Study on tri-imidazole derivatives modified with triazine-trione structure as latent curing agents for epoxy resin

Abstract

In this paper, four novel kinds of triazine-trione based tri-imidazole derivatives (IM-TT, 2MI-TT, 2EI-TT and EMI-TT) were synthesized through the addition reaction between triglycidyl isocyanurate (TGIC) and imidazole (IM), 2-methylimidazole (2MI), 2-ethylimidazole (2EI) and 2-ethyl-4-methylimidazole (EMI), respectively. The triazine-trione based tri-imidazole derivatives were blended with epoxy resin and the reactivity, thermal latency and thermal property were investigated. The results on curing behaviors indicated that the curing exothermic peaks of the blends with triazine-trione based tri-imidazole derivatives shifted to higher temperatures compared with those with commercial imidazoles. The curing exothermic peak temperatures (Tps) of the synthesized tri-imidazole derivatives were increased by 23–32 ℃ compared with the unmodified imidazoles. In addition, Rheological behavior results indicated that the EP blends with tri-imidazole derivatives also exhibited excellent storage stability which was as long as 38 days under room temperature. Last but not the least, the EP blends with triazine-trione based tri-imidazole derivatives also exhibited high glass transition temperatures due to introducing of triazine-trione structures with high crosslinking density. The glass transition temperatures (Tgs) of the prepared thermosets ranged from 128 to 152 ℃. The triazine-trione based tri-imidazole derivatives provide a way to prepare latency epoxy resin with high high glass transition temperature and long storage stability.

Base-triggered self-amplifying degradable polyurethanes with the ability to translate local stimulation to continuous long-range degradation

A new type of base-triggered self-amplifying degradable polyurethane is reported that degrades under mild conditions, with the release of increasing amounts of amine product leading to self-amplified degradation. The polymer incorporates a base-sensitive Fmoc-derivative into every repeating unit to enable highly sensitive amine amplified degradation. A sigmoidal degradation curve for the linear polymer was observed consistent with a self-amplifying degradation mechanism. An analogous cross-linked polyurethane gel was prepared and also found to undergo amplified breakdown. In this case, a trace amount of localized base initiates the degradation, which in turn propagates through the material in an amplified manner. The results demonstrate the potential utility of these new generation polyurethanes in enhanced disposability and as stimuli responsive materials.

Temperature-Dependent Enhancement Effects for TBD (1,5,7-Triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene) with 2-Methylimidazole-Intercalated α-Zirconium Phosphate as a Latent Thermal Initiator in the Reaction of Glycidyl Phenyl Ether

The catalytic effects of 1,1,3,3-Tetramethylguanidine (TMG), 1,5,7-Triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (TBD), 7-Methyl-1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene (MTBD), 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU), and 1,5-diazabicyclo[4.3.0]non-5-ene (DBN) in the reaction with glycidyl phenyl ether (GPE) at 40 °C were investigated. For the reaction, the %conversion of GPE was only 11%, carried out at 40 °C over 14 days in the presence of TBD.Additionally, there was little catalytic activity for the same reaction performed under typical storage conditions at 25 °C. The effect of TBD with 2-methylimidazole-intercalated α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP∙2MIm), as a latent thermal initiating system in the reaction with GPE, was then examined. The reaction did not proceed within 1 h at 80 °C. On increasing the temperature to 120 °C, the %conversion reached 75% for reaction at 1 h. Under typical storage conditions (7 days at 25 °C), the %conversion of GPE was only 7%. With addition of TBD to α-ZrP∙2MIm, reagent stability was maintained, and the polymerization reaction proceeded rapidly with the application of heat.
