MgO Heterostructures: From Synthesis to Applications

The energy storage capacity of batteries and supercapacitors has seen rising demand and problems as large-scale energy storage systems and electric gadgets have become more widely adopted. With the development of nano-scale materials, the electrodes of these devices have changed dramatically. Heterostructure materials have gained increased interest as next-generation materials due to their unique interfaces, resilient structures and synergistic effects, providing the capacity to improve energy/power outputs and battery longevity. This review focuses on the role of MgO in heterostructured magnetic and energy storage devices and their applications and synthetic strategies. The role of metal oxides in manufacturing heterostructures has received much attention, especially MgO. Heterostructures have stronger interactions between tightly packed interfaces and perform better than single structures. Due to their typical physical and chemical properties, MgO heterostructures have made a breakthrough in energy storage. In perpendicularly magnetized heterostructures, the MgO's thickness significantly affects the magnetic properties, which is good news for the next generation of high-speed magnetic storage devices.

Application of Nanostructured TiO2 in UV Photodetectors: A Review

As a wide-bandgap semiconductor material, titanium dioxide (TiO₂ ), which possesses three crystal polymorphs (i.e., rutile, anatase, and brookite), has gained tremendous attention as a cutting-edge material for application in the environment and energy fields. Based on the strong attractiveness from its advantages such as high stability, excellent photoelectric properties, and low-cost fabrication, the construction of high-performance photodetectors (PDs) based on TiO₂ nanostructures is being extensively developed. An elaborate microtopography and device configuration is the most widely used strategy to achieve efficient TiO₂ -based PDs with high photoelectric performances; however, a deep understanding of all the key parameters that influence the behavior of photon-generated carriers, is also highly required to achieve improved photoelectric performances, as well as their ultimate functional applications. Herein, an in-depth illustration of the electrical and optical properties of TiO₂ nanostructures in addition to the advances in the technological issues such as preparation, microdefects, p-type doping, bandgap engineering, heterojunctions, and functional applications are presented. Finally, a future outlook for TiO₂ -based PDs, particularly that of further functional applications is provided. This work will systematically illustrate the fundamentals of TiO₂ and shed light on the preparation of more efficient TiO₂ nanostructures and heterojunctions for future photoelectric applications.

Ultraviolet Detectors Based on Wide Bandgap Semiconductor Nanowire: A Review

Ultraviolet (UV) detectors have attracted considerable attention in the past decade due to their extensive applications in the civil and military fields. Wide bandgap semiconductor-based UV detectors can detect UV light effectively, and nanowire structures can greatly improve the sensitivity of sensors with many quantum effects. This review summarizes recent developments in the classification and principles of UV detectors, i.e., photoconductive type, Schottky barrier type, metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) type, p-n junction type and p-i-n junction type. The current state of the art in wide bandgap semiconductor materials suitable for producing nanowires for use in UV detectors, i.e., metallic oxide, III-nitride and SiC, during the last five years is also summarized. Finally, novel types of UV detectors such as hybrid nanostructure detectors, self-powered detectors and flexible detectors are introduced.

Organics filled one-dimensional TiO2 nanowires array ultraviolet detector with enhanced photo-conductivity and dark-resistivity

A heterojunction photo-conductive ultraviolet (UV) detector was developed based on TiO₂ nanowires array (NWA) surrounded by N,N'-bis-(1-naphthalenyl)-N,N'-bis-phenyl-(1,1'-biphenyl)-4,4'-diamine (NPB). The novel and effective two-step method of static infusion and dynamic solution-cleaning was employed to fill NPB into TiO₂ NWA gaps and simultaneously remove the unwelcomed top NPB layer. The device fabricated via the two-step method exhibited optimal performance compared to TiO₂/NPB device with top NPB layer and TiO₂ NWA device. In dark conditions, the TiO₂/NPB heterojunction device without top NPB was found to possess the capacity of depleting majority carriers, thereby providing improved dark-resistivity to limit the dark current (I_d). Under UV illumination, the depleting effect could be eliminated by the dissociation and accumulation of photo-generated carriers between pn heterojunction, leading to increased carrier density and photo-conductivity. It cleared up the high barrier due to the removal of top NPB layer, which was beneficial for hot electron transport than the device with top NPB layer under illumination, thereby achieving an enhanced light current (I_l) to I_d ratio of 1.67 × 10⁴. A simple technology is provided to prepare organic-inorganic hybrid one-dimensional array heterostructure, which plays a remarkable role in the working of the UV detector, enhancing photo-conductivity and dark-resistivity of the device.
