Abstract
A catanionic surfactant system is an aqueous solution or dispersion of cationic and anionic surfactants that spontaneously self-assemble into structures such as micelles, vesicles, and coacervates. Their structural diversity varies depending on the ratios of cationic and anionic surfactants (compositions), the chemical structure of the constituent molecules, etc. Herein, two types of catanionic surfactant systems were systematically characterized: (i) cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), both typical ionic surfactants; and (ii) dodecylmethylimidazolium ammonium bromide ([C12mim]Br) and SDS, where the former is an ionic liquid. By observing the sample appearance, turbidity, and particle size, the phase state of each system was analyzed according to the total concentration of surfactants and the molar ratio of cationic surfactants to the total concentration. Especially, for specific compositions of catanionic surfactant vesicles (cataniosome), the closed structure of the vesicles was confirmed through calcein entrapment and release detected with a fluorescence assay. The polarities of the interface of the prepared self-assemblies were evaluated using a fluorescence probe, Laurdan. The packing state of the molecules in the formed self-assembly structure was estimated using Raman spectroscopy. The results clearly indicate consistent phase-transition behavior for the CTAB-SDS (i) and [C12mim]Br-SDS (ii) systems, depending on the total surfactant concentration and composition, while the membrane properties of the two systems differed. The cataniosome formed in the CTAB-SDS system was in a tightly packed membrane state and more hydrophobic than that formed in the [C12mim]Br-SDS system owing to the difference in the structure of the constituting molecule: [C12mim]Br has a larger head group and shorter acyl chain than CTAB. The self-assembly properties evaluated in this study were compared with those of typical lipid membranes, liposomes (lipid vesicles), to determine a possible application of the catanionic systems with various self-assembly formulations.

Abstract
Their stability and low cost make catanionic vesicles suitable for application as drug delivery systems. In this work we prepared catanionic vesicles using biocompatible surfactants: two cationic arginine-based surfactants (the monocatenary Nα-lauroyl-arginine methyl ester-LAM and the gemini Nα,Nϖ-bis(Nα-lauroylarginine) α, ϖ-propylendiamide-C3(CA)2) and three anionic amphiphiles (the single chain sodium dodecanoate, sodium myristate, and the double chain 8-SH). The critical aggregation concentration, colloidal stability, size, and charge density of these systems were comprehensively studied for the first time. These catanionic vesicles, which form spontaneously after mixing two aqueous solutions of oppositely charged surfactants, exhibited a monodisperse population of medium-size aggregates and good stability. The antimicrobial and hemolytic activity of the vesicles can be modulated by changing the cationic/anionic surfactant ratio. Vesicles with a positive charge efficiently killed Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria as well as yeasts; the antibacterial activity declined with the decrease of the cationic charge density. The catanionic systems also effectively eradicated MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms. Interestingly, the incorporation of cholesterol in the catanionic mixtures improved the stability of these colloidal systems and considerably reduced their cytotoxicity without affecting their antimicrobial activity. Additionally, these catanionic vesicles showed good DNA affinity. Their antimicrobial efficiency and low hemolytic activity render these catanionic vesicles very promising candidates for biomedical applications.

Abstract
Self-assembled structures formed by mixtures of cationic and anionic surfactants are interesting tools for applications requiring interactions with charged particles and molecules. Nevertheless, they present instability close to the equimolar composition and poor morphological versatility, which is generally restricted to vesicles and micelles. Against this general trend, we report on bile salt derivative based catanionic mixtures assembling in tubules and lamellae depending on the mixture composition. Electrophoretic mobility measurements prove that the composition also dictates their superficial charge, which can be tuned from negative to positive by increasing the positively charged surfactant fraction in the mixtures. The study of the catanionic aggregates was conducted by means of microscopy and spectroscopy techniques and compared to the self-assembly behaviors of the individual building blocks. This study broadens the so far small array of bile salt derivative catanionic systems, confirming their distinctive behavior in the spectrum of catanionic mixtures.

Abstract
A simple and reliable supramolecule-aggregated liquid solid microextraction method is described for preconcentration and determination of trace amounts of bismuth in water as well as human blood serum and hair samples. Catanionic microstructures of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactants, dissolved in deionized water/propanol, are used as a green solvent to extract bismuth (III)-diethyldithiocarbamate complexes by dispersive microextraction methodology. The extracted solid phase is easily removed and dissolved in 50 μL propanol for subsequent measurement by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ET-AAS). The procedure benefits the merits of supramolecule aggregates' properties and dispersive microextraction technique using water as the main component of disperser solvent, leading to direct interaction with analyte. Phase separation behavior of extraction solvent and different parameters influencing the extraction efficiency of bismuth ion such as salt concentration, pH, centrifugation time, amount of chelating agent, SDS:CTAB mole ratio, and solvent amounts were thoroughly optimized. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the calibration curve was linear in the range of 0.3-6 μg L-1 Bi (III) with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.16 μg L-1 (S/N = 3). The relative standard deviations (RSD) of determination were obtained to be 5.1 and 6.2 % for 1 and 3 μg L-1 of Bi (III), respectively. The developed method was successfully applied as a sensitive and accurate technique for determination of bismuth ion in human blood serum, hair samples, and a certified reference material.
