Recent Advances in Heterogeneous Catalytic Systems Containing Metal Ions for Phosphate Ester Hydrolysis

Organophosphates are a class of organic compounds that are important for living organisms, forming the building blocks for DNA, RNA, and some essential cofactors. Furthermore, non-natural organophosphates are widely used in industrial applications, including as pesticides; in laundry detergents; and, unfortunately, as chemical weapons agents. In some cases, the natural degradation of organophosphates can take thousands of years; this longevity creates problems associated with handling and the storage of waste generated by such phosphate esters, in particular. Efforts to develop new catalysts for the cleavage of phosphate esters have progressed in recent decades, mainly in the area of homogeneous catalysis. In contrast, the development of heterogeneous catalysts for the hydrolysis of organophosphates has not been as prominent. Herein, examples of heterogeneous systems are described and the importance of the development of heterogeneous catalysts applicable to organophosphate hydrolysis is highlighted, shedding light on recent advances related to different solid matrices that have been employed.

A post-synthetically modified metal–organic framework for copper catalyzed denitrative C–N coupling of nitroarenes under heterogeneous conditions

Post-synthesis modification of DMOF, afforded a desired material for strategic infusion of catalytically active centers in a porous matrix. The catalyst is capable for denitrative C–N coupling reactions of nitroarenes under heterogeneous conditions.

Light-emitting diode light–enabled denitrative etherification of 4-nitrobenzonitrile under catalyst-free conditions at room temperature

In this study, we have developed a catalyst-free procedure for denitrative etherification of electron-deficient nitroarenes. In this method, the reaction failed in the dark but was enabled by white light-emitting diode light (6 W) in the presence of NaOH/dimethylformamide at room temperature with short reaction times. Interestingly, the reaction in the dark is completed almost immediately once a small quantity of water is added to the reaction mixture. Ultraviolet irradiation (λ = 254 nm) was not effective for this reaction to proceed.

Comparative structure activity relationship for heterogeneous phosphatase-like catalytic activities of one-dimensional Cu(ii) coordination polymers

A structure activity relationship for heterogeneous phosphatase-like activities of one-dimensional Cu(ii) coordination polymers, has been studied. Complex 1 exhibits maximum activity due to coordinated water molecules, shorter metal–metal distance and exposed metal centers.
