A high-performance voltammetric methodology for the ultra-sensitive detection of riboflavin in food matrices based on graphene oxide-covered hollow MnO2 spheres

A high-performance voltammetric methodology was developed to achieve ultra-sensitive detection of riboflavin, employing an electrode modified by graphene oxide-covered hollow MnO₂ spheres nanocomposite with high catalytic activity, large surface area, and hierarchical layered structure. Under the optimal conditions, the current responses of the oxidation peak located at -0.39 V showed a good linear relationship versus the concentration of riboflavin in the range of 1.0 nM-4.0 μM in acetate buffer (pH 5.4). The limit of detection was determined as 0.26 nM. Moreover, the proposed electrode exhibited high reproducibility (relative standard deviation of 1.7%, n = 10) and excellent stability (97.6% sensitivity within two months), which has been successfully applied to the quantification of riboflavin in complicated food matrices, with results in good accordance with those obtained by chromatography as a reference method, indicating it is an effective sensing platform for ultra-sensitive determination of riboflavin in practical applications.

Recent advances in molybdenum disulfide-based electrode materials for electroanalytical applications

The primary objective of this review article is to summarize the development and structural diversity of 2D/3D molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) based modified electrodes for electrochemical sensors and biosensor applications. Hydrothermal, mechanical, and ultrasonic techniques and solution-based exfoliation have been used to synthesize graphene-like 2D MoS₂ layers. The unique physicochemical properties of MoS₂ and its nanocomposites, including high mechanical strength, high carrier transport, large surface area, excellent electrical conductivity, and rapid electron transport rate, render them useful as efficient transducers in various electrochemical applications. The present review summarizes 2D/3D MoS₂-based nanomaterials as an electrochemical platform for the detection and analysis of various biomolecules (e.g., neurotransmitters, NADH, glucose, antibiotics, DNA, proteins, and bacteria) and hazardous chemicals (e.g., heavy metal ions, organic compounds, and pesticides). The substantial improvements that have been achieved in the performance of enzyme-based amperometry, chemiluminescence, and nucleic acid sensors incorporating MoS₂-based chemically modified electrodes are also addressed. We also summarize key sensor parameters such as limits of detection (LODs), sensitivity, selectivity, response time, and durability, as well as real applications of the sensing systems in the environmental, pharmaceutical, chemical, industrial, and food analysis fields. Finally, the remaining challenges in designing MoS₂ nanostructures suitable for electroanalytical applications are outlined. Sensor systems for bacterial reactors: A new flavin-phenol composite film for the in situ voltammetric measurement of pH

Monitoring pH within microbial reactors has become an important requirement across a host of applications ranging from the production of functional foods (probiotics) to biofuel cell systems. An inexpensive and scalable composite sensor capable of monitoring the pH within the demanding environments posed by microbial reactors has been developed. A custom designed flavin derivative bearing an electropolymerisable phenol monomer was used to create a redox film sensitive to pH but free from the interferences that can impede conventional pH systems. The film was integrated within a composite carbon-fibre-polymer laminate and was shown to exhibit Nernstian behaviour (55 mV/pH) with minimal drift and robust enough to operate within batch reactors.

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide/conducting polymer composites: synthesis and applications

The exploration of hybridizing transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanosheets with other materials as a unique approach for engineering their properties has attracted considerable attention from the scientific community for both basic studies and numerous potential applications. Among the various kinds of functional materials in hand, the utilization of intrinsically conducting polymers (CPs) in the construction of advanced hybrid composites with TMD nanosheets is considered as a fascinating approach. In this review, we aim at providing a survey of the literature on recent progress in composites based on 2D TMD and CPs. In this regard, we first discuss the different synthetic strategies used for the fabrication of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide/conducting polymer (2D TMD/CP) composites in detail. Subsequently, we demonstrate the state-of-the-art advances in the utilization of these novel composites in promising applications such as energy storage, sensing devices, hydrogen production and so on. Finally, we also highlight some perspectives on the major challenges and future directions in this field of research.
