Abstract
Interpenetrating networks (IPN)s have been conceived as a biomimetic tool to tune hydrogel mechanical properties to the desired target formulations. In this study, the rheological behavior of acrylamide (AAm) [2.5-10%] hydrogels crosslinked with N,N'-methylenebis(acrylamide) (Bis) [0.0625-0.25%] was characterized in terms of the saturation modulus affected by the interaction of silica nanoparticle (SiNP) nanofillers [0-5%] and dextran [0-2%] at a frequency of 1 Hz and strain rate of 1% after a gelation period of 90 min. For single-network hydrogels, a prominent transition was observed at 0.125% Bis for 2.5% AAm and 0.25% Bis for 5% AAm across the SiNP concentrations and was validated by retrospective 3-level factorial design models, as characterized by deviation from linearity in the saturation region (R2 = 0.86). IPN hydrogels resulting from the addition of dextran to the single network in the pre-saturation region, as outlined by the strong goodness of fit (R2= 0.99), exhibited a correlated increase in the elastic (G') and viscous moduli (G"). While increasing the dextran concentrations [0-2%] and MW [100 kDa and 500 kDa] regulated the increase in G', saturation in G" or the loss tangent (tan(δ)) was not recorded within the observed operating windows. Results of multifactor analysis conducted on Han plots in terms of the elastic gains indicate that amongst the factors modulating the viscoelasticity of the IPN hydrogels, dextran concentration is the most important (RDex = 35.3 dB), followed by nanoparticle concentration (RSiNP = 7.7 dB) and dextran molecular weight (RMW = 2.9 dB). The results demonstrate how the Han plot may be systematically used to quantify the main effects of intensive thermodynamic properties on rheological phase transition in interpenetrating networks where traditional multifactor analyses cannot resolve statistical significance.

Abstract
Nanocomposite double-network hydrogels (ncDN hydrogels) have been demonstrated as promising biomaterials to present several desired properties (e.g., high mechanical strength, stimuli-responsiveness, and local therapy) for biomedicine. Here, a new type of ncDN hydrogels featuring definable microstructures and properties as well as multistimuli responsiveness for controlled release applications is developed. Amine-functionalized iron oxide nanoparticles (IOPs_NH2 ) are used as nanoparticle cross-linkers to simultaneously connect the dual networks of gelatin (Gel) and polydextran aldehyde (PDA) through hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, and dynamic imine bonds. The pH- and temperature-responsive Gel/PDA/IOP_NH2 ncDN hydrogels present a fast release profile of proteins at acidic pH and high temperature. Besides, IOP_NH2 also contributes the magnetic-responsiveness to the ncDN hydrogels, allowing the use of magnetic field to generate heat to facilitate the structural change of hydrogels and the subsequent applications. Taken together, a versatile ncDN hydrogel platform capable of multistimuli responsiveness and local heating for controlled release is developed for advanced biomedical applications.

Abstract
Nanocomposite (NC) hydrogels are promising biomaterials that possess versatile properties and functions for biomedical applications such as drug delivery, biosensor development, imaging and tissue engineering. Different strategies and chemistries have been utilized to define the structure and properties of NC hydrogels. In this review, we discuss NC hydrogels synthesized using dynamic bonds, including dynamic covalent bonds (e.g., Schiff base and boronate ester bond) and non-covalent bonds (e.g., hydrogen bonds and metal-ligand coordination). Dynamic bonds can reversibly break and reform to provide self-healing properties to NC hydrogels as well as be influenced by external factors to allow NC hydrogels with stimulus-responsiveness. The presence of dynamic bonds in NC hydrogels can occur at the polymer-polymer or polymer-particle interfaces, which also determines whether the particles act as fillers or crosslinkers in hydrogels. Several representative examples of NC hydrogels fabricated using dynamic bonds are discussed here, focusing on their design, preparation, properties, applications and future prospects. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: This review provides an overview of the current progress in NC hydrogel development using dynamic bonds, summarizing the material design, fabrication approaches, unique performance and promising biomedical applications. The presence of both nanoparticles and dynamic bonds in hydrogels shows a combined or synergistic effect to provide hydrogels with dynamic features, definable properties, multi-functionality and stimulus-responsiveness for advanced applications. We believe that this review will be of interest to the hydrogel community and inspire researchers to develop next-generation hydrogels.

Abstract
Nanocomposite double-network hydrogels (ncDN hydrogels) are recently introduced to address the limitations of traditional DN hydrogels, such as the lack of diversity in the network structure and the restricted functionalities. However, two challenges remain, including the time-consuming preparation and the lack of shear-thinning and self-healing properties. Here, our approach to developing versatile ncDN hydrogels is through the use of multiple interfacial crosslinking chemistries (i.e., noncovalent interactions of electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonds as well as dynamic covalent interactions of imine bonds and boronate ester bonds) and surface functionalized nanomaterials (i.e. phenylboronic acid modified reduced graphene oxide (PBA-rGO)). PBA-rGO was used as a multivalent gelator to further crosslink the two polymer chains (i.e. triethylene glycol-grafted chitosan (TEG-CS) and polydextran aldehyde (PDA)) in DN hydrogels, forming the TEG-CS/PDA/PBA-rGO ncDN hydrogels in seconds. The microstructures (i.e. pore size) and properties (i.e. rheological, mechanical, and swelling properties) of the ncDN hydrogels can be simply modulated by changing the amount of PBA-rGO. The dynamic bonds in the polymeric network provided the shear-thinning and self-healing properties to the ncDN hydrogels, allowing the hydrogels to be injected and molded into varied shapes as well as self-repair the damaged structure. Besides, the designed TEG-CS/PDA/PBA-rGO ncDN hydrogels were cytocompatible and also exhibited antibacterial activity. Taken together, we hereby provide a nanomaterial approach to fabricate a new class of ncDN hydrogels with tailorable networks and favorite properties for specific applications.

