Abstract
Water pollution caused by pesticides is a significant threat to the environment and human health. Silver and gold nanoparticle (AgNPs, AuNPs)-based biosensors are affordable tools, ideal for environmental monitoring. Microfluidic paper-based devices (μPADs) are a promising approach for on-site testing, but few studies have explored the use of laser printing (LP) for μPAD-based biosensors. This study investigates the feasibility of using laser printing to fabricate paper-based biosensors for pesticide detection in water samples. The μPAD was designed and optimized by using different filter paper porosities, patterns, and channel thicknesses. The developed LP-μPAD was used to sense the pesticide atrazine in water through colorimetric assessments using a smartphone-assisted image analysis. The analytical assessment showed a limit of detection (LOD) of 3.5 and 10.9 μM for AgNPs and AuNPs, respectively. The sensor had high repeatability and reproducibility. The LP-μPAD also demonstrated good recovery and functionality in simulated contaminated water. Furthermore, the detection of pesticides was found to be specific under the influence of interferents, such as NaCl and pH levels. By combining laser printing and nanoparticles, the proposed sensor could contribute to developing effective and low-cost solutions for monitoring water quality that are widely accessible.

Abstract
Nanometal-containing biocomposites find wide use in many industries and fields of science. The physicochemical properties of these materials depend on the character of the polymer, the size and shape of the metallic nanoparticles, and the interactions between the biopolymer and the nanoparticles. The aim of the work was to synthesise and study the effect of plasma-treated water on the properties of the obtained metallic nanoparticles as well as the physicochemical and functional properties of nanocomposites based on potato starch. The metallic nanoparticles were synthesised within a starch paste made in distilled water and in distilled water exposed to low-temperature, low-pressure plasma. The materials produced were characterised in terms of their physicochemical properties. Studies have shown that gold and silver nanoparticles were successfully obtained in a matrix of potato starch in distilled water and plasma water. SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) images and UV-Vis spectra confirmed the presence of nanosilver and nanosilver in the obtained composites. On the basis of microscopic images, the size of nanoparticles was estimated in the range from 5 to 20 nm for nanoAg and from 15 to 40 nm for nanoAu. The analysis of FTIR-ATR spectra showed that the type of water used and the synthesis of gold and silver nanoparticles did not lead to changes in the chemical structure of potato starch. DLS analysis showed that the nanoAg obtained in the plasma water-based starch matrix were smaller than the Ag particles obtained using distilled water. Colour analysis showed that the nanocomposites without nanometals were colourless, while those containing nanoAg were yellow, while those with nanoAu were dark purple. This work shows the possibility of using plasma water in the synthesis of nanometals using potato starch, which is a very promising polysaccharide in terms of many potential applications.

Abstract
Due to plasmonic and catalytic properties, silver nanoplates are of significant interest; therefore, their simple preparation in gram quantities is required. Preferably, the method is seedless, consists of few reagents, enables preparation of silver nanoplates with desired optical properties in high concentration, is scalable, and allows their long-term storage. The developed method is based on silver nitrate, sodium borohydride, polyvinylpyrrolidone, and H2O2 as the main reagents, while antifoam A204 is implemented to achieve better product quality on a larger scale. The effect of each component was evaluated and optimized. Solution volumes from 3 to 450 mL and concentrations of silver nanoplates from 0.88 to 4.8 g/L were tested. Their size was tailored from 25 nm to 8 μm simply by H2O2 addition, covering the entire visible plasmon spectra and beyond. They can be dried and spontaneously dispersed after at least one month of storage in the dark without any change in plasmonic properties. Their potential use in modern art was demonstrated by drying silver colloids on different surfaces in the presence of reagents or purified, resulting in a variety of colors but, more importantly, patterns of varying complexity, from simple multi-coffee-rings structures to dendritic forms and complex multilevel Sierpiński triangle fractals.

