Silk fibroin fibers decorated with urchin-like Au/Ag nanoalloys: a flexible hygroscopic SERS sensor for monitoring of folic acid in human sweat

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy has become a powerful and sensitive analytical tool for the detection and assessment of chemical/biological molecules in special scenarios. Herein we propose a flexible hygroscopic SERS biocompatible sensor based on the silk fibroin fibers (SFF) decorated with urchin-like Au/Ag nanoalloys (NAs). The hybrid SFF-Au/Ag NAs with a stronger absorbance capacity (500∼1100 nm) and excellent hygroscopicity provide a remarkable higher near-infrared (NIR)-SERS activity than that of bare urchin-like Au/Ag NAs. The interesting NIR-SERS sensor enables the limit of detection (LOD) of folic acid (FA) to be achieved at nanomolar (nM, 10^-9 M) level, facilitating the ultrasensitive monitoring of FA in human sweat and offering reliable real-time personal health management in the near future.

Silver-enhanced fluorescence of bimetallic Au/Ag nanoclusters as ultrasensitive sensing probe for the detection of folic acid

Folic acid (FA) is the natural form of water-soluble vitamins widely found in most plants and animal products and its deficiency leads to several human body abnormalities. The advancements of metal nanoclusters are highly increasing due to their molecule-like optical properties and attractive applications. Because of increasingly demand of noble metal nanoclusters as sensing templates, different synthesis methods have been developed for facile synthesis of noble metal nanoclusters. Herein, red-emitting fluorescent bovine serum albumin (BSA)-capped Au-Ag bimetallic NCs are facilely synthesized through green one-pot synthetic approach. The effect of silver on the fluorescence properties of Au NCs was investigated and it was found that introduction of silver can enhance the fluorescence intensity. The fluorescence intensity of the as-prepared Au-Ag nanoclusters gets quenched in the presence of folic acid in an aqueous medium and it was used as ultrasensitive sensing probe for FA detection. The developed Au-Ag NCs-based sensing probe shows linear response in the wide range of 0-100 μM and the detection limit is as low as 0.47 nM. Its applicability has also been confirmed successfully in real human serum, urine and FA tablet samples. Due to the high stability, sensitivity and selectivity, the developed bimetallic cluster sensing system is highly promising to be applied in the pharmaceutical and clinical laboratories.

Recent Advances in Metal Organic Frameworks Based Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering Substrates: Synthesis and Applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are supramolecular nanomaterials, in which metal ions or clusters are connected by organic ligands to form crystalline lattices with highly ordered periodic porous network structure. MOFs have been widely applied in various fields, such as catalyst, sample preparation, and sensing. In recent years, MOFs based surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates have attracted much attention since MOFs can largely improve the performance of metallic SERS substrates toward target enrichment and signal enhancement. MOFs have been exploited in SERS analysis to tackle some challenges that bare metal substrates cannot achieve. Combination of MOFs and SERS improved the sensitivity of traditional SERS analysis and extended the application scope of SERS. With the increasing exploration of MOFs based SERS substrates, there is a great demand to review the advances in these researches. Herein, this review concentrated on summarizing the preparation and applications of MOFs based SERS substrates. Representative researches were discussed to better understand the property of MOFs based SERS substrates. The advantages of MOFs based SERS substrates were highlighted, as well as their limitations. In addition, the challenges, opportunities, and future trends in MOFs based SERS analysis were tentatively discussed.

Fluorescent paper-based sensor based on carbon dots for detection of folic acid

Paper-based devices have been very much in the foreground of analytical science recently. This work innovatively proposed a fluorescent paper-based sensor (FPS) constructed on a hybrid polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/paper platform where cellulose papers functionalized with carbon dots (CDs) as fluorophores by Schiff base chemistry were loaded on the grooves array of a designed PDMS plate. As a proof of concept, the performance of FPS was investigated with folic acid (FA) as the target analyte. Under optimal conditions, FPS enabled a rapid fluorescence quenching response to FA via inner filter effect in a wide range of 1-300 μmol L^-1 with the limit of detection of 0.28 μmol L^-1. The feasibility of FPS was further verified by the detection of FA in orange juice and urine samples with satisfactory results. The covalent modification of CDs on paper endowed the FPS with good assay reproducibility and stability. Interestingly, FPS achieved a more sensitive assay of FA than the conventional strategy, by which the same CDs were directly used to detect FA in a solution-based system. The FPS illuminated a novel strategy for construction of reliable and sensitive assays based on paper-based devices. From IR to x-rays: gaining molecular level insights on metal-organic frameworks through spectroscopy