Abstract
Extensive experimental and theoretical research over the past several decades has pursued strategies to develop hydrogels with high mechanical strength. Our study investigated the effect of combining two approaches, addition of nanoparticles and crosslinking two different polymers (to create double-network hydrogels), on the mechanical properties of hydrogels. Our studies revealed that these orthogonal approaches may be combined to synthesize hydrogel composites with enhanced mechanical properties. However, the enhancement in double network hydrogel elastic modulus due to incorporation of nanoparticles is limited by the ability of the nanoparticles to strongly interact with the polymers in the network. Moreover, double-network hydrogel nanocomposites prepared using lower monomer concentrations showed higher enhancements in elastic moduli compared to those prepared using high monomer concentrations, thus indicating that the concentration of hydrogel monomers used for the preparation of the nanocomposites had a significant effect on the extent of nanoparticle-mediated enhancements. Collectively, these results demonstrate that the hypotheses previously developed to understand the role of nanoparticles on the mechanical properties of hydrogel nanocomposites may be extended to double-network hydrogel systems and guide the development of next-generation hydrogels with extraordinary mechanical properties through a combination of different approaches.

Abstract
Injectable, in situ-forming hydrogels can improve cell delivery in tissue engineering applications by facilitating minimally invasive delivery to irregular defect sites and improving cell retention and survival. Tissues targeted for cell delivery often undergo diverse mechanical loading including high stress, high strain, and repetitive loading conditions. This review focuses on the development of hydrogel systems that meet the requirements of mechanical resiliency, cytocompatibility, and injectability for such applications. First, we describe the most important design considerations for maintaining the viability and function of encapsulated cells, for reproducing the target tissue morphology, and for achieving degradation profiles that facilitate tissue replacement. Models describing the relationships between hydrogel structure and mechanical properties are described, focusing on design principles necessary for producing mechanically resilient hydrogels. The advantages and limitations of current strategies for preparing cytocompatible, injectable, and mechanically resilient hydrogels are reviewed, including double networks, nanocomposites, and high molecular weight amphiphilic copolymer networks. Finally, challenges and opportunities are outlined to guide future research in this developing field.

Abstract
Direct discharge of industry organic dyes has caused serious environmental pollution. In this study, a series of double network poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) hydrogels were fabricated with spherical polymer brushes (SPBs) and chitosan (CS) as crosslinker. Neutral spherical polyelectrolyte brushes of polystyrene–poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM@PS) in which poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) arms were grafted on polystyrene (PS) nanospheres, were employed as macro-crosslinkers. The innumerable hydrogen bonds both between the highly entangled PAA chains and between PNIPAM and the PAA chains composed the first network of the hydrogels. The electrostatic interactions between CS and the PAA chains formed the second network of the hydrogels. These double network hydrogels, named PNIPAM@PS/CS/PAA, achieve good compressive performance and a low swell ratio because of their compact structure through plentiful hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. The hydrogel could absorb cationic dyes from water with high separation efficiency and selectivity due to the electrostatic interaction between the carboxy groups and dye molecules. The adsorption process fitted a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model very well. Moreover, the hydrogel can separate cationic dyes from mixed dye solutions through electrostatic interactions. After being loaded with silver nanoparticles, the obtained silver@hydrogel exhibited a good capacity for the photocatalytic degradation towards different dyes. The hydrogels are promising for dye-containing wastewater treatment.

Abstract
The introduction of SiO2 particles as crosslinking points into hydrogels has been recognized as a suitable way for toughening hydrogels, due to their versatile functionalization and large specific surface area. However, chemically linked SiO2 nanocomposite hydrogels often exhibited negligible fatigue resistance and poor self-recoverable properties due to the irreversible cleavage of covalent bonds. Here, we proposed a novel strategy to improve stretchability, fatigue resistance and self-recoverable properties of hydrogels by using SiO2-g-poly(butyl acrylate) core-shell inorganic-organic hybrid latex particles as hydrophobic crosslinking centers for hydrophobic association. The obtained hydrogel could distribute the surrounding applied stress by disentanglement of the hybrid latex particles from hydrophobic segments. Based on this strategy, the formulated hydrogels showed an excellent tensile strength of 1.48 MPa, superior stretchability of 2511% and remarkable toughness of 12.62 MJ m-3. Moreover, the hydrogels owned extraordinary anti-fatigue, rapid self-recovery and puncture resistance properties. Therefore, this strategy provided a novel pathway for developing advanced soft materials with potential applications in biomedical engineering, such as tendons, muscles, cartilages, etc.
