Gifts from Nature: Bio-Inspired Materials for Rechargeable Secondary Batteries

Materials in nature have evolved to the most efficient forms and have adapted to various environmental conditions over tens of thousands of years. Because of their versatile functionalities and environmental friendliness, numerous attempts have been made to use bio-inspired materials for industrial applications, establishing the importance of biomimetics. Biomimetics have become pivotal to the search for technological breakthroughs in the area of rechargeable secondary batteries. Here, the characteristics of bio-inspired materials that are useful for secondary batteries as well as their benefits for application as the main components of batteries (e.g., electrodes, separators, and binders) are discussed. The use of bio-inspired materials for the synthesis of nanomaterials with complex structures, low-cost electrode materials prepared from biomass, and biomolecular organic electrodes for lithium-ion batteries are also introduced. In addition, nature-derived separators and binders are discussed, including their effects on enhancing battery performance and safety. Recent developments toward next-generation secondary batteries including sodium-ion batteries, zinc-ion batteries, and flexible batteries are also mentioned to understand the feasibility of using bio-inspired materials in these new battery systems. Finally, current research trends are covered and future directions are proposed to provide important insights into scientific and practical issues in the development of biomimetics technologies for secondary batteries.

Advances in Template Prepared Nano-Oxides and their Applications: Polluted Water Treatment, Energy, Sensing and Biomedical Drug Delivery

The nano-oxide materials with special structures prepared by template methods have a good dispersion, regular structures and high specific surface areas. Therefore, in some areas, improved properties are observed than conventional bulk oxide materials. For example, in the treatment of dye wastewater, the treatment efficiency of adsorbents and catalytic materials prepared by template method was about 30 % or even higher than that of conventional samples. This review mainly focuses on the progress of inorganic, organic and biological templates in the preparation of micro- and nano- oxide materials with special morphologies, and the roles of the prepared materials as adsorbents and photocatalysts in dye wastewater treatment. The characteristics and advantages of inorganic, organic and biological template are also summarized. In addition, the applications of template method prepared oxides in the field of sensors, drug carrier, energy materials and other fields are briefly discussed with detailed examples.

One-step co-precipitation synthesis of novel BiOCl/CeO2composites with enhanced photodegradation of rhodamine B

BiOCl/CeO₂composites were synthesized by a facile one-step co-precipitation method and showed good photodegradation activity of rhodamine B (RhB).

Extracellular and Intracellular Biomineralization Induced by Bacillus licheniformis DB1-9 at Different Mg/Ca Molar Ratios

Biomineralization has become a research hotspot and attracted widespread attention in the field of carbonate sedimentology. In this study, precipitation of carbonate minerals was induced by Bacillus licheniformis DB1-9 bacteria, (identity confirmed with its phylogenetic tree), to further explore the biomineralization mechanisms. During experiments, lasting up to 24 days with varying Mg/Ca molar ratios and regular monitoring of conditions, ammonia and carbonic anhydrase are released by the bacteria, resulting in a pH increase. Carbonic anhydrase could have promoted carbon dioxide hydration to produce bicarbonate and carbonate ions, and so promoted supersaturation to facilitate the precipitation of carbonate minerals. These include rhombohedral, dumbbell-shaped, and elongated calcite crystals; aragonite appears in the form of mineral aggregates. In addition, spheroidal and fusiform minerals are precipitated. FTIR results show there are organic functional groups, such as C–O–C and C=O, as well as the characteristic peaks of calcite and aragonite; these indicate that there is a close relationship between the bacteria and the minerals. Ultrathin slices of the bacteria analyzed by HRTEM, SAED, EDS, and STEM show that precipitate within the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) has a poor crystal structure, and intracellular granular areas have no crystal structure. Fluorescence intensity and STEM results show that calcium ions can be transported from the outside to the inside of the cells. This study provides further insights to our understanding of biomineralization mechanisms induced by microorganisms.

Solvothermal synthesis, characterization and photocatalytic property of zirconium dioxide doped titanium dioxide spinous hollow microspheres with sunflower pollen as bio-templates

Zirconium dioxide (ZrO₂) doped titanium dioxide (TiO₂) spinous hollow microspheres were successfully prepared through a facile solvothermal method using sunflower pollen as bio-templates. The products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherms and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. It was found that the products have spinous microsphere morphology with an approximate diameter of 12 μm. The ZrO₂ doped TiO₂ hollow microspheres exhibited a higher photocatalytic activity in the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) in aqueous solutions under UV-light irradiation compared with TiO₂ hollow microspheres and ZrO₂-doped TiO₂ particles. In particular, the removal of RhB followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, and 96.3% of RhB was degraded in 60 min under UV-light irradiation when ZrO₂ doped TiO₂ spinous hollow microspheres were used as the photocatalysts. Neutral and alkaline conditions were found to favor over acidic conditions for the photocatalytic degradation of RhB. Furthermore, scavenging experiments indicated that photogenerated holes (h⁺) and radicals (OH and O^-₂) were the main reactive species in the photocatalytic process using ZrO₂ doped TiO₂ hollow microspheres as the catalysts under UV light irradiation.

Two-step hydrothermally synthesized carbon nanodots/WO3 photocatalysts with enhanced photocatalytic performance

The markedly enhanced photocatalytic activity of C-dots/WO₃ is ascribed to the effective separation and transfer of photo-excited charges.
