Influence of Polymer Molecular Weight on Chain Conformation at the Polystyrene/Silver Interface

The dependence between the conformation of polystyrene (PS) and its molecular weight (Mw) in the vicinity of a metal interface was investigated by sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy. Tilt angles θ ≥ 50^° (the angle between the C₂ axis of the pendant phenyl ring and the surface normal) were observed for all samples because of the interaction between the aromatic rings and the metal surface. Furthermore, it was found that θ decreases with increasing Mw for PS samples ranging from 20 × 10³ g/mol to 400 × 10³ g/mol. The intensity of the backbone SFG signal was higher for high Mw PS, compared to low Mw PS, indicating a greater number of backbone interactions with the silver substrate surface for the high Mw sample. These structural differences are driven by different entropic and enthalpic contributions to the free energy of adsorption for different polymer molecular weights. Differences in the polymer free volume and in the relative amount of chain ends with higher mobility may also influence the chain conformation. These results suggest that important interfacial properties of polymeric thin films, such as adhesion and wettability, could be tailored by modifying the polymer Mw to achieve the desired interfacial conformation.

Effect of Bidispersity on Dynamics of Confined Polymer Films

Using Monte Carlo simulations, we studied the effect of bidispersity on the dynamics of polymer films capped between two neutral walls, where we chose three representative compositions for bidispersed polymer films. Our results demonstrate that the characteristic entanglement length is an important parameter to clarify the effect of the bidispersity on the dynamics of polymer films. For the short chains, shorter than the characteristic entanglement length, the average number of near-neighboring particles increases with the decrease of the film thickness and limits the diffusivity of the short chains, which is independent of the film compositions. However, the dynamics of the long chains, of which is above the characteristic entanglement length, is determined by the film’s composition. In our previous paper, we inferred from the structures and entanglements of the bidisperse system with short and long chains that the constraint release contributes significantly to the relaxation mechanism of long chains. By calculating the self-diffusion coefficient of long chains, we confirmed this prediction that, with a lower weight fraction of long chains, the self-diffusion coefficient of long chains decreases slowly with the decrease of the film thickness, which is similar to that of short chains. With a higher weight fraction of long chains, the competition between the disentanglement and the increased in the local degree of confinement which resulted in the self-diffusion coefficient of long chains varying non-monotonically with the film thickness. Furthermore, for the bidisperse system with long and long chains, the diffusivity of long chains was not affected by the constraint release, which varied nonmonotonically with the decrease of the film thickness due to the competition between the disentanglement and the enhanced confinement. Herein, compared with the previous work, we completely clarified the relationship between the structures and dynamics for three representative compositions of bidisperse polymer films, which contains all possible cases for bidisperse systems. Our work not only establishes a unified understanding of the dependency of dynamics on the bidispersity of polymer films, but also helps to understand the case of polydispersity, which can provide computational supports for various applications for polymer films.

Detection of Surface Enrichment Driven by Molecular Weight Disparity in Virtually Monodisperse Polymers

The preference for a shorter chain component at a polymer blend surface impacts surface properties key to application-specific performance. While such segregation is known for blends containing low molecular weight additives or systems with large polydispersity, it has not been reported for anionically polymerized polymers that are viewed, in practice, as monodisperse. Observations with surface layer matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SL-MALDI-ToF-MS), which distinguishes surface species without labeling and provides the entire molecular weight distribution, demonstrate that entropically driven surface enrichment of shorter chains occurs even in low polydispersity materials. For 6 kDa polystyrene the number-average molecular weight (M_n) at the surface is ca. 300 Da (5%) lower than that in the bulk, and for 7 kDa poly(methyl methacryalate) the shift is ca. 500 Da. These observations are in qualitative agreement with results from a mean-field theory that considers a homopolymer melt with a molecular-weight distribution matched to the experiments.

Entropic segregation of short polymers to the surface of a polydisperse melt

Chain ends are known to have an entropic preference for the surface of a polymer melt, which in turn is expected to cause the short chains of a polydisperse melt to segregate to the surface. Here, we examine this entropic segregation for a bidisperse melt of short and long polymers, using self-consistent field theory (SCFT). The individual polymers are modeled by discrete monomers connected by freely-jointed bonds of statistical length a , and the field is adjusted so as to produce a specified surface profile of width [Formula: see text]. Semi-analytical expressions for the excess concentration of short polymers, [Formula: see text], the integrated excess, [Formula: see text] , and the entropic effect on the surface tension, [Formula: see text], are derived and tested against the numerical SCFT. The expressions exhibit universal dependences on the molecular-weight distribution with model-dependent coefficients. In general, the coefficients have to be evaluated numerically, but they can be approximated analytically once [Formula: see text]. We illustrate how this can be used to derive a simple expression for the interfacial tension between immiscible A- and B-type polydisperse homopolymers.

The influence of polymer architectures on the dewetting behavior of thin polymer films: from linear chains to ring chains

The dewetting behavior of ring polystyrene (RPS) film and linear polystyrene (LPS) film on silanized Si substrates with different grafting densities and PDMS substrate was investigated. Results showed that polymer architectures greatly influenced the dewetting behavior of the thin polymer film. On the silanized Si substrate with 69% grafting density, RPS chains exhibited stronger adsorption compared with LPS chains, and as a result the wetting layer formed more easily. For LPS films, with a decreased annealing temperature, the stability of the polymer film changed from non-slip dewetting via apparent slip dewetting to apparently stable. However, for RPS films, the polymer film stability switched from apparent slip dewetting to apparently stable. On the silanized Si substrate with 94% grafting density, the chain adsorption became weaker and the dewetting processes were faster than that on the substrate with 69% grafting density at the same experimental temperature for both the LPS and RPS films. Moreover, on the PDMS substrate, LPS films always showed non-slip dewetting, while the dewetting kinetics of RPS films switched from non-slip dewetting to slip dewetting behaviour. Forming the wetting layer strongly influenced the stability and dewetting behavior of the thin polymer films.
