Abstract
We disclose herein a catalytic borrowing hydrogen method that enables an unprecedented, economical one-pot access to enantiopure tetrahydropyridines with minimal reagent use or waste formation. This method couples a few classes of readily available substrates with commercially available 1,3-amino alcohols, and delivers the valuable tetrahydropyridines of different substitution patterns free of N-protection. Such transformations are highly challenging to achieve, as multiple redox steps need to be realized in a cascade and numerous side reactions including a facile aromatization have to be overcome. Highly diastereoselective functionalizations of tetrahydropyridines also result in a general access to enantiopure di- and tri-substituted piperidines, which ranks the topmost frequent N-heterocycle in commercial drugs.

Abstract
The chemistry related to the exploration of cyclic N-sulfonyl ketimines and their derivatives has attracted significant attention in the last few decades because of their intriguing structures and properties. They serve broadly as reactive synthons in various reactions to create a diverse set of synthetically and biologically attractive molecules. Furthermore, these moieties, which possess multiple heteroatoms (N, O and S), display or can enhance many biological activities. In the case of synthetic reactions, chemists mainly focus on the chemical manipulation of the highly reactive prochiral CN bond of N-sulfonyl ketimines. Besides their traditional role as electrophiles, N-sulfonyl ketimines possess α-Csp3-H protons, and thus behave as potential carbonucleophiles, where they can undergo several C-X (X = C, N and O) bond-forming reactions with different types of electrophiles under various conditions to form a wide range of fascinating asymmetric and non-asymmetric versions of fused heterocycles, carbocycles, spiro-fused skeletons, pyridines, pyrroles, etc. Herein, we highlight the recent examples from our research work and others covering the scope of cyclic N-sulfonyl ketimines as useful carbonucleophiles. In addition, the detailed mechanistic studies of the above-mentioned reactions are also presented.

Abstract
Aromatic α-aminoazaheterocycles are the focus of significant investigations and exploration by researchers owing to their key role in diverse biological and physiological processes. The existence of their derivatives in numerous drugs and alkaloids is due to their heterocyclic nitrogenous nature. Therefore, the synthesis of a structurally diverse range of their derivatives through simple and convenient methods represents a vital field of synthetic organic chemistry. Multicomponent reactions (MCRs) provide a platform to introduce desirable structure diversity and complexity into a molecule in a single operation with a significant reduction in the use of harmful organic waste, and hence have attracted particular attention as an excellent tool to access these derivatives. This review covers the advances made from 2010 to the beginning of 2020 in terms of the utilization of α-aminoazaheterocycles as synthetic precursors in MCRs.

Abstract
Owing to the environmental concern worldwide and also due to cost, time and labour issues, use of one-pot reactions [domino/cascade/tandem/multi-component (MC) or sequential] has gained much attention among the scientific and industrial communities for the generation of compound libraries having different scaffolds. Inclusion of sugars in such compounds is expected to increase the pharmacological efficacy because of the possibility of better interactions with the receptors of such unnatural glycoconjugates. In many of the one-pot transformations, the presence of a metal salt/complex can improve the reaction/change the course of reaction with remarkable increase in chemo-/regio-/stereo-selectivity. On the other hand because of the importance of natural polymeric glycoconjugates in life processes, the development and efficient synthesis of related oligosaccharides, particularly utilising one-pot MC-glycosylation techniques are necessary. The present review is an endeavour to discuss one-pot transformations involving carbohydrates catalysed by a metal salt/complex.

Abstract
A novel five-component diastereoselective synthesis of polysubstituted 2-piperidinones is reported. The Knoevenagel condensation-Michael addition-Mannich cascade of two equivalents of aromatic aldehydes, nitriles, dialkyl malonates and ammonium acetate or aqueous ammonia in alcohols provides convenient access to alkyl (3SR,4RS,6SR)-5,5-dicyano-2-oxo-4,6-diarylpiperidine-3-carboxylates with three stereocenters in 52-90% or dialkyl (2SR,3RS,4RS,5SR)-2,4-diaryl-3-cyano-6-oxopiperidine-3,5-dicarboxylates with four stereocenters in 38-88%. The formation of products was highly stereoselective, with only one diastereomer formed. Ammonium acetate or aqueous ammonia plays a role both as a catalyst and as a nitrogen source. 2,4,6-triaryl-3,3,5,5-tetracyanopiperidines were obtained as a side products in the reactions with nitro-substituted aldehydes or with ethyl and n-propyl cyanoacetates. A series of 14 2-piperidinones and piperidines was assessed for antimicrobial activity against a panel of five bacteria and two fungi; no significant activity was observed. Two side piperidines with nitro substituents in aromatic ring possess bacteriostatic action against S. aureus ATCC 43300 and A. baumannii ATCC 19606 at 32 ug/mL.