This topical review focuses on the application of several types of spectroscopy methods to a class of solid state materials called metal organic frameworks (MOFs). MOFs are self-assembled, porous crystalline materials composed of metal cluster nodes linked through coordination bonds with organic or organometallic molecular constituents. Their unique host-guest properties make them attractive for many adsorption-based applications such as gas storage and separation, catalysis, sensing and others. While much research focuses on the development and application of these materials, fundamental studies of MOF properties and molecular level host-guest interactions behind their functionality have become a significant research direction on its own. Spectroscopy methods are now ubiquitous tools in this pursuit. This review focuses on the application of three classes of spectroscopy methods to MOF materials: vibrational, optical electronic and x-ray spectroscopies. Following brief introductions to each method that include pertinent theory and experimental considerations, we present a broad overview of the types of MOF systems that have been studied, with specific examples and important new molecular level insights highlighted along the way. The current status of spectroscopic studies of MOFs is presented at the end along with some perspectives on the future directions in this area of research.

Controlling the fluorescence and room-temperature phosphorescence behaviour of carbon nanodots with inorganic crystalline nanocomposites

There is a significant drive to identify alternative materials that exhibit room temperature phosphorescence for technologies including bio-imaging, photodynamic therapy and organic light-emitting diodes. Ideally, these materials should be non-toxic and cheap, and it will be possible to control their photoluminescent properties. This was achieved here by embedding carbon nanodots within crystalline particles of alkaline earth carbonates, sulphates and oxalates. The resultant nanocomposites are luminescent and exhibit a bright, sub-second lifetime afterglow. Importantly, the excited state lifetimes, and steady-state and afterglow colours can all be systematically controlled by varying the cations and anions in the host inorganic phase, due to the influence of the cation size and material density on emissive and non-emissive electronic transitions. This simple strategy provides a flexible route for generating materials with specific, phosphorescent properties and is an exciting alternative to approaches relying on the synthesis of custom-made luminescent organic molecules.

Facing Challenges in Real-Life Application of Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering: Design and Nanofabrication of Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Substrates for Rapid Field Test of Food Contaminants

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is capable of detecting a single molecule with high specificity and has become a promising technique for rapid chemical analysis of agricultural products and foods. With a deeper understanding of the SERS effect and advances in nanofabrication technology, SERS is now on the edge of going out of the laboratory and becoming a sophisticated analytical tool to fulfill various real-world tasks. This review focuses on the challenges that SERS has met in this progress, such as how to obtain a reliable SERS signal, improve the sensitivity and specificity in a complex sample matrix, develop simple and user-friendly practical sensing approach, reduce the running cost, etc. This review highlights the new thoughts on design and nanofabrication of SERS-active substrates for solving these challenges and introduces the recent advances of SERS applications in this area. We hope that our discussion will encourage more researches to address these challenges and eventually help to bring SERS technology out of the laboratory.

11-Mercaptoundecanoic acid capped gold nanoclusters as a fluorescent probe for specific detection of folic acid via a ratiometric fluorescence strategy

A novel ratiometric fluorescence strategy is developed for specific detection of folic acid (FA) by using 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid protected gold nanoclusters (AuNCs@MUA). In this design, the fluorescence color of the probe can be switched among red, pink, violet and blue by varying the concentration of FA. AuNCs@MUA possesses strong fluorescence peaking at 612 nm (R-signal) and FA exhibits blue emissive auto-fluorescence at 446 nm (B-signal), showing a large emission shift of ∼170 nm. When AuNCs@MUA approaches FA through electrostatic binding, the R-signal decreases while the B-signal increases with titration of FA. Based on the above phenomenon, a radiometric analysis platform is constructed for FA target detection, with a wide linear response range from 0 to 20 μM, and an excellent detection limit of 26 nM. This new ratiometric strategy exhibits low background, and wide signal changes in a low concentration range, which presents obvious advantages over most previous FA detections based on single-responsive fluorescence methods. Furthermore, the proposed method is successfully applied to determine FA in human serum samples.
