Gas sensors based on the oxide skin of liquid indium

Various non-stratified two-dimensional (2D) materials can be obtained from liquid metal surfaces that are not naturally accessible. Homogenous nucleation on atomically flat interfaces of liquid metals with air produces unprecedented high-quality oxide layers that can be transferred onto desired substrates. The atomically flat and large areas provide large surface-to-volume ratios ideal for sensing applications. Versatile crucial applications of the liquid metal-derived 2D oxides have been realized; however, their gas-sensing properties remain largely underexplored. The cubic In₂O₃ structure, which is nonlayered, can be formed as an ultrathin layer on the surface of liquid indium during the self-limiting Cabrera-Mott oxidation process in the air. The morphology, crystal structure, and band structure of the harvested 2D In₂O₃ nanosheets from liquid indium are characterized. Sensing capability toward several gases, both inorganic and organic, entailing NO₂, O₂, NH₃, H₂, H₂S, CO, and Methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) are explored. A high ohmic resistance change of 1974% at 10 ppm, fast response, and recovery times are observed for NO₂ at an optimum temperature of 200 °C. The sensing fundamentals are investigated for NO₂, and its performances and cross-selectivity to different gases are analyzed. The NO₂ sensing response from room temperature to 300 °C has been measured and discussed, and stability after 24 hours of continuous operation is presented. The results demonstrate liquid metal-derived 2D oxides as promising materials for gas sensing applications.

Monitoring Fish Freshness in Real Time under Realistic Conditions through a Single Metal Oxide Gas Sensor

The realization of an unobtrusive and effective technology able to track fish freshness in real time and inform on its edibility is highly demanded, but still unachieved. In the present paper, we address this issue through a single metal oxide gas sensor working in temperature modulation mode. The system can work without an external reference air source, which is an appealing feature for its possible integration in domestic refrigerators. Tests were carried out using fresh sea bream fillets as case study and working both inside the refrigerator and at room temperature. Parallel gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and microbiological characterization indicated the marked dependence of both the microbiological condition and the gas-phase composition from the individual sample and from the storage temperature. Despite such a large variability, which may be expected in real applications, the proposed system provided similar responses whenever the total bacterial population approached and exceeded the edibility threshold of 10⁷ CFU/g.

Improved TEA Sensitivity and Selectivity of In2O3 Porous Nanospheres by Modification with Ag Nanoparticles

A highly sensitive and selective detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by using gas sensors based on metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) has attracted increasing interest, but still remains a challenge in gas sensitivity and selectivity. In order to improve the sensitivity and selectivity of In2O3 to triethylamine (TEA), herein, a silver (Ag)-modification strategy is proposed. Ag nanoparticles with a size around 25–30 nm were modified on pre-synthesized In2O3 PNSs via a simple room-temperature chemical reduction method by using NaBH4 as a reductant. The results of gas sensing tests indicate that after functionalization with Ag, the gas sensing performance of In2O3 PNSs for VOCs, especially for TEA, was remarkably improved. At a lower optimal working temperature (OWT) of 300 °C (bare In2O3 sensor: 320 °C), the best Ag/In2O3-2 sensor (Ag/In2O3 PNSs with an optimized Ag content of 2.90 wt%) shows a sensitivity of 116.86/ppm to 1–50 ppm TEA, about 170 times higher than that of bare In2O3 sensor (0.69/ppm). Significantly, the Ag/In2O3-2 sensor can provide a response (Ra/Rg) as high as 5697 to 50 ppm TEA, which is superior to most previous TEA sensors. Besides lower OWT and higher sensitivity, the Ag/In2O3-2 sensor also shows a remarkably improved selectivity to TEA, whose selectivity coefficient (STEA/Sethanol) is as high as 5.30, about 3.3 times higher than that of bare In2O3 (1.59). The sensitization mechanism of Ag on In2O3 is discussed in detail.

Metal Oxide Chemiresistors: A Structural and Functional Comparison between Nanowires and Nanoparticles

Metal oxide nanowires have become popular materials in gas sensing, and more generally in the field of electronic and optoelectronic devices. This is thanks to their unique structural and morphological features, namely their single-crystalline structure, their nano-sized diameter and their highly anisotropic shape, i.e., a large length-to-diameter aspect ratio. About twenty years have passed since the first publication proposing their suitability for gas sensors, and a rapidly increasing number of papers addressing the understanding and the exploitation of these materials in chemosensing have been published. Considering the remarkable progress achieved so far, the present paper aims at reviewing these results, emphasizing the comparison with state-of-the-art nanoparticle-based materials. The goal is to highlight, wherever possible, how results may be related to the particular features of one or the other morphology, what is effectively unique to nanowires and what can be obtained by both. Transduction, receptor and utility-factor functions, doping, and the addition of inorganic and organic coatings will be discussed on the basis of the structural and morphological features that have stimulated this field of research since its early stage.

Semiconductor Gas Sensor for Triethylamine Detection

With the demanding detection of unique toxic gas, semiconductor gas sensors have attracted tremendous attention due to their intriguing features, such as, high sensitivity, online detection, portability, ease of use, and low cost. Triethylamine, a typical gas of volatile organic compounds, is an important raw material for industrial development, but it is also a hazard to human health. This review presents a concise compilation of the advances in triethylamine detection based on chemiresistive sensors. Specifically, the testing system and sensing parameters are described in detail. Besides, the sensing mechanism with characterizing tactics is analyzed. The research status based on various chemiresistive sensors is also surveyed. Finally, the conclusion and challenges, as well as some perspectives toward this area, are presented.
