Progress on simultaneous photocatalytic degradation of pollutants and production of clean energy: A review

In the current era of severe energy and environmental crises, the need for efficient and sustainable methods to control pollution and promote resource recycling has become increasingly important. Photocatalytic degradation of pollutants and simultaneous production of clean energy is one such approach that has garnered significant attention in recent years. The principle of photocatalysis involves the development of efficient photocatalysts and the efficient utilization of solar energy. The use of organic contaminants can enhance the photocatalytic reactions, leading to the sustainable generation of clean energy. Herein, we provide a comprehensive review of the latest advances in the application of photocatalytic synergized clean energy production in the environmental field. This review highlights the latest developments and achievements in this field, highlighting the potential for this approach to revolutionize the way we approach environmental pollution control and resource recycling. The review focuses on (1) the mechanism of photocatalytic degradation and synergistic energy production, (2) photocatalysts and synthesis strategies, (3) photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction, (4) pollutant degradation, and (5) hydrogen and electricity production. In addition, perspectives on key challenges and opportunities in photocatalysis and clean energy for future developments are proposed. This review provides a roadmap for future research directions and innovations of photocatalysis that could contribute to the development of more sustainable and cleaner energy solutions.

Magnetic Metal Oxide-Based Photocatalysts with Integrated Silver for Water Treatment

In this review, the most recent advances in the field of magnetic composite photocatalysts with integrated plasmonic silver (Ag) is presented, with an overview of their synthesis techniques, properties and photocatalytic pollutant removal applications. Magnetic attributes combined with plasmonic properties in these composites result in enhancements for light absorption, charge-pair generation-separation-transfer and photocatalytic efficiency with the additional advantage of their facile magnetic separation from water solutions after treatment, neutralizing the issue of silver’s inherent toxicity. A detailed overview of the currently utilized synthesis methods and techniques for the preparation of magnetic silver-integrated composites is presented. Furthermore, an extended critical review of the most recent pollutant removal applications of these composites via green photocatalysis technology is presented. From this survey, the potential of magnetic composites integrated with plasmonic metals is highlighted for light-induced water treatment and purification. Highlights: (1) Perspective of magnetic properties combined with plasmon metal attributes; (2) Overview of recent methods for magnetic silver-integrated composite synthesis; (3) Critical view of recent applications for photocatalytic pollutant removal.

Light-Excited Ag-Doped TiO2-CoFe2O4 Heterojunction Applied to Toluene Gas Detection

(1) Background: Toluene gas is widely used in indoor decoration and industrial production, and it not only pollutes the environment but also poses serious health risks. (2) Methods: In this work, TiO₂−CoFe₂O₄−Ag quaternary composite gas-sensing material was prepared using a hydrothermal method to detect toluene. (3) Results: The recombination of electron–hole pairs was suppressed, and the light absorption range was expanded after constructing a heterojunction and doping with Ag, according to ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) diffuse reflectance spectra and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Moreover, in the detection range of toluene gas (3 ppm–50 ppm), the response value of TiO₂−CoFe₂O₄−Ag increased from 2 to 15, which was much higher than that of TiO₂−Ag (1.7) and CoFe₂O₄−Ag (1.7). In addition, the working temperature was reduced from 360 °C to 263 °C. Furthermore, its response/recovery time was 40 s/51 s, its limit of detection was as low as 10 ppb, and its response value to toluene gas was 3–7 times greater than that of other interfering gases under the same test conditions. In addition, the response value to 5 ppm toluene was increased from 3 to 5.5 with the UV wavelength of 395 nm–405 nm. (4) Conclusions: This is primarily due to charge flow caused by heterojunction construction, as well as metal sensitization and chemical sensitization of novel metal doping. This work is a good starting point for improving gas-sensing capabilities for the detection of toluene gas.

New TiO2-doped Cu-Mg spinel-ferrite-based photocatalyst for degrading highly toxic rhodamine B dye in wastewater

The quest for finding an effective photocatalyst for environmental remediation and treatment strategies is attracting considerable attentions from scientists. In this study, a new hybrid material, Cu_0.5Mg_0.5Fe₂O₄-TiO₂, was designed and fabricated using coprecipitation and sol-gel approaches for degrading organic dyes in wastewater. The prepared hybrid materials were fully characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results revealed that the Cu_0.5Mg_0.5Fe₂O₄-TiO₂ hybrid material was successfully synthesized with average particle sizes of 40.09 nm for TiO₂ and 27.9 nm for Cu_0.5Mg_0.5Fe₂O₄. As the calculated bandgap energy of the hybrid material was approximately 2.86 eV, it could harvest photon energy in the visible region. Results indicate that the Cu_0.5Mg_0.5Fe₂O₄-TiO₂ also had reasonable magnetic properties with a saturation magnetization value of 11.2 emu/g, which is a level of making easy separation from the solution by an external magnet. The resultant Cu_0.5Mg_0.5Fe₂O₄-TiO₂ hybrid material revealed better photocatalytic performance for rhodamine B dye (consistent removal rate in the 13.96 × 10^-3 min^-1) compared with free-standing Cu_0.5Mg_0.5Fe₂O₄ and TiO₂ materials. The recyclability and photocatalytic mechanism of Cu_0.5Mg_0.5Fe₂O₄-TiO₂ are also well discussed.

Conversion of a Type-II to a Z-Scheme Heterojunction by Intercalation of a 0D Electron Mediator between the Integrative NiFe2O4/g-C3N4 Composite Nanoparticles: Boosting the Radical Production for Photo-Fenton Degradation

A carbon dot (CD)-intercalated NiFe2O4 (NFO)/graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4, g-CN) ternary Z-scheme heterojunction was synthesized by the facile wet chemical method and used for photo-Fenton degradation. The structural, optical, electrical, vibrational, and morphological properties of the photocatalysts were investigated through various analytical methods. The CD-intercalated heterojunction formation was analyzed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The intercalated CD acted as an electron donor/acceptor, which converted a type-II heterojunction to a Z-scheme heterojunction. The formation of Z-scheme heterojunction was confirmed by the enormous production of radicals (hydroxyl (OH•) and superoxide (O2 -)) and the elemental trapping experiment. In particular, the heterojunction photocatalyst NFO/5g-CN/7.5CD showed the highest photo-Fenton degradation efficiency of 99% for rhodamine B (Rh B) and 93% for tetracycline (TCN) in the presence of H2O2. The charge separation and electron transport behaviors of the photocatalyst were examined by photoluminescence (PL) and photocurrent measurements. In the Z-scheme photo-Fenton system, hydroxyl and superoxide radicals played a vital role in the visible-light-driven degradation process. Hence, the prepared Z-scheme ternary photocatalyst is well suitable for wastewater treatment in practical use.