Abstract
An efficient and cost-effective method was developed for the synthesis of two kinds of fused 4H-pyran derivatives, namely, dihydropyrano[2,3-c]pyrazole 4 and pyrano[3,2-c]chromenone 6. The reactions of 3-methyl-1-phenyl-5-pyrazolone/4-hydroxycoumarin with aromatic aldehydes and (E)-N-methyl-1-(methylthio)-2-nitroethenamine (NMSM), involving the Knoevenagel, Michael-addition, O-cyclization and elimination reactions under thermal heating, afforded the desired products. The synthesized compounds were characterized by standard spectroscopic techniques. Further, the structures of pyrazole-fused 4H-pyran 4a and coumarin-fused 4H-pyran 6b were confirmed by single-crystal XRD analysis. The short reaction time, good-to-excellent yields, elimination of the use of expensive, metallic and toxic catalysts or hazardous organic solvents and high atom-economy are some noteworthy features of this protocol. A practical and greener method for the synthesis of highly functionalized pyrazole and coumarin fused 4H-pyran derivatives by exploring NMSM under neat conditions at 110 °C is described.![]()

Abstract
There is demand for safer and bio-based solvents, brought on by legislation and sustainability objectives. The prediction of physical properties is highly desirable to help design new molecules. Here we present an in silico approach to obtain calculated Kamlet-Abboud-Taft solvatochromic parameters using virtual experiments. The tautomerisation equilibrium of methyl acetoacetate and dimedone was calculated in different solvents with COSMO-RS theory and converted into estimates of solvent dipolarity and hydrogen bond accepting ability, respectively. Hydrogen bond donating ability was calculated as a function of the electron deficient surface area on protic solvents. These polarity descriptors correlate with rate constants and equilibria, and so ability of calculated Kamlet-Abboud-Taft solvatochromic parameters to recreate experimental free energy relationships was tested with sixteen case studies taken from the literature. The accuracy of the calculated parameters was also satisfactory for solvent selection, as demonstrated with a 1,4-addition reaction and a multicomponent heterocycle synthesis.

Abstract
An eco-friendly and cost-effective, microwave-assisted green approach has been developed for the synthesis of diverse functionalized N-methyl-1,4-dihydropyridines (1,4-DHPs). This pseudo three-component reaction was carried out between two equivalents of (E)-N-methyl-1-(methylthio)-2-nitroethenamine (NMSM) and one equivalent of aromatic aldehydes under microwave irradiation at 100 °C without catalyst and solvent. Short reaction times, avoidance of toxic solvents or expensive, metallic and corrosive catalysts and no need for column chromatographic purification are among the valuable features of the presented method. Moreover, the “greenness” of the method was evaluated within the ambits of the defined green metrics such as atom economy, carbon efficiency, E-factor, reaction mass efficiency, overall efficiency, process mass intensity and solvent intensity and the method exhibited a good to excellent score. With the growing interest in renewable energy and global warming, it is important to minimize the usage of hazardous chemicals in both academic and industrial research, elimination of waste, and possibly recycle them to obtain better results in greener fashion. The studies under the area of mechanochemistry which cover the grinding chemistry to ball milling, sonication, etc. are certainly of interest to the researchers working on the development of green methodologies. In this review, a collection of examples on recent developments in organic bond formation reactions like carbon–carbon (C–C), carbon–nitrogen (C–N), carbon–oxygen (C–O), carbon–halogen (C–X), etc. is documented. Mechanochemical syntheses of heterocyclic rings, multicomponent reactions and organometallic molecules including their catalytic applications are also highlighted.

Abstract
Unsymmetrical 1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridine-3-carboxylates were obtained for the first time from a five-component Fe3O4@TDSN-Bi(III)-catalyzed reaction of aryl aldehydes, aryl amines, and ethyl acetoacetate. This magnetically separable catalyst enabled the selective incorporation of two different aryl amines or two different aryl aldehydes into the product, and provided excellent yields, short reaction times, mild reaction conditions, satisfactory catalyst recyclability, and low catalyst loading.