Abstract
The removal of pesticide pollution is imperative, because of their high environmental load and persistence, and their potential for bioaccumulation in, and toxicity to the environment. Most pesticides are found to be toxic even at trace levels. AgNPs can be effectively used for the adsorption of pesticides, and the incorporation of the AgNPs onto a support polymeric membrane enhances their effectiveness and reduces the potential unwanted consequences of intentionally adding free nanoparticles to the environment. Here, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized using a reliable, eco-friendly, and one-step "green" method, by reacting Mentha Piperita (mint) extract with AgNO3 aqueous solution at 60 °C in a microwave. The resulting high surface area nanoparticles are both economic and effective environmental remediation agents, playing a promising role in the elimination of aquatic pesticide pollution. Embedding the nanoparticles into a cellulose membrane at a low concentration (0.1 g) of AgNPs was shown to result in effectively adsorption of representative pesticides (Cypermethrin, Paraquat, and Cartap) within 60 min, while increasing the concentration of nanoparticles incorporated into the membrane further enhanced the removal of the exemplar pesticides from water. The high adsorption capacity makes the cellulose-AgNPs membrane an excellent substrate for the remediation of pesticide-polluted water.

Abstract
Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are potent antimicrobial agents, but their utility is limited due to their relatively high cytotoxicity. In this work, we used trehalose as the ligand to reduce the cytotoxicity of AgNPs without affecting their antimicrobial activities. Trehalose is a disaccharide that is unique to mycobacteria. We showed that trehalose-functionalized AgNPs, AgNP-Tre, drastically increased the viability of A549 cells, especially at high concentrations, for example, from 4% for AgNPs to 67% for AgNP-Tre at 64 μg/mL. The trehalose ligand slowed down the release of silver, and the amount of silver released from AgNP-Tre was less than half of that from AgNPs in the culture medium. Intriguingly, while the maltose (Mal) or tri(ethylene glycol) (TEG) ligand reduced the antibacterial activity of AgNPs against M. smegmatis (minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of AgNP-Mal and AgNP-TEG: 4 μg/mL for 7 nm AgNPs), the activity of AgNP-Tre was similar to that of AgNPs (MIC of AgNP-Tre: 1 μg/mL for 7 nm AgNPs). Uptake experiments revealed that the intracellular concentration of AgNP-Tre was 87 and 114% higher than those of AuNP-Mal and AgNP-TEG, respectively. The increased uptake was attributed to the enhanced interactions of AgNP-Tre with mycobacteria promoted by the trehalose ligand.

Abstract
The application of nanotechnology in agriculture can remarkably improve the cultivation and growth of crop plants. Many studies showed that nanoparticles (NPs) made plants grow more vigorously. Light can make NPs aggregated, leading to the reduction of the NPs toxicity. In addition, treatment with NPs had a "hormesis effect" on plants. In this study, light-induced silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized by using the alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) extracts, and then the optimal synthetic condition was determined. Light-induced AgNPs were aggregated, spherical and pink, and they were coated with esters, phenols, acids, terpenes, amino acids and sugars, which were the compositions of alfalfa extracts. The concentration of free Ag+ was less than 2 % of the AgNPs concentration. Through nanopriming, Ag+ got into the seedlings and caused the impact of AgNPs on alfalfa. Compared with the control group, low concentration of light-induced AgNPs had a positive effect on the photosynthesis. It was also harmless to the leaf cells, and there was no elongation effect on shoots. Although high concentration of AgNPs was especially beneficial to root elongation, it had a slight toxic effect on seedlings due to the accumulation of silver. With the increase of AgNPs concentration, the content of silver in the seedlings increased and the silver enriched in plants was at the mg/kg level. Just as available research reported the toxicity of NPs can be reduced by using suitable synthesis and application methods, the present light induction, active material encapsulation and nanopriming minimized the toxicity of AgNPs to plants, enhancing the antioxidant enzyme system.

