Structurally flexible pyrrolidinium- and morpholinium-based ionic liquid electrolytes

Ion transport measures and details as well as physico-chemical and electrochemical properties are presented for a small set of structurally flexible pyrrolidinium (Pyrr) and morpholinium (Morph) cation-based ionic liquids (ILs), all with oligoether phosphate-based anions. All have high thermal stabilities, low glass transition temperatures, and wide electrochemical stability windows, but rather moderate ionic conductivities, where both the anions and the cations of the Pyrr-based ILs diffuse faster than those of the Morph-based ILs. Overall, the Pyrr-based ILs show significantly more promise as high-temperature supercapacitor electrolytes, rendering a specific capacitance of 164 F g^-1 at 1 mV s^-1, a power density of 609 W kg^-1 and a specific energy density of 27 W h kg^-1 at 90 °C in a symmetric graphite supercapacitor.

Herbicidal Ionic Liquids Containing the Acetylcholine Cation

This study presents a new group of herbicidal ionic liquids (HILs) based on a cation occurs commonly in nature-acetylcholine. The HILs were obtained with a high yield through ion exchange between acetylcholine chloride and potassium or sodium salts of selected acids with herbicidal activity. The results of the herbicidal activity measurement against common oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) exceeded those of the commercial products. Spray solutions of the synthesized HILs revealed high surface activity and wetting properties which further manifested as higher herbicidal activity. The reduction of surface tension and low contact angles together with the specific action of acetylcholine allowed for better penetration of synthesized HILs into plant tissues. In addition, OECD 301F tests confirmed high mineralization of the HILs. The simple transformation of commercial herbicides into acetylcholine HILs proved to be a very effective method of increasing their activity, and constitutes an interesting solution to the problem of weed infestation with the use of a substance commonly found in nature.

Experimental and computational studies of graphene oxide covalently functionalized by octylamine: electrochemical stability, hydrogen evolution, and corrosion inhibition of the AZ13 Mg alloy in 3.5% NaCl

Recently, carbon allotropes were shown to play a key role in energy harvesting and as hydrophobic coatings on metal alloys. We have designed octylamine-functionalized graphene oxide materials for energy harvesting and as an anti-corrosion coating for metal alloy protection in a 3.5% NaCl medium. The material has been characterized by different techniques to confirm the structure and composition of the modified graphene oxide sheet: FTIR spectroscopy, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, FESEM and TEM. The electrochemical stability and corrosion inhibition efficiency were studied by electrochemical methods. The electrochemical stability increased with an increase in the applied voltage up to 500 mV, and the corrosion inhibition efficiency was shown to be 73%. The coating stability studies showed a long stability time in the corrosion medium.

Application of polymer-based membranes containing ionic liquids in membrane separation processes: a critical review

The interest in ionic liquids, particularly in polymerizable ionic liquids, is motivated by their unique properties, such as good thermal stability, negligible vapor pressure, and wide electrochemical window. Due to these features ionic liquids were proposed to be used in the membrane separation technology. The utilization of conventional ionic liquids is, however, limited by their release from the membrane during the given separation process. Therefore, the incorporation of polymerizable ionic liquids may overcome this drawback for the industrial application. This work is a comprehensive overview of the advances of ionic liquid membranes for the separation of various compounds, i.e. gases, organic compounds, and metal ions.

Synthesis and antioxidant properties of dicationic ionic liquids

A simple and efficient method for the synthesis of novel water soluble antioxidants in the form of dicationic ionic liquids (DILs) was described in the framework of our study.
