Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is not only a well-established toxic gas but also an important small molecule bioregulator in all kingdoms of life. In contemporary biology, H2S is often classified as a "gasotransmitter," meaning that it is an endogenously produced membrane permeable gas that carries out essential cellular processes. Fluorescent probes for H2S and related reactive sulfur species (RSS) detection provide an important cornerstone for investigating the multifaceted roles of these important small molecules in complex biological systems. A now common approach to develop such tools is to develop "activity-based probes" that couple a specific H2S-mediated chemical reaction to a fluorescent output. This Review covers the different types of such probes and also highlights the chemical mechanisms by which each probe type is activated by specific RSS. Common examples include reduction of oxidized nitrogen motifs, disulfide exchange, electrophilic reactions, metal precipitation, and metal coordination. In addition, we also outline complementary activity-based probes for imaging reductant-labile and sulfane sulfur species, including persulfides and polysulfides. For probes highlighted in this Review, we focus on small molecule systems with demonstrated compatibility in cellular systems or related applications. Building from breadth of reported activity-based strategies and application, we also highlight key unmet challenges and future opportunities for advancing activity-based probes for H2S and related RSS.

Abstract
Carbapenems stand as one of the last-resort antibiotics; however, their efficacy is threatened by the rising number and rapid spread of carbapenemases. Effective antimicrobial stewardship thus calls for rapid tests for these enzymes to aid appropriate prescription and infection control. Herein, we report the first effective pan-carbapenemase reporter CARBA-H with a broad scope covering all three Ambler classes. Using a chemical biology approach, we demonstrated that the absence of the 1β-substituent in the carbapenem core is key to pan-carbapenemase recognition, which led to our rational design and probe development. CARBA-H provides a dual colorimetric-fluorogenic response upon carbapenemase-mediated hydrolysis. A clear visual readout can be obtained within 15 min when tested against a panel of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) clinical isolates that notably includes OXA-48 and OXA-181-producing strains. Furthermore, CARBA-H can be applied to the detection of carbapemenase activity in CPE-spiked urine samples.

Abstract
A novel colorimetric and near-infrared fluorescent probe (L) with D-π-A structure derived from 4-diethylaminosalicylaldehyde and 2-(3-cyano-4,5,5-trimethylfuran-2(5H)-ylidene)malononitrile has been developed. Probe L displays highly selective and sensitive recognition for H2S over various anions with a large Stokes shift (96 nm) in DMF/H2O (3/7, v/v, PBS-HCl 10 mM, pH = 7.4). A naked-eye observable color change of L solution from colorless to bluish-purple occurred on treatment with H2S. The potential applications of probe L were evaluated and the results show that probe L can detect H2S vapor and H2S in real water, red wine and living cells.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide is an important gasotransmitter that exhibits various functions in physiological processes. We present a ratiometric fluorescence probe (SN-N3) for H2S by functionalizing naphthalene imide with 4-(azidomethyl)benzene as a H2S recognition moiety and morpholine moiety as a lysosomal targeting unit. After reaction with H2S, the azido moiety is reduced to amine group, and the probe releases the self-immolative linker and regenerates the fluorophore with internal charge transfer effect. SN-N3 is responsive to H2S in a ratiometric mode, exhibiting excellent sensitivity and high selectivity. The probe is demonstrated to be localized in lysosomes with high specificity. More importantly, SN-N3 is successfully demonstrated to image lysosomal H2S in a ratiometric manner. Our design provides a novel tool to image H2S in living cells that would hold great potential in exploring various H2S-related physiological and pathological cellular processes.

Abstract
With singlet oxygen (1O2) as the active agent, photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising technique for the treatment of various tumors and cancers. But it is hampered by the poor selectivity of most traditional photosensitizers (PS). In this review, we present a summary of controllable PDT implemented by regulating singlet oxygen efficiency. Herein, various controllable PDT strategies based on different initiating conditions (such as pH, light, H2O2 and so on) have been summarized and introduced. More importantly, the action mechanisms of controllable PDT strategies, such as photoinduced electron transfer (PET), fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and some physical/chemical means (e.g. captivity and release), are described as a key point in the article. This review provide a general overview of designing novel PS or strategies for effective and controllable PDT.