Development of Wash-Durable Antimicrobial Cotton Fabrics by In Situ Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles and Investigation of Their Antimicrobial Efficacy against Drug-Resistant Bacteria. Antibiotics (Basel) 2022; 11:antibiotics11070864. Abstract
An environment friendly and wash-durable silver nanoparticle treatment of cotton fabrics was carried out by in situ reduction of silver nitrate using Azadirachta indica leaf extract. The wash durability of the silver nanoparticles treatment on the cotton fabric was improved by pretreating the fabrics by mercerization and by adopting hydrothermal conditions of 120 °C temperature and 15 psi pressure for the in situ synthesis. The silver nanoparticle treated fabrics were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, colorimetric analysis and inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy. The coating of silver nanoparticles was seen to be dense and uniform in the scanning electron micrographs of the treated fabrics. An evaluation of the antibacterial efficacy of the silver nanoparticle treated fabric against antibiotic-resistant Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains was carried out. The antibacterial efficacy was found to be the highest against Bacillus licheniformis, showing 93.3% inhibition, whereas it was moderate against Klebsiella pneumoniae (20%) and Escherichia coli (10%). The transmittance data of a UV spectrophotometer (290–400nm) was used for measuring the UV protection factor of the silver nanoparticle treated fabrics. All the silver nanoparticle treated fabrics showed good antimicrobial and UV protection activity. The treatment was also seen to be durable against repeated laundering. This paper contributes the first report on a novel green synthesis approach integrating mercerization of cotton fabrics and in situ synthesis of nanoparticles under hydrothermal conditions using Azadirachta indica leaf extract for improved wash durability of the multifunctional fabric.

Abstract
Spherical silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and silver nanoprisms (Ag NPrsms) were synthesized and decorated on graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets. The Ag contents were 29% and 23% in the GO−Ag NPs and GO−Ag NPrsms, respectively. The Ag NPrsms exhibited stronger (111) crystal signal than Ag NPs. The GO−Ag NPrsms exhibited higher Ag (I) content (75.6%) than GO-Ag NPs (69.9%). Increasing the nanomaterial concentration from 25 to 100 µg mL−1 improved the bactericidal efficiency, and the antibacterial potency was in the order: GO−Ag NPrsms > GO−Ag NPs > Ag NPrsms > Ag NPs > GO. Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) was more vulnerable than Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) upon exposure to these nanomaterials. The GO−Ag NPrsms demonstrated a complete (100%) bactericidal effect against S. aureus at a concentration of 100 µg mL−1. The GO−Ag composites outperformed those of Ag or GO due to the synergistic effect of bacteriostatic Ag particles and GO affinity toward bacteria. The levels of reactive oxygen species produced in the bacteria−nanomaterial mixtures were highly correlated to the antibacterial efficacy values. The GO−Ag NPrsms are promising as bactericidal agents to suppress biofilm formation and inhibit bacterial infection.

Abstract
Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are novel materials with antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral activities over a wide range. This study aimed to prepare polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) electrospinning composites with uniformly distributed AgNPs. In this study, starch-capped ~2 nm primary AgNPs were first synthesized using Atmospheric pressure Pulsed Discharge Plasma (APDP) at AC 10 kV and 10 kHz. Then, 0.6 wt.% AgNPs were mixed into a 10 wt.% PVP ethanol-based polymer solution and coiled through an Ultrasonic-assisted Electrospinning device (US-ES) with a 50 W and 50 kHz ultrasonic generator. At 12 kV and a distance of 10 cm, this work successfully fabricated AgNPs-PVP electrospun fibers. The electrospun products were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), High-Resolution TEM (HR-TEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric (TG), and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) methods.

