy

A highly efficient method to selectively install alkoxy onto the para position of arylamines via a coordinating activation strategy has been reported. Various substrates are compatible, providing the corresponding products in good to excellent yields. This strategy gives an efficient and practical solution for the synthesis of unsymmetrical aryl ethers. A free radical pathway mechanism is advised for transformation.

C5-Regioselective C-H fluorination of 8-aminoquinoline amides and sulfonamides with Selectfluor under metal-free conditions

A novel and efficient regioselective C-H fluorination of 8-aminoquinoline amides and sulfonamides at the C5 position was achieved. Using Selectfluor as a "F" reagent and HOAc as an additive, the reaction proceeds smoothly via a radical pathway. This method features metal-free conditions, a broad substrate scope and operational simplicity.

Organic dye-photocatalyzed fluoroalkylation of heteroarene-N-oxide derivatives

A direct C_Het–H perfluoroalkylation reaction of heteroaromatic-N-oxides has been achieved. Acid-catalyzed transformation of the perfluoroalkylated-N-oxides leads to 2-(perfluoroalkyl)benzo[f][1,3]oxazepines. De-oxygenation of the perfluoroalkylated heteroaromatic-N-oxides affords a regioselective radical perfluoroalkylation protocol.
