Synthesis of Two Novel Copper (II) Complexes as Potential Inhibitors of HIV-1 Protease Enzyme: Experimental and Theoretical Investigations. CRYSTALS 2022. Abstract
In this study, we report the synthesis of two new copper complexes: [Cu(C11H7O2)(SCN)(C10H8N2)], denoted as (C-1), and [Cu(C11H7O2) (C12H8N2) Cl]·H2O, denoted as (C-2). They are based on 2,2′-bipyridine or 1,10-phenanthroline and 2-hydroxy-1-naphtaldehyde ligands. The obtained complexes were characterized by FT-IR, UV-visible spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Molecular docking was employed to predict the binding mode involved in the interaction between the two synthetic copper (II) complexes and HIV-1 protease enzyme. The X-ray structural analysis revealed that the crystal structures of both complexes are mainly stabilized by several intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The fingerprint plots associated with the Hirshfeld surfaces of both complexes clearly show that H···H interactions provide the largest contributions. According to the docking results, the synthesized complexes exhibit promising features which enable them to be bound to the HIV-protease enzyme.

Abstract
Two penta-coordinated [Co(MorphBPT)Cl2]; 1 and [Co(PipBPT)Cl2]; 2 complexes with the bis-pyrazolyl-s-triazine pincer ligands MorphBPT and PipBPT were synthesized and characterized. Both MorphBPT and PipBPT act as NNN-tridentate pincer chelates coordinating the Co(II) center with one short Co-N(s-triazine) and two longer Co-N(pyrazole) bonds. The coordination number of Co(II) is five in both complexes, and the geometry around Co(II) ion is a distorted square pyramidal in 1, while 2 shows more distortion. In both complexes, the packing is dominated by Cl…H, C-H…π, and Cl…C (anion-π stacking) interactions in addition to O…H interactions, which are found only in 1. The UV-Vis spectral band at 564 nm was assigned to metal–ligand charge transfer transitions based on TD-DFT calculations. Complexes 1 and 2 showed higher antimicrobial activity compared to the respective free ligand MorphBPT and PipBPT, which were not active. MIC values indicated that 2 had better activity against S. aureus, B. subtilis, and P. vulgaris than 1. DPPH free radical scavenging assay revealed that all the studied compounds showed weak to moderate antioxidant activity where the nature of the substituent at the s-triazine core has a significant impact on the antioxidant activity.

Abstract
Transition metal Co immobilized on hydroxyapatite with a loading of 0.05 wt% (denoted 0.05 wt% Co/HAP) could catalyze partial oxidation of cyclic alkenes, aromatic alkenes and aliphatic alkenes to yield epoxide products with excellent selectivity at 30 °C with O2 and iso-butyraldehyde as co-oxidant. The TOF value was as high as 6261 h−1 for epoxidation of cyclohexene. In addition, the prepared 0.05 wt% Co/HAP catalyst can be re-used at least 6 times without significant loss of catalytic activity and selectivity. Transition metal Co immobilized on hydroxyapatite even with low loading of 0.05 wt% is a low-cost and highly effective heterogeneous catalyst for alkenes epoxidation at 30 °C with O2 and iso-butyraldehyde as co-oxidant.![]()
