Sustainable polyurethane for the remediation of oil spills: a review

Catastrophic oil spill is one of the major issues to the environment. Various methods have been used to treat oil spillage including in situ burning, the use of skimmers, dispersants, bioremediation, dispersing agents, oil sorbents, and biological agents. Application of oil sorbent is one of the effective solutions in oil spill clean-up. Polymers are sustainable extraordinary materials for the treatment of oil spillage due to their special physicochemical characteristics such as high porosity, good hydrophobicity, and reusability. Polymers are modified using suitable chemical reagents and their hydrophobicity is enhanced, making them suitable for oil spill clean-up. The present manuscript is an attempt to summarize the study of chemical modifications done on a polymer polyurethane (PU) for achieving the desirable properties, for efficient oil spill clean-up. A patent analysis has been carried out for the leading countries, top inventors, leading assignees, trends of patent publications, citation analysis, and summary of granted patents in the area of the use of a polymer Polyurethane (PU) for oil spill clean-up.

In situ self-foaming preparation of hydrophobic polyurethane foams for oil/water separation

Superhydrophobic paper with mussel-inspired polydimethylsiloxane–silica nanoparticle coatings for effective oil/water separation

Although various filtration materials with (super)wetting properties have been fabricated for effective oil/water separation, eco-friendly and low-cost materials are still highly desired. This work details the facile preparation of efficient oil–water separation papers with superhydrophobic properties that successfully combine micro/nanoscale hierarchical particles and low surface energy components with porous substrates. The superhydrophilic papers were coated with a polydopamine layer and then immersed in the mixture of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and hydrophobic-silica nanoparticles. The resultant paper can separate oil–water mixtures under gravity driving conditions, where heavy oil penetrates through the sample and water is collected on the surface. And the as-prepared sample had favorable separation efficiency (>99%). More importantly, the oil flux almost remained at the original value after 10 cycles, indicating excellent recyclability. In addition, the as-prepared paper exhibits good stability in acidic, alkaline and salty media.

Designing Carbon Nanotube-Based Oil Absorbing Membranes from Gamma Irradiated and Electrospun Polystyrene Nanocomposites

Carbon-based materials are outstanding candidates for oil spill clean-ups due to their superhydrophobicity, high surface area, chemical inertness, low density, recyclability, and selectivity. The current work deals with the fabrication of membrane oil absorbents based on carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced polystyrene (PS) nanocomposites by electrospinning technique. The spun membranes are also irradiated with the gamma radiation to induce enough crosslinks and thus good polymer-filler interactions. The structural, morphological, and surface properties in addition to the oil/water separation efficiency were investigated by varying the concentration of CNT and the dose of γ-irradiation. Fabricated nanofiber membranes show superior hydrophobicity and selective oil absorption at 0.5 wt.% of CNT concentration. The best mechanical properties are also obtained at this particular concentration and at 15 KGy optimum γ-irradiation dosage. The gamma irradiated PS/0.5 wt.% CNT membrane also exhibits good antibacterial effects against the bacteria, Escherichia coli, in the form of bacterial inhibition rings around the membranes. The present study thus shows the environmental applicability of the fabricated PS/CNT membranes in treating oil-contaminated water.