Abstract
With multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens on the rise, there is a strong research focus on alternative antibacterial treatments that could replace or complement classical antibiotics. Metallic nanoparticles, and in particular silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), have been shown to kill bacterial biofilms effectively, but their chemical synthesis often involves environmentally unfriendly by-products. Recent studies have shown that microbial and plant extracts can be used for the environmentally friendly synthesis of AgNPs. Herein we report a procedure for producing AgNPs using a putative Cedecea sp. strain isolated from soil. The isolated bacterial strain showed a remarkable potential for producing spherical, crystalline and stable AgNPs characterized by UV–visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The concentration of produced nanoparticles was 1.31 µg/µl with a negative surface charge of − 15.3 mV and nanoparticles size ranging from 10–40 nm. The AgNPs was tested against four pathogenic microorganisms S. epidermidis, S. aureus, E. coli and P. aeruginosa. The nanoparticles exhibited strong minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 12.5 and 6.25 µg/µl and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values of 12.5 and 12.5 µg/mL against E. coli and P. aeruginosa, respectively. One distinguishing feature of AgNPs produced by Cedecea sp. extracts is their extreme stability. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated that the produced AgNPs are stable for periods exceeding one year. This means that their strong antibacterial effects, demonstrated against E. coli and P. aeruginosa biofilms, can be expected to persist during extended periods.

Abstract
The beginning of latent fingerprint development on porous surface was first achieved by silver nitrate (AgNO3 ) method. But the significantly increasing cost has caused forensic experts to look for an alternative means. Silver nitrate (AgNO3 ) is the main component in the synthesis of metal nanoparticles, namely silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Owing to its unique property to adhere with fingerprint residue, AgNPs have attracted a great attention in the domain of nano-forensic fingerprinting. This study mainly focuses on the use of lower concentration of silver nitrate through new AgNP development method. The AgNPs were synthesized by wet chemical method with different molar concentrations (0.1, 0.01, and 0.001 M) of silver nitrate, characterized by ultraviolet visible spectrophotometer and high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM). The average diameter of AgNPs calculated by HR-TEM was 10.66 ± 1.22 nm at 0.1 M, 12.50 ± 2.64 nm at 0.01 M, and 14.44 ± 2.68 nm at 0.001 M, respectively. A comparative analysis was also carried out to see the quality and stability of fingerprints produced on paper or porous substrate by using AgNO3 and AgNPs, respectively. During the study, AgNPs were able to develop distinct ridge details and were found to be stable for more than a month. Comparatively, when AgNO3 was used as the developing agent for the latent fingerprints, only faint ridge patterns were observed which further showed degradation of fingerprint stability within about 20 days. Overall, the current AgNP method showed good visibility and stability by using lower concentration of silver nitrate which can be used in place of conventional AgNO3 method.

Abstract
Colloidal silica particles have received a widespread interest because of their potential applications in adsorption, ceramics, catalysis, drug delivery and more. Among many approaches towards fabrication of these colloidal particles, Stöber, Fink and Bohn (SFB) method, known as Stöber synthesis is an effective sol-gel strategy for production of uniform, monodispersed silica particles with highly tailorable size and surface properties. This review, after a brief introduction showing the importance of colloidal chemistry, is focused on the Stöber synthesis of silica spheres including discussion of the key factors affecting their particle size, porosity and surface properties. Next, further developments of this method are presented toward fabrication of polymer, carbon, and composite spheres.

Stable PEG-coated silver nanoparticles - A comprehensive toxicological profile. Food Chem Toxicol 2017; 111:546-556. Abstract
The present study was purported to assess the toxicological profile of bare and polyethylene glycol (PEG) coated spherical silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by means of in vitro (on human keratinocytes - HaCat cells) and in vivo non-invasive tests (after intraperitoneal - i.p. administration to mice). Bare and PEG-coated AgNPs were synthesized by applying Turkevich's method slightly modified. The physico-chemical characterization revealed the formation of stable, spherical AgNPs and PEG-AgNPs, with narrow size distributions and mean hydrodynamic sizes in the range of 19 nm and 50 nm, respectively. Toxicity data revealed a dose-dependent safe profile for low concentrations of test compounds (<10 μM) in terms of cell viability, whereas higher concentrations were associated with a high rate of cell mortality. In vivo acute/subacute toxicity data showed no denotive changes in mice health status after i.p. administration. Histological observations of internal organs and the biochemical parameters analyzed together with the other biological observations showed a low toxicity level with no major differences related to control, albeit at skin level a reduced number of mast cells was detected. All these observations provide strong support for the idea that coated silver nanoparticles could be applied as targeted nanocarriers for skin pathologies and diagnostic.
