Conjugated Microporous Polymers for Catalytic CO2 Conversion

Rising carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the atmosphere are recognized as a threat to atmospheric stability and life. Although this greenhouse gas is being produced on a large scale, there are solutions to reduction and indeed utilization of the gas. Many of these solutions involve costly or unstable technologies, such as air-sensitive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for CO2 capture or "non-green" systems such as amine scrubbing. Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) represent a simpler, cheaper, and greener solution to CO2 capture and utilization. They are often easy to synthesize at scale (a one pot reaction in many cases), chemically and thermally stable (especially in comparison with their MOF and covalent organic framework (COF) counterparts, owing to their amorphous nature), and, as a result, cheap to manufacture. Furthermore, their large surface areas, tunable porous frameworks and chemical structures mean they are reported as highly efficient CO2 capture motifs. In addition, they provide a dual pathway to utilize captured CO2 via chemical conversion or electrochemical reduction into industrially valuable products. Recent studies show that all these attractive properties can be realized in metal-free CMPs, presenting a truly green option. The promising results in these two fields of CMP applications are reviewed and explored here.

Synthesis of unsymmetrically and symmetrically functionalized disiloxanes via subsequent hydrosilylation of C≡C bonds

A selective synthesis of unsymmetrically functionalized disiloxanes via the subsequent hydrosilylation of internal alkynes in the first step, and alkynes (terminal or internal) or 1,3-diynes in the second, with 1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane (1) is presented for the first time. Using developed approaches performed in a stepwise or one-pot manner a new family of disubstituted disiloxanes was obtained which had previously been inaccessible by other synthetic methods. Moreover, symmetrically functionalized disiloxanes were obtained by direct hydrosilylation of 2 equivalents of terminal or internal alkynes with 1, showing the unique versatility of the hydrosilylation process. Three examples of symmetric disiloxanes were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction for the first time. As a result, a wide group of new compounds which can find potential applications as building blocks or coupling agents was obtained and characterized.

Hydrosilylation of Terminal Alkynes Catalyzed by an Air-Stable Manganese-NHC Complex

In recent years, catalysis with base metal manganese has received a significant amount of interest. Catalysis with manganese complexes having N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) is relatively underdeveloped in comparison to the extensively investigated manganese catalysts possessing pincer ligands (particularly phosphine-based ligands). Herein, we describe the synthesis of two imidazolium salts decorated with picolyl arms (L₁ and L₂) as NHC precursors. Facile coordination of L₁ and L₂ with MnBr(CO)₅ in the presence of a base resulted in the formation manganese(I)-NHC complexes (1 and 2) as an air-stable solid in good isolated yield. Single-crystal X-ray analysis revealed the structure of the cationic complexes [Mn(CO)₃(NHC)][PF₆] with tridentate N,C,N binding of the NHC ligand in a facile fashion. Along with a few known manganese(I) complexes, these Mn(I)-NHC complexes 1 and 2 were tested for the hydrosilylation of terminal alkynes. Complex 1 was proved to be an effective catalyst for the hydrosilylation of terminal alkynes with good selectivity toward the less thermodynamically stable β-(Z)-vinylsilanes. This method provided good regioselectivity (anti-Markovnikov addition) and stereoselectivity (β-(Z)-product). Experimental evidence suggested that the present hydrosilylation pathway involved an organometallic mechanism with manganese(I)-silyl species as a possible reactive intermediate.

N-Heterocyclic carbenes and their precursors in functionalised porous materials

Though N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have emerged as diverse and powerful discrete functional molecules in pharmaceutics, nanotechnology, and catalysis over decades, the heterogenization of NHCs and their precursors for broader applications in porous materials, like metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), porous coordination polymers (PCPs), covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), porous organic polymers (POPs), and porous organometallic cages (POMCs) was not extensively studied until the last ten years. By de novo or post-synthetic modification (PSM) methods, myriads of NHCs and their precursors containing building blocks were designed and integrated into MOFs, PCPs, COFs, POPs and POMCs to form various structures and porosities. Functionalisation with NHCs and their precursors significantly expands the scope of the potential applications of porous materials by tuning the pore surface chemical/physical properties, providing active sites for binding guest molecules and substrates and realizing recyclability. In this review, we summarise and discuss the recent progress on the synthetic methods, structural features, and promising applications of NHCs and their precursors in functionalised porous materials. At the end, a brief perspective on the encouraging future prospects and challenges in this contemporary field is presented. This review will serve as a guide for researchers to design and synthesize more novel porous materials functionalised with NHCs and their precursors.

Porous Organic Polymers for Catalytic Conversion of Carbon Dioxide

To overcome the challenges of global warming and environmental pollution, it is necessary to reduce the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO₂ ) in the atmosphere, which is mainly accumulated in the air through the burning of fossil fuels. Therefore, the development of environmentally friendly strategies to capture carbon dioxide and convert it into value-added products offers a promising way forward for reducing carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere. In this context, POPs (porous organic polymers) have shown great potential as CO₂ selective adsorbents due to their high specific surface area, chemical stability, nanoscale porosity and structural diversity, as well as POPs based heterogeneous catalysts for CO₂ conversion. This review provides a concise account of preparation methods of various POPs, challenges and current development trends of POPs in photocatalytic CO₂ reduction, electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction and chemical CO₂ conversion.

Nickel-metalated porous organic polymer for Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction

A new Ni(ii)-α-diimine-based porous organic polymer, namely Ni(ii)-α-diimine-POP, was constructed in high yield via the Sonogashira coupling reaction between the metallo-building block of Ni(ii)-α-diimine and 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene. Besides the high thermal and chemical stability, the obtained Ni(ii)-α-diimine-POP can be a highly active reusable heterogeneous catalyst to promote the Suzuki–Miyaura coupling reaction. The obtained results indicate that the Ni(ii)-α-diimine-POP herein is a promising sustainable alternative to the Pd-based catalysts for catalysing the C–C formation in a heterogeneous way.

A Cobalt Tandem Catalyst Supported on a Compressible Microporous Polymer Monolith

A compressible microporous polymer monolith (MPM) was prepared by performing the Sonogashira-Hagihara reaction between 1,4-diiodobenzene and 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene in a gel state without stirring. MPM was functionalized via the click reaction with 1,3,5-tris(azidomethyl)-2,4,6-trimethylbenzene and 2,6-diethynylpyridine. MPM showed superhydrophobicity but became hydrophilic after the click reaction. The functionalized MPM (F-MPM) had polar triazole groups generated by the click reaction, which were used as coordination sites for Co(II) ions. Cobalt nanoparticles were loaded to F-MPM through in situ reduction of coordinated Co(II) ions to produce a monolithic Co heterogeneous catalyst (Co-MPM). The microscopic study showed that MPM, F-MPM, and Co-MPM consisted of fiber bundles, together with spherical particles on the micrometer scale. Co-MPM was used for tandem catalysis. Co-MPM promoted the reaction of dehydrogenation of ammonia borane and hydrogenation of nitro compounds in one pot to give amine products. The reactions with the compression and release process were much faster compared with the reactions performed under the stirring conditions, suggesting that the repeated compression and release facilitated interfacial contact between the reactants and active sites in Co-MPM.
