Near-unity angular anisotropy of circularly polarized luminescence from microspheres of monodispersed chiral conjugated polymers

A microsphere, assembled from a chiral π-conjugated polymer with narrow polydispersity, features a well-organized twisted-bipolar structure and exhibits highly biased circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). The CPL emitted toward the equatorial direction is 61-fold greater than that emitted along the zenith direction, which is the highest anisotropy among existing microscopic CPL emitters.

Bioinspired Carbonized Polymer Microspheres for Full-Color Whispering Gallery Mode Emission for White Light Emission, Unclonable Anticounterfeiting, and Chemical Sensing Applications

Light-element-based fluorescent materials, colloidal graphene quantum dots, and carbon dots (CDs) have sparked an immense amount of scientific interest in the past decade. However, a significant challenge in practical applications has emerged concerning the development of solid-state fluorescence (SSF) materials. This study addresses this knowledge gap by exploring the unexplored photonic facets of C-based solid-state microphotonic emitters. The proposed synthesis approach focuses on carbonized polymer microspheres (CPMs) instead of conventional nanodots. These microspheres exhibit remarkable SSF spanning the entire visible spectrum from blue to red. The highly spherical shape of CPMs imparts built-in photonic properties in addition to its intrinsic CD-based attributes. Leveraging their excitation-dependent photoluminescence property, these microspheres exhibit amplified spontaneous emission, assisted by the whispering gallery mode resonance across the visible spectral region. Remarkably, unlike conventional semiconductor quantum dots or dye-doped microresonators, this single microstructure showcases adaptable resonant emission without structural/chemical modifications. This distinctive attribute enables a plethora of applications, including microcavity-assisted energy transfer for white light emission, highly sensitive chemical sensing, and secure encrypted anticounterfeiting measures. This interdisciplinary approach, integrating photonics and chemistry, provides a robust solution for light-element-based SSF with inherent photonic functionality and wide-ranging applications.

Device parameter to evaluate exciton energy transfer in organic whispering-gallery-mode microresonators and its dependence on the amplified spontaneous emission threshold

Exciton energy transfer in organic whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) resonators and its effect on the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) threshold have been investigated using the stilbene-based energy donor 4,4'-bis[(N-carbazole)styryl]biphenyl (BSB-Cz) and the coumarin-based energy acceptor 2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1,1,7,7,-tetramethyl-1H,5H,11H-10-(2-benzothiazolyl)quinolizino[9,9a,1gh]coumarin (C545T). Using the stacked-layer structure of BSB-Cz/C545T/BSB-Cz, we fabricated bowl-shaped microresonators on silica microspheres with a total thickness of 250 nm fixing the thickness of the C545T layer to 1 nm. The ASE threshold depended on the thicknesses of the top and bottom BSB-Cz layers, which affect the magnitude of the energy transfer. To assess the relationship between the ASE threshold and energy transfer, we developed a device parameter to evaluate the magnitude of the energy transfer by formulating the rate equations. We found that ASE easily occurs under the condition that the C545T molecules become unable to accept energy from the BSB-Cz excitons owing to the high exciton density of C545T, and that the ASE threshold decreases with decreasing device parameter. The device parameter is useful for optimizing microresonator structures in multi-component organic WGM resonators that utilize energy transfer.

Energy Transfer-Assisted Whispering Gallery Mode Lasing in Conjugated Polymer/Europium Hybrid Microsphere Resonators

Lanthanide metal complexes display luminescence with narrow bandwidth. Here, we present coupling of the luminescence from europium ion (Eu³⁺ ) with whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in conjugated polymer microsphere resonators. Self-assembly of fluorene-terpyridine alternating copolymer, coordinated by Eu³⁺ (F8tpy-Eu³⁺ ), forms well-defined microspheres with an average diameter of 3.2 μm. Upon focused laser excitation, a microsphere of F8tpy copolymer displays WGM photoluminescence (PL) at a wide spectral range from 420 to 680 nm. In contrast, F8tpy-Eu³⁺ hybrid microspheres exhibit sharp WGM PL at a narrow spectral range of 615-630 nm, which is characteristic of luminescence from Eu³⁺ . The PL behavior indicates that photoinduced energy transfer from F8tpy to Eu³⁺ occurs efficiently. Furthermore, the intensity of the PL peak increases nonlinearly upon strong pumping, indicating that a lasing action appears with the threshold of 1.85 mJ cm^-2 . These results will pave the way for developing microlasers and photonic devices from soft organic materials.

π-Conjugated nanostructured materials: preparation, properties and photonic applications

This article reviews recent advances in π-conjugated nanostructures based on conjugated oligomers and polymers, focusing on their preparation, energy transfer abilities, optoelectronic and laser applications, and photophysical properties including light harvesting. This is a rapidly evolving field as these materials are expected to have many important applications in areas such as light-emitting diodes, solid-state lighting, photovoltaics, solid-state lasers, biophotonics, sensing, imaging, photocatalysis, and photodynamic therapy. Other advantages of these materials are their versatility, and consequently, their adaptability to diverse fields.

Wide-gamut lasing from a single organic chromophore

The development of wideband lasing media has deep implications for imaging, sensing, and display technologies. We show that a single chromophore can be engineered to feature wide-gamut fluorescence and lasing throughout the entire visible spectrum and beyond. This exceptional color tuning demonstrates a chemically controlled paradigm for light emission applications with precise color management. Achieving such extensive color control requires a molecular blueprint that yields a high quantum efficiency and a high solubility in a wide variety of liquids and solids while featuring a heterocyclic structure with good steric access to the lone pair electrons. With these requirements in mind, we designed a lasing chromophore that encloses a lasing color space twice as large as the sRGB benchmark. This record degree of color tuning can in principle be adapted to the solid state by incorporating the chromophore into polymer films. By appropriately engineering the base molecular structure, the widest range of lasing wavelengths observed for a conventional gain medium can be achieved, in turn establishing a possible route toward high-efficiency light emitters and lasers with near-perfect chromaticity.
