Abstract
Binding energies are traditionally simulated using cluster models by computation of each synthon for each individual co-crystal former. However, our investigation of the binding strengths using the electron localization function (ELF) reveals that these can be determined directly from the crystal supercell computations. We propose a new modeling protocol for the computation of physical binding energies directly from bulk simulations using ELF analysis. In this work, we establish a correlation between ELF values and binding energies calculated for co-crystals of 4-hydroxyphenylboronic acid (4HPBA) with four different aza donors using density functional theory with varying descriptions of dispersion. Boronic acids are gaining significant interest in the field of crystal engineering, but theoretical studies on their use in materials are still very limited. Here, we present a systematic investigation of the non-covalent interactions in experimentally realized co-crystals. Prior diffraction studies on these complexes have shown the competitive nature between the boronic acid functional group and the para-substituted phenolic group forming heteromeric interactions with aza donors. We determine the stability of the co-crystals by simulating their lattice energies, and the different dispersion descriptions show similar trends in lattice energies and lattice parameters. Our study bolsters the experimental observation of the boronic acid group as a competitive co-crystal former in addition to the well-studied phenolic group. Further research on correlating ELF values for physical binding could potentially transform this approach to a viable alternative for the computation of binding energies.

Abstract
In the title compound, C7H6BNO2, the mean plane of the -B(OH)2 group is twisted by 21.28 (6)° relative to the cyano-phenyl ring mean plane. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked by O-H⋯O and O-H⋯N hydrogen bonds, forming chains propagating along the [101] direction. Offset π-π and B⋯π stacking inter-actions link the chains, forming a three-dimensional network. Hirshfeld surface analysis shows that van der Waals inter-actions constitute a further major contribution to the inter-molecular inter-actions, with H⋯H contacts accounting for 25.8% of the surface.

Abstract
Because of the peculiar dynamic covalent reactivity of boronic acids to form tetraboronate derivatives, interest in using their aryl derivatives in materials science and supramolecular chemistry has risen. Nevertheless, their ability to form H-bonded complexes has been only marginally touched. Herein we report the first solution and solid-state binding studies of the first double-H-bonded DD·AA-type complexes of a series of aromatic boronic acids that adopt a syn-syn conformation with suitable complementary H-bonding acceptor partners. The first determination of the association constant (Ka) of ortho-substituted boronic acids in solution showed that Ka for 1:1 association is in the range between 300 and 6900 M-1. Crystallization of dimeric 1:1 and trimeric 1:2 and 2:1 complexes enabled an in-depth examination of these complexes in the solid state, proving the selection of the -B(OH)2 syn-syn conformer through a pair of frontal H-bonds with the relevant AA partner. Non-ortho-substituted boronic acids result in "flat" complexes. On the other hand, sterically demanding analogues bearing ortho substituents strive to retain their recognition properties by rotation of the ArB(OH)2 moiety, forming "T-shaped" complexes. Solid-state studies of a diboronic acid and a tetraazanaphthacene provided for the first time the formation of a supramolecular H-bonded polymeric ribbon. On the basis of the conformational dynamicity of the -B(OH)2 functional group, it is expected that these findings will also open new possibilities in metal-free catalysis or organic crystal engineering, where double-H-bonding donor boronic acids could act as suitable organocatalysts or templates for the development of functional materials with tailored organizational properties.
